Excellent pack. Very highly recommended.

I borrowed this pack from my girlfriend (I’m a man) to take up Mt Rainier as my packs were all crag bags or 80L. Needed something in between that could handle the journey well. This pack not only stood the test, but blew my expectations away. 15°bag, puffy, base layer top and bottom, 4 pair socks, hat, neck buff, extra boots (skinned up the first 5k), crampons, harness, shell, ice ax, many beiners and slings, tent, split board, and poles. Yeah, all in that bag. Also, it’s water resistant for the snow and cloudy fogs on the mountain. This pack seriously took me to the summit and back in the most comfortable way. Fit me just fine even though made for women. I was amazed. Good work deuter, good work.

Wowsers!

Deuter has really nailed it with this one. The Guide 40 + 10 has a perfect blend of fit, function, and style. I'm a 5'6'' woman and the SL packs fit my back like a glove. The Alpine back system is designed for both max comfort and breathability and it really works. This pack is a great size for short overnights or packing in your climbing, ski, or alpine gear. The side entry zip is really handy in addition to the bottom compartment for ease of accessing all nooks of the pack. Complete with ice axe loops, daisy chain, and hydration compatibility... this pack really can do it all. I'm super satisfied with this gem, even down to the little flower hair tie that comes with it. Well done, Deuter!

My Go-To Alpine Pack

As a guide, I'm constantly looking for a pack whose weight and functionality are top-notch. I started using this pack for ice climbing and ski objectives this past winter and absolute love it! It handles the weight to axes, a rope, and skis very nicely, yet still remains fully accessible and easy to carry. I'm 5'8" and found the medium to fit very nicely and was not surprised at how many clients and friends commented on its look and durability. All in all, this pack is great and was not hung up after the snow melt. I've lugged climbing gear and a few tents into the back-country so far this Spring and it's performing equally well! For my Rocky Mountain trips throughout Colorado, this is my bag.

Awesome bag!

Such an awesome bag! Love the back and all the straps. Provides a lot of support and fits great. It has lots of different compartments, so nothing gets lost and everything has its place. Awesome top closure and draw string top. I could even carry a little dog in it! Excited to use this for some bigger adventures in the future!

Performs brilliantly on technical terrain

I have used this pack on a variety of climbs (rock, ice, and glacier), and I absolutely love the way this pack carries. On technical terrain it is a dream. It is streamlined which means it carries well, where my previous packs would start to rub under a heavy load the Guide 40+ SL never rubbed and the weight stayed off my shoulders no matter how much I overloaded it. When leading on ice it never hindered my movements, in fact I forgot I was wearing a pack all together. The two ice tool attachments work smoothly and allows you to access your tools easily. I also used the built-in sit pad on several occasions to keep my butt of the snow, and when I got caught out in heavy rains the water resistant material did a great job at keep my things dry inside. While I like the idea of gear-loops on the waist strap, it would be good if one side was a pocket instead for easy access to items such as lip-balm and sunscreen. A water bottle pocket on the outside of the pack would also be useful. Other than that, I love this pack!

Finally a pack for women capable of holding a rope, all of my climbing gear and a water bladder! It fits and feels great! Great on long hikes leading to difficult scrambles. It carries so much weight for me that I can move quickly without feeling exhausted. It also down poured the first time I used it and all of my gear stayed dry. I couldn't be more pleased.

The Best Pack for Almost Everything

It has loops! It has a side zipper to access the middle contents! I can stuff a pair of flip-flops in the ski holders until I learn to ski and use them as intended! It is made with nylon rip-stop, meaning I can cram the heck out of it with cams when I head to Indian Creek and I know its durable enough to handle it. I can also weigh it down with a computer, photo equipment and books and use it as a carry-on when I fly to Europe every summer. I take this backpack by bicycle to the supermarket and fill it with groceries. I carry a small highline setup in it sometimes, packing all the hardware inside and throwing my slackline on top, cinching down the straps to hold it in place. It's the perfect size to be heavy and yet not diminish your maneuverability. Hanging off rocky outcroppings to set up a highline means I need full range of movement. The body-hugging design helps keep the weight close to the middle of my back, and the shoulder straps are wide and padded, meaning when weighted it is as comfortable as possible. When I'm not carrying a lot of equipment I stuff the brain inside the pack and cinch the drawstring and the pack is two-thirds of the original size. As a summer backpacking pack, I can shove my sleeping bag in the bottom and my clothes, stove and food in the middle and I still have space for my ukulele in the side strap. What I want you to depart from this review with is this: This is the best all-around pack you could ask for. Alpine. Climbing Gym. Traveling. Groceries. Trekking. You name it. I use it for all of them, and the comfort is unbeatable. Some people focus heavily on weight; but if a pack is comfortable the extra material is well worth it. But take heed; you will have this pack for years, I have yet to destroy one.
