Everyday Workhorse
This is my third pair of Arroyo's. Starting back from when this shoe was the Taos. My feet run hot and I these shoes keep me comfortable. The last two pairs were worn every single day until they were done, the last pair would have done about a thousand days. I wear them to work, when I walk the dogs, as approach shoes and as camp shoes in the evening. I wore the last pair until they became just too disreputable! Being able to fit a custom orthotic is a big plus. The closure issue mentioned by others has never bothered me. I have replaced worn laces and in one pair laced them like traditional shoes. Tying laces isn't that hard! Personally I have experienced no quality issues with any Keen product. The new pair seem to have the same fit as the last pair and I am good to go for another 1000 days.
Not for distance
I've worn these a lot in all kinds of conditions and can say from experience that the Keen Arroyo may be fine for around town, but are definitely not for hiking. Around mile 3, the balls of my feet begin to burn and fatigue wearing this sandal until the pain becomes excruciating. No other shoe or boot I own causes this, including a pair of heavy leather Keen boots that I also hike with and love. I'm not sure why these sandals fail in this regard and I do enjoy wearing them around town and for shopping, because they look cool and are quick and easy to strap on, but I have to avoid them for outdoor activities where I walk anything more than short distances.
Finally had to replace, just plain wore them out.
I had to replace my first set of these sandals after 3 years of daily use, I had worn out the soles. Without a doubt these are the most comfortable pair of casual shoes I have ever owned. I bought them originally for a 5 day hike in the wilderness at Yellowstone because we needed water shoes for fording the streams. Since then I have used these sandals for walking, hiking, running, back packing, and for just lounging around on weekends. They have proven to be indestructible. The only issue I had was a broken shoe string, and a simple knot took care of that. If you want an extremely comfortable foot wear for casual use, then I strongly recommend these sandals.
Keen quality has gotten sloppy
About 10 months ago I ordered a pair of Arroyos taht replaced Taos in Keen's branding. They were the same shoe. I liked the removable foot pad and the back of heel support. The Taos lasted 3-4 yrs and weren't really worn out. And I had been pleased with 2 pair of Newports. After a few months with the Arroyo exterior wear was evident and I found that sole lugs aren't molded, but glued on - one came off. Another is about to. The fit is great when new and they fit well with my custom orthotic - a big plus for the purchase. But quality has tanked.
My 2nd Pair
Why mess with perfection. Everyone is different and not all shoes are for everybody, but these are a perfect match for me. I need a reasonably well supportive insole and I have slightly wide feet, plus I am quite bow-legged. This Keen sandals (and almost any Keen shoe) fit my foot extremely well, and they are supportive enough to keep my feet from totally rolling the shoe over on the outside. I put my first pair through many a mile, hiked the Narrows in Zion with them, and San Jacinto peak by Palm Springs. Plus I wear them all the time as casual cool shoes. I love 'em. 2nd pair are performing exactly the same.
Fabulous shoe!
I had originally purchased the female version of this shoe; it was incredibly huge. While attempting to exchange it for a smaller size...I discovered that my REI store did not have it in stock; it would have been a backorder item. Unfortunately, I could not wait...needed it for a sports summer camp nursing job! The sales associate suggested trying on a male version of the same shoe. GREAT SUGGESTION! I love the shoe. It survived four weeks of heavy usage in an active sports summer camp for kindergarten thru 10th grade. NO BLISTERS! My feet were not tired at the end of the day. I actually preferred the brown color over the turquoise blue women's shoe. SO LADIES....if your shoe is not available head to the men's section at REI!!
Shoulda looked in person first.
My Keen Newports were great, stitching failed, my size wasn't in stock locally. The Arroyos looked good, felt good, insole is hot and worthless for a sandal. I'll never buy a pair again. Had to add another aftermarket insole for sweat and odor, and they still feel too hot all the time. Not a good shoe. And the 'waterproof' leather faded incredibly after a whitewater rafting trip. Many of my 'pro' and 'con' and 'best uses' were cut off and limited. Bottom line, if you're a happy hippie looking to wear socks with a sandal to do light hiking they'll be fine. If you think they're a full coverage 'sandal', guess again.
Disappointed in replacement pair
I wore out my original pair that I bought a few years ago and was very happy with them. I bought these as a replacement. It was if the right and left shoe were manufactured in a different factory. The left felt longer and wider. Also the laces were inconsistent in length and incredibly long. I would say someone in quality control let these go by, but I tried a second pair when I returned the first and they seemed to have the same issue. My feet are the same size, so it was not an issue of one foot bigger than the other. I loved the first pair I bought a few years ago, but these not so much.
Keen Sandals
These are the most comfortable footwear I've ever had. I live in MN yet wear them everywhere, yes even in the snow albeit with heavy socks on. I took a trip to AZ and since space in my carry on was limited, these were the only shoes o brought. I wore them with no socks in the 90 degree sunny days. When my lace broke, the company sent me a new pair with no hassle and free of charge. I guess the only down side is there is no ankle support so for long advanced hikes you may need a backup pair of hiking boots. However these were made to be light, breathable with a rugged sole and are a great shoe for general hiking. I love how easily they slip on and lace up. Well done Keen!
Great Active Shoe for Summer
My sons have had youth Keens for years and they've been great so I thought I might try a pair to wear at times in place of my fairly rugged old open toe sandals of another brand. Likes: - The closed toe really adds a lot of protection and keeps twigs and stones from entering the shoe. The design protects feet well from gravel on a road. They're definitely up for some non-technical hiking. - The laces are easy to adjust tighter for hiking or looser for comfort. - They're tough. This model is built more like a shoe that has some openings so it can take you to some nice places (see photo). I was climbing and descending the rock formations at Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda with confidence. I wondered whether I should have gotten the more open, less shoe-like style when I first had them but my experience with them this summer has me liking my choice. I expect they will last a long time. - They're comfortable and supportive with the nice insole that they have. Compromises: - Coming from sandals, these feel much warmer than open toe sandals. I realize they are more closed for a reason so I do not lower the rating for this. They are best for temps in the low 80's or cooler. - Stinky feet! Maybe it's our genes but all the Keens in our family get pretty ripe after a long, hot day. When this happens we will sometimes leave them in the sun and this helps. Fit: - I almost always wear a 9.5 M shoe. Size 9 in this shoe fits me well even when my feet are hot and swelled; I can also wear them with socks. Fortunately, I bought them after trying them at my local REI. - My foot is medium and I was concerned Keens might be too wide. The width is fine for me.
