Rated 4 out of 5 by from works great in the open, not in valleys Used in BWCA with 6 adults where there was no cell phone coverage. Reassuring in case emergency since I could text actual emergency info to responders (CPR in progress vs Fracture need held etc). Reassuring to spouses who could track our daily progress in wilderness. I was dissapointed in San Juan MTNS that no reception in valleys unless on ridges. MY Suunto GPS watch and Garmin GPS had better reception. Power lasts several weeks if only turned on and off to send messages twice daily. I bought a hard case since when the power button ainadvertly pressed on in my back packit is dead within 2-3 days and can't be recharged in the filed using batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this device I tell people that the InReach saved my life. Not literally. I love to backpack alone, and my wife and family were not fond of me doing this. Now I can with a lot more safety thanks to the DeLorme InReach. I used it on a 57 mile backpack across Isle Royale in September. Through pouring rain, it sent regular updates to my family, and allowed them to track me as well. The peace of mind that the InReach gives me and them is second to none. Easy to use and set up, with great customer support. I highly recommend this to all outdoor enthusiasts. Good battery life, and easy to boost with charge packs. Even used a solar charger.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great device Overall great device as mentioned in the subject line. Setup was really easy. Just make sure when activating you're outside. The device will prompt you to do so. I purchased this for a backpacking trip to stay in communication with my wife. Tested the preset messages today in the mountains and messages had no issues transmitting to my wife's cell phone. If you are concerned about safety and communication, consider the Delorme InReach SE. The subscription plans are great as you can deactivate and activate service when needed on the Freedom Plans. Under the Freedom Plans there are different packages that you can select. Lots of videos from Delorme to guide you through your buying journey.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stopped working within one month I was able to activate it without any problems and I have used it several times with good success in the mountains of British Columbia. About a month after purchasing it, however, it would not power on at all. I plugged it in to charge it, and still nothing. I took it back to the store to return it, and he called the technical support number, and they walked him through a complicated button sequence to reset the software. Now it is working again, but I don't like the idea that this could just quit working at any time. A product like this should be rock solid, so that you can depend on it when you need it. I love the concept, and it seems like a great product, but I have lost a lot of confidence in it now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First time- no glitches We used this device for the first time on a short backpacking trip. The first message that we send took a bit to get off to the recipients. I also felt like the battery was going down faster than I expected. HOWEVER, I am a first time user and even though I read al the directions online and that came with the unit I may not have made the settings to be the ones that will last the longest. Wih that being said the battery did last the entire time we were out. We will be using it again at the end of the month when we section hike the AT and complete MD. The following month we will do NJ. Another review may be coming.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use I went backpacking on the AT in West Virginia on a three night/four day trip. The battery life was excellent, even with the tracking feature (although I did turn it off at night). At the end of the trip, I still had ~75% remaining. I loved knowing that my messages went through, and it was nice to receive messages from people before I went to bed. The signal strength was really impressive too! I was able to send/receive messages quickly, even though I spent most of my time under the treetops.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, but needs work to get to great. I really want to love this device, but Delorme needs to put in some work before I'll love it. First, they need to fix the bugs. Right now, sync isn't working, so if I enter contacts on the explore.delorme.com website, they won't sync to the device (following their instructions). Second, IMO they need to allow shorter track point times than 10 minutes. Testing this out walking showed that 10 minutes didn't track the entire walk. On a motorcycle? 10 minutes could be miles of missing data. I still like it and will use it, but I'm really hopeful that it will be improved soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dependable. I recently switched from a spot second generation to this unit due to poor reliability of the spot message getting through and no response from Spot after contacting them several times. This unit gives you confirmation the message was sent and you can also receive text message replies. After 2 trips in all kind of weather and terrain this unit has performed flawlessly. Every message I have sent has gone through and every response has come through to me. The tracking feature is great and easy to use. So far battery life has not been an issue but it would become one on longer trips. I used it for 5 days and used @50% of the built in rechargeable battery. I have not looked in to chargers yet so I do not know how well they work. So far I am 100% more impressed with this unit over the spot unit and the customer service has been great so far.

Has anyone used this product internationally, specifically southeast Asia, or China?  How well do they work?

Asked by: rivermom
Yes, unlike other products in its "category" which have many dead zones and weak signal areas, inReach works literally anywhere in the world - via the Iridium satellite constellation.   You never have to wonder if you are travelling to a country where there may not be coverage, because inReach provides coverage in every country of the world.

Re: InReach SE.......what happens if you are sent an e-mail over 160 characters?  Does it truncate or reject it?

Asked by: herndine
Just to avoid any misunderstanding, remember that inReach will always accept incoming messages.  InReach will simply "splice" the incoming text or email into 160 character fragments so none of the message is lost or deleted.  Hope this helps.

Does the inReach SE function in forested creek canyons?

Asked by: CBC
The inReach SE 2-Way Satellite Communicator is designed to work in challenging conditions. Having a clear view of the sky is the best situation to establish a clear connection. According to DeLorme, tree cover should not be an issue most of the time. Being in a very narrow or tight canyon can affect the unit's ability to get a connection, but it is highly dependent upon the conditions in a specific location. If the unit has a limited connection it may just take longer to send and receive information. If the unit is unable to establish a connection it will notify you after several failed attempts, in which case you may have to move to an area with a clear view of the sky.

Can the unit receive current weather data or maps?

Asked by: conleyjf
DeLorme just released an update to get local weather reports for the cost of a message. I've used another free weather service (except for message charges) called WX2InReach for several years. Slightly more complex, way more options.

The product description says I can set up preset text messages, but not how many. Thinking of situations I'd like to cover such as "running late", "made it to camp", etc...

Asked by: DJayne
I found it on their support web site!  "Each inReach account is limited to 3 Preset messages."
