Utility Jacket
We purchased this jacket for our son last winter (2013-14) when he was six years old. Fit: The size XS was just the right size for him. Still fits but getting a tad snug for him as he approaches his seventh birthday. Performance: He wore this as an everyday "utility" jacket - to school, playing outdoors, and the ski slope. He has never complained about being cold or wet. Wear: Seams and stitching have held up well despite his best efforts. However, be advised that the top velcro patch along the zipper will catch the gray fabric stripe area on the right sleeve, as one hangs up the coat, shoves it in a closet, locker, etc. Over time the action of the velcro has abraded that area creating a wear spot the size of a saucer.
My 10 yr old son LOVES this coat
I bought this coat for my son as he just outgrew another columbia jacket i had bought him last winter. Dang how they grow so fast. He loves that this one fits comfortably and has the omni heat in it and of course he was overjoyed to know he was getting green as it is his favorite color. The sizing is great as I got a L and there is plenty of growing room and the fact that the sleeves grow with the kids is a great bonus. I would recommend this coat to others as it is light weight but extra warm because of the omni heat technology....no more big overly bulky coats in my house
Bad Sizing
Bought the Large for my 11 year old boy, 5'1" tall, skinny. He's a standard boys Large in most things. This coat was too big and bulky on him, he was not comfortable at all. Went to store and he tried on the Medium, it was too small. The coat seems to be good quality and offers a lot of features, if it fits your child, seems like a great coat. Sizing just did not work with my child. Ended up buying the REI Timber Mountain Jacket in a boys Large and it fits just right, with some room to grow. T
Will last 2 or 3 winters
This jacket is great. It's really warm and hold up to lots of snow. I love that you can extend the sleeves when your child grows. The waist is also long. It is a little bulky for skinny kids.
Fabulous warm coat with one small flaw
My small-for-his-age nine year old loves this coat and the size 8 fits him with room to grow. He says it's very warm and loves the way it looks. The only problem I have with it is the zipper. The teeth are fine and if it is not zipped exactly right (tricky for kiddos), the bottom pulls open. I may end up contacting customer service to see if there is anything they can do to rectify it. Otherwise a fantastic jacket.
definitely warm!
This jacket is warm. After trying it on, in less than five minutes, my son was complaining of being hot and was nearly sweating! It's cute and has lots of nice extra pockets inside and out to store things. Overall very happy and I have high expectations for this jacket this winter. So, we'll see! Oh my son is 5, about 45-50 inches tall and this jacket was perfect. Next year, he may need a bigger size.
Great fit, lightweight but very warm!
My son usually won't wear a coat appropriate for the weather because of bulk and it restricts his ability to play. This coat is lightweight but the reflective inside keeps him warm. The extendable sleeves give me the hope he will be able to wear it for more than one fall/winter season. If not, the high quality will ensure his little brother will inherit it. Great coat!
Excellent Jacket
I love my Columbia coat with Omniheat reflective, so I went with this for my 3yo for winter sports and everyday wear. His grandparents picked out a bulky designer coat which was just too puffy and not waterproof. (We had a hard time buckling him into his car seat with it on, and thus he did not like to wear it.) This Alpine Action Jacket seems perfect. It's warm and waterproof/breathable without the bulk. My son can move freely in it, ride his bike, fit in the car seat, etc. The hoodie and chin protector give great coverage in cold, windy conditions. And it's comfy enough that he likes to wear it. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars for function is I'd like to see a larger, more kid friendly zipper. He likes to practice zipping it himself, and a larger zipper would make it less frustrating. I'll be interested to see if the Outgrown system will allow him to fit in it next year as well, but for this year we love it.
Zipper too frail for a kids jacket
The coat is warm enough, but runs a little small. There will be no need to use the let out function on the arms, as I see my kid out growing the shoulders and chest long before the arms are too short. The biggest disappointment is the zipper which is a very fine tooth size, too small for an active jacket. It pulls open far too easily.
This jacket is amazing
I bought this coat for my son, he hates big bulky jackets but when we tried on this coat in the store he fell in love with it. We go in online because of the color choices available. Even though the coat isnt bulky it still keeps him warm with the omni heat, plus as a parent i love the fact that it has a grow with me option.
