ive been working now for a while as a paramedic in nyc for a few years and there has been many times where i dont carry a o2 key or shears for the fact that i have no place to put them... but, now leatherman has made my life easier by putting it all in one package (plus extras i dont think i need because i work in the city). The design of it makes it small and compact and with the included belt clip makes it easy for me at work (everything at work is strapped to your belt) i can sit in my ambulance and it wont get in the way and its there if i ever need any of the multi uses it has. The only thing CON it has is a bottle opener for after work hours. i can forsee myself getting another one just in case and my coworkers following suit
I am an EMT and almost a paramedic. I purchased these after a cheap, cheesy pair of shears I had broke. I have not regretted it a day since! These are the best shears on the market in my opinion. The first pair I owned had an issue with the closing mechanism after approximately 8 months of use, but I easily returned them to REI and they were swapped for a brand new pair. Leatherman's offers a 25 year warranty with these shears, which is excellent. These are totally worth the cash! I haven't used the ring cutter yet, but it seems to be pretty legit. I have used every other aspect of this tool, including the seatbelt-cutter and everything works very well.
Just as you would expect with any Leatherman product, it is very high quality! They cut extremely well, everything form cord and hair to paper and clothes! They have adjustment screws for tightening and loosening various parts of the scissors. I had to tighten my scissors JUST a hair. In the pocket they hide pretty well. In your hand, even folded, they are pretty large, but surprisingly, when in your back pocket, I hardly notice they are there, and only about 1-1/4" of the scissors stick out. I am not an EMT, but I think they are a great alternative to carrying a knife. It all depends what you do for a living, but for me this works.
I bought a pair about a month ago. The holster hanging on scrub pockets a bit too heavy and get caught on everything on the ER. The ability to fold the scissors themselves is great. The scissors are probably a little much for everyday use, but on two separate occasions, a workbook needed to be cut off. I was the only person around that had the tool for the job. The scissors sliced right through the leather even reinforced. I haven't had a chance to use the strap cutter or O2 wrench. I would recommend these to anyone in the med field.
Shears work like a charm, I've cut through multiple layers of clothes all at once like paper. Not like other trauma shears which require a cut then reposition, you can continuously cut and move making removal of clothing faster. A few things I noticed, replacing the shears into the holster can be a bit of a pain, need to be aligned a certain way to slide in. I'd like to put my $75 shears in the holster and quickly resume working than putting them down and hope I remember where they are. Also a very very small minor complaint, I wish these would unfold a little easier, but maybe that's because mine are relatively new.
So far I am very impressed with this new tool. It is high time someone made a good set of strong medical shears instead of the cheap throw a ways. The seat belt cutter is good and sharp, the holster is well thought out and holds the tool in place wherever you need it. The tool was easily opened right out of the packaging. My Boss was so impressed with the she order one for all the rest of our Paramedics and EMTs. Overall very please with this tool! Home run leatherman!!!
These are well built solid yet folding. The plastic sheath holds the shears both open and closed, it does take some manipulation to get the sheath positioned right to feel comfortable using it both ways as it is probably not meant to be used both ways. During a day of rigging I keep them open for easy access and when not rigging they get folded up. My only complaint is the location of the belt cutter but this is probably in a location suitable for medical personnel, for rigging it would be more convenient to have it accessible at the tip of the shears. Definitely a solid purchase.
I'm a Trauma RN and I use these on the job. They are great. Tear thru clothes, boots, dressings...whatever is in my way. Folds down to 1/2 the size. The best trauma shears I've ever seen. Nice bonuses too- love the ring cutter. I was practicing with it by cutting nails- no problem. I bought a 2nd one for use around the house. Love it.
This is my second pair of these. My first pair finally wore out. I’ve been working for the same Fire Department for 27 years in South Florida and I have 5 more before I retire. I also work part time doing Crash Fire Rescue at the local racetrack. These things have been flawless for me. Besides cutting regular clothes, they cut the leather riding suits the racers wear when racing motorcycles. As much as I hate cutting those suits, because they are expensive, these shears have cut the leather with ease. Trust me if I have to cut the leather suit off you, the least of your worries should be the leather suit. You can get these sharpened and I would recommend a quality sharpening company. I never thought about sending them back to Leatherman because I didn’t want to go too long without these. I would also put a dab of 3&1 oil on them just to protect them after cleaning them. My last pair was at least 7 to 10 years old before I replaced them. The cheap shears my employer buys do their job but my crew knows that I carry these. In those instances where shears are needed, they look to me because they know these things work. Don’t be cheap. Buy them.
Definitely worth a consideration if you need something to perform in the most crucial moments. Trusted brand with a great warranty along with very well thought out tools like the carbide tip, seatbelt cutter, and even the oxygen tank wrench. This shear is a great one for all the preppers and healthcare workers alike!
