Light and interesting but not well built
I bought this jacket as I needed a mid layer for some hiking in the north of Sweden at the end of Summer. Light and with a tight fit, it was actually something I've been always searching for. Still, after a couple of days, the jacket started to fray in an insane way. I didn't walk around bushes or something which might have punctured it or damaged it, so I'm not really sure of what might have happened here. I still believe this might have been a warranty issue. Still mind that the fabric is delicate. More delicate than my merino wool sweater which by nature is already fragile. I was a bit disappointed in the end.
Worth every penny
I wanted something light that could retain warmth in the coldest of conditions; this jacket is very light and has a slim fit but keeps you very warm. I wear this every day, it's great for driving as well because I can't drive in bulky jackets. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a thin, light but warm layer; when it's real cold I wear a hooded sweatshirt underneath it and it's incredibly warm because it retains heat.
Great Jacket!
In short: love this jacket. Great under layer for climbing/snowboarding. Looks great. Pros: Synthetic fill so insulates when wet. It's cut specifically for climbing, so when raising hands above your head the bottom of the jacket doesn't lift up which is great. Very fitted and stylish and I get a lot of comments from random people saying it looks good. Great layer under a rain shell. Cons: None really. If you're planning on standing still or hanging out in camp I'd recommend something with thicker insulation. It's very fitted which is great for me being a thin climber but may be tougher to fit for latger guys. The fabric is on the thinner side and not designed for heavy abrasion and despite being cut for climbing it would not be ideal as an outer layer for rough trad climbs or bush-whacking. (I'm digging deep here...really like this jacket).
Sweet Jacket!
I bought this for cold weather running, shoulder season climbing, and as a mid weight layer. I haven't used it for any of the above yet. I have been able to wear it around town and like the look, feel, and breathability. It is an athletic fit. I purchased a large, but would've gladly taken an xl if they had it. I am 5'9" and have an athletic build. I do have large chest (46), and back muscles, so it's a little snug in those areas, but otherwise it fits fine and climbing mobility is good. The hand pockets are not harness or pack friendly. It has a chest pocket and hole for ear buds. Not important to me as I don't listen to music when climbing or on the trail. The pertex is tough and water repellent. I like the breathable side panels and arms. This is my first garment with Polartec Alpha as most of my outdoor gear is either primaloft or 800 fill down. Today was about 45 degrees and I was wearing just a short sleeve shirt underneath. I felt comfortable, not too hot, not too cold. Just right. Curious to see how it will perform during aerobic activities.
Insulated jacket that attarcts the ladies.
A very nice fit, I got compliments from women when I wear this jacket(unknown bonus). I only put this jacket to work on a 8 mile hike thru topanga canynon. I kept me warm from 1:00 am to 2:30 am. It actually kept me too warm... It does its job pretty well. I get cold easily, for me cold is 65 and under. Thats cold weather for us angelenos. The few times i have worn it in non hiking situations women tell me I look good in it. I plan on wearing this jacket every time i get.
Good but not great.
I ordered this jacket a few weeks ago and I've been mildly satisfied with it. It's much thinner and lighter than I thought it would be, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I've been cycling in it in 25 degree weather and it's definitely not very warm. My 4 year old Marmot equivalent is much warmer. The material looks great, but it definitely won't last long in the woods with thorns and branches scraping against you. Also, the zippers feel cheap and don't function smoothly. Overall, this isn't a bad jacket. It just doesn't have the warmth and durability that I need. I'd use it as casual clothing in an urban environment, but never on the trail. My decision is to return the jacket next month because it doesn't fit my needs.
Good Choice
I have used this Jacket for two winters now. I love it and constantly receive compliments on how good it looks and how well it is cut. It is on the thin side which works well for me as it easily fits under layers and still provides a lot of warmth when worn by itself. This may be as I run a little hot but I would still recommend it. It's only ding is its durability as it is beginning to show it's wear after what I think of a short time. I may only get one or two more winters out of which is sad as I have enjoyed the time I have had with this jacket.
Superior quality and functionality
I had been eyeing this particular jacket on REI for almost a year and finally decided to pull the trigger just a few days ago. It is my first piece of gear from Mammut and I must say, I am sold and it won't be my last. First off, I noticed the quality of this jacket is on par, if not superior to American brands we have come to know and love such as MHW, TNF, Marmot, Patagonia etc...The mammut Guye is soft, warm, light and allows for a wide range of movement. I am also glad Mammut stocked this thing with plenty of storage space by including three pockets on the outside and even one on the inside. Clearly, I love pockets. I am excited to put this fine piece of Swiss gear to the test this fall and winter! And as always, the REI nailed the customer service and shipping.
Very solid
I really like the jacket. I've had it for several months now and it's been keeping up! I hiked through some thorns the other day and it actually held up a lot more than I thought. The only problem is I can't push the sleeves up because it won't go past about half my forearm. I'm a thin guy too so it shouldn't be a problem.
Stylish, versatile
Bought the black one and love it. It's form fitting, flattering and can be used standalone or as a layer. It's not very warm on it's own, but a great breathable layer under a shell, with performance base layer, etc. So sick of North Face everywhere, this is a great performing alternative. Hope to see more Mammut at REI.
