Brings Your Rainfly Back to Life

I used this on my trusty old Sierra Designs Bedouin tent after years of sun & weather had stripped away the rainfly's water repellency. It really brought the water repellency back from the dead. I'm not sure about the UV blocking effectiveness, but I think it's cheap insurance to keep your expensive tent from being degraded by UV light. It's very easy to apply - just set up the tent w/ the fly on, hose it down to get the entire fly wet and then spray evenly & liberally. Wipe it down with a rag to ensure full coverage & to work the product into the nylon, then let it dry completely. Now you've got a rainfly that sheds water like new!

Resistant maybe, not waterproof in my experience

Love our 10-year-old Sierra Designs Alpha, but recently water started soaking through the rainfly during downpours (not at seams, but through fabric), causing a couple of puddles in the tent. After re-sealing the seams, I used Nikwax Tent and Gear Solarproof Waterproofing Spray on the rainfly, following directions carefully. On the next camping trip, in a light misty drizzle, water beaded up on the rainfly with no leaks. However, during a night of heavy thunderstorms, water soaked the treated fly and dripped through the tent ceiling, just like before the Nikwax treatment. I wonder if a second coat would make any difference. Really wanted to keep using this tent, which is in great shape other than the waterproofness. The original coating is not sticky, is not cracking, is not peeling. Hoped that this Nikwax spray would save it, but the spray seems to have limited effectiveness. Would love a response from Nikwax or REI with any suggestions. Should I have had lower expectations?

Works good

I put it on lots of gear. Spray slow even pumps. Dab drips with paper towel. Wiping old gear with Denatured alcohol first will open up the pores and help it stick.

Expensive, but worked great.

Cleaning the tent was the time consumer. Wiped it down three times till rag was not dirty. This product can be applied while tent is still wet from cleaning. Spray it all over, but protect items you don't want to have white rubbery specks stuck to them later (do outside). Wait a few minutes (in bright sunlight you may not have to wait as long or it will start to dry) then wipe off excess. Then, let it dry. You can feel and see a difference once it has dried. One half bottle did the rainfly and tent bottom of a 2P ultralight tent. I did not feel the tent was dirty enough to justify the cleaner with the same name.

SolarProof

I've used this product on my tents, motorcycle jackets, and my American Flag that I fly in front of my house. First, it does a very good job waterproofing. That said, the main reason I use this is the SolarProof. My Marmot Orange tents look like new, my motorcycle jackets have very little fading, and my American Flag stays looking great much much longer than before this product. My flag flies 24/7, with a light on it, and I've seen my flags life get extended from 6 mo.s to almost a year. It is in the sun everyday but it fades so much less than before. I promise you'll like this product.

Works as advertised.

Used on 10 year old Noah’s tarp that was no longer waterproof. Worked well. Served well on multiple days of rain on recent motorcycle camping trip headed for Newfoundland.

Used Once so far, seemed to work!

I used this to restore my REI Half Dome rain fly that has gotten heavy use for about 4 years now. On my last trip it rained constantly and the fly leaked. I bought this, read the instructions and applied it before my next trip. It is simple to use, but I did end up using most of the bottle for the rain fly. We did have some rain on the next trip and I was pleased to see that no leaks occurred! Only reason it gets 4 out of 5 stars is that I have not seen how it will hold up over time, and for the price I wish I could have used only about half the bottle, but if it works it's worth it. I feel like it should last another season or two. A good test will be Washington state this fall..

Excellent product - easy to use with great results

After years of dependable service my tent leaked during a sustaned period of heavy rain. The prospect of dealing with my soaked sleeping bags and other wet belings was bad enough without contemplating the replacement of my tent or at a minimum the fly. A search of the REI site turned up this product and I gave it a try. And I'm glad I did as it worked exactly as advertised. My tent is watertight again with the added benefit of solar protection.

I was in rei and inquired about my tent having a sticky feel all over it and notice small flakes falling off inside of the tent I was.info that this spray would add a coating to help to get my tent water repellent but I wanted the sticky residue gone this spray did eliminate that issue for how long.im.not sure but I have gone backpacking a couple.of.times and all is good also the flakes have decreased significantly I had just enough spray for a 2 person size tent inside and outside

I didn’t have luck with this product

I bought this to waterproof my half dome 2 tent from REI I bought forever ago. Now that has been a great tent ! Just recently the tent started to leak . Well I have had the tent for atleast 10 years so it’s bound to happen .so I chose this product. I just applied it and my roof still leaks . I did all the manufacturers recommended process as far as cleaning goes before I applied this product. It worked in a few areas but I would definitely not buy this product again. I will be returning it. And going with another product. Hey just because it didn’t work for me doesn’t mean it will not work for you! Best of luck!

Stupidproof waterproofing system

Who knew there was a specific cleaner for waterproofing gear??? This stuff is awesome, just throw your stuff in the laundry, and instantly renew the repellency in 1 wash. I've used this on a bunch of my military gear, from my Goretex jacket and pants, to even washing my 1 man tent in preparation for an upcoming wet field exercise. I've also used it to restore my Froggtoggs rain gear, and it went from getting me soaked to beading off water like a ducks back. I highly recommend this to all my junior troops, peers and friends to try out. Quite literally the easiest way to waterproof your stuff
