Flexible use stove for van conversion to table
Got this for a van conversion to go on drawer slides in a cabinet. Works great for my intended purpose, and allows me to lift it out to use outside the van for smelly items (when I'm not just heating water). No wind screen, so I will have to improvise (but I knew that). With the legs closed it is only about 2 inches thick. The surface is ferritic stainless, so magnets stick to it (magnets holds it down on my drawer slides). One star off for the regulator, as it is very touchy with the canister affixed underneath. Very hard to simmer. A 1lb propane canister adapter by G-works fixes this, as the G-works adapter has a much better regulator. Very good quality overall, good method for holding butane canisters underneath. Would buy again if needed.
Best stove I've owned to date
While I cannot attest to the durability of this stove as I've only utilized it twice, I am very impressed with the functionality and compact design. I live in a truck camper and my crummy 2-burner stove finally went out on me. Since, I've been using a jetboil with a platform to cook...needless to say, it's not been the most convenient trying to balance a pan on the small jetboil surface... I've used the Snow Peak to boil water and cook breakfast this morning after receiving it in the mail yesterday. The cost is a bit steep; however, I am completely satisfied! I use what I've got and plan to put this little unit to the test in the coming months. Everything I own from Snow Peak has been flawless, and I expect this stove to perform the same.
Partner Steel alternative
If you want a full stove to cook on for longer expeditions, that’s also light and durable. Look no further. Partner steel makes great expedition stoves but they are larger, more expensive and only come with a double burner. This is not comparable to the ultra light backpack screw on stoves that can only cook up to 8,000BTU with small ustensils. Personally I have this stove riveted to an aluminum case with all my cooking ustensiles inside. You can also purchase a propane adapter if needed but that’s a heavier source of fuel than iso-butane.
Nearly perfect with one major flaw
This stove is awesome in every aspect besides the flame adjustment. I have a flat burner as well, which has the best flame control of any iso stove I have used. The baja burner on the other hand is one of the worst. The valve is far too touchy and the flame constantly goes out when trying to maintain low heat. Once you get used to it its not terrible, but definitely a nuisance. If snowpeak matched the flame control and ignition system of the flat burner with the baja design, it would be the perfect stove.
Portable camp kitchen
I bout an old military medical chest that was set with built in divider. I managed to fill it with both old and new camp gear. The only issue I had was finding a stove that would fit in a 9.5 inch by 11.5 inch by 24.5 inch section. After looking at hundreds on line I found the Snow Peak "Li Baja Camp Burner". I seen how compact the stove was when pack so I bought two. When they came in I rush to see if they would fit and they did. For seventeen days of July this last summer we took a trip to see all the lighthouses in California. We camped for most of the time and cook breakfast and dinner everyday. I cook things like eggs and bacon, corn beef and hash in the morning. Dinners would be more elegant. With steam rice, pan seared fish with fresh vegetables. I read that it was hard to set to a low boiling, but I had no problems. I was also impressed with the fuel efficiency, with all the cooking, I only used one can per burner. Yes the cost was quite high but the construction, materials are all top notch.
Wanted to love it, but just returned it
My car camping kit has gotten a little bloated and overweight, so I thought a one burner stove might help reduce bulk. Love the overall design I could see on-line. This stove is very beautifully constructed, with ingenious fold away legs, folding control knob and a unique folding mechanism to hold the canister head. Unfortunately it’s very poorly ergonomically designed for actual use. The piezoelectric button is awkwardly hidden where it’s hard to reach partially blocked by the fuel canister attachment as is the flame control knob. Control knob is held in place by a sliding sleeve which can easily move in use and inadvertently fold out of the way. There is no wind screen, and snow peak warns against adding one as they are concerned with overheating the gas canister, which is in fact, too closely placed to the considerable heat it outputs. Worse, it can’t simmer as well as the stove I was trying to replace. It kept going out when I attempted simmering. Instructions also say to light it the gas canister needs to be upright THEN turned upside down and clipped into the stand. Turning off you’re supposed to reverse this process. I can’t imagine repeating this process throughout a cooking session, especially if it goes out repeatedly on simmer. I can refill my current stove’s cylinders or run it from a small 5lb tank I halve. The snow peak has to have expensive isobutane. It should come with a case to control and protect all the fiddly, delicate bits underneath, other than the unpadded bag they provide, and it should have a fine simmer control.
Fantastic stove for car camping
Overall a great stove. Boils water very quickly and easy to cook on. Folds up nicely to store. My only complaint is the difficulty of keeping the stainless steel clean.
