Durable, Flexible good all around water shoe
I bought this shoe to use as a hybrid water/mud/dry ground shoe in Nicaragua. I put this shoe through the paces over 10 days. Comfortable. Dried out quickly. Gave good traction in deep mud. Did not come apart in the Ocean. Only one complaint was the tongue on one of the shoes developed a crease on the inside(pict 2), which made the one shoe uncomfortable. I really had to work at it to get it back to being flat .
Lace solution
These are pretty good shoes if you use them correctly...not so much as Salomon wanted you to use them...but correctly. For example, I can see how these may cause some blisters as others have mentioned but they are very light and well-constructed so i bought these to use as short-wear, camp/river-crossing-when-hiking shoes and for that, they are perfect. As for the lacing system...Salomon would benefit from some r&d for sure, or just moving on past this design as they are flimsy and do loosen easily. I went old school and simply cut mine Salomon laces off and just added waterproof laces and tied them the good ole-fashioned way.
Worked well for Tough Mudder Tahoe 2015
Bought these as an experiment. Looking for a quick drying, mud & water shedding, trail running shoe for the Tough Mudder challenge. I had my doubts that these would hold up on steep, sharp rocky descents without blisters or chaffing, and give adequate traction on the quarter pike wall. However, they came through exceptionally well. The heel strap loosened initially until I realized that adequate tension was the key to its holding; once tightened down it stayed set to the next 9 miles.
Wait a minute...
This shoe is being rated too high for its intended purpose. OK, they are lightweight and comfortable, but absolutely are a joke for any serious water use. This is due to the heel-tightening strap. I loved techamphib 1, which had a cinch that would hold. I used those shoes for years and years hiking in muck and in rocky rivers until finally the exterior completely eroded. The second version's cinch did not hold, but I don't like to return things on a whim and still have them for casual use. So.. I was hoping that the techamphib3 would correct that... but no... it is even worse. The cinch holds for about three steps. I would return them, but I do like these shoes for their with lightness and good ventilation and will keep them for casual use. DO NOT buy them for wet conditions, unless you are just wading in a cement pond. Salomon... .please read this and improve the cinch for version 4!
Not as great as I hoped...
I had high hopes for these shoes! As a river instructor, I rely on solid footwear that I can wear day-in and day-out, that dry overnight, and that protect my feet from sharp rocks. These did not feel very sturdy, they take days to dry out, and the solomon lacing system is kind of annoying when getting in and out of kayaks all day. Basically, these are about as good as a pair of old running shoes in terms of being a water shoe. Waking up and putting on cold, clammy shoes is not ideal. I am looking for something better.
They stink - Literally!
Really wanted to like these shoes - I have several other pairs of Salomon's and love them all. And functionally these shoes were fine. Fit was good, though a little itchy on the insides, but that was manageable. What wasn't manageable is how bad they stink! I've had a few pairs of water shoes in my day and never had an issue with odor, until these. After light use (under 10mi. with a stream crossing or two), these shoes smelled terrible. It was soo bad I couldn't wear them in my Jeep (with top off!) and was embarrassed to wear them the raft on a white water rafting trip. Ultimately had to return them :(
Comfortable and lightweight with good traction
I bought these last year and have taken them on a good deal of different trips. The hold up well, and have much better traction than any other water shoe I’ve owned (keen, teva, vibram....). They are also lightweight, but madly comfortable, as the material is not cheap and stiff. The main complaint I have pertains to the mesh on the side. I was on the beautiful beaches of Oregon recently, and I noticed that small pieces of sea shells and pebbles got through, but could not get out. Additionally, these shoes do not drain the water as well as others. Overall they are the best water shoe I’ve found, but like most good products, there is room for improvement.
Comfortable but fit could use work
This is a good lightweight shoe for wet conditions. However, the cinch on the side doesn't hold the size I set, so the fit's not ideal. I got blisters just below my ankles from the slippage when I skipped socks. Not blisters when I wear socks. I like 'em a lot, but wish they held size adjustments at the heel better.
Best summertime BWCA footwear I've owned
I have been canoing in the BWCA and Canada for many years and I've tried everything from army surplus jungle boots to sandals. I'm looking for footwear that is comfortable, meant to be underwater, and can dry in a reasonable time period. Those Keen sandals with the protective toe box are probably good for some, but I find them uncomfortable. So I've been using other sandals for most water use and a second set of footwear (like sneakers) for nighttime use. I bought this shoe and I find it able to both in the same day. They dry out nearly as fast as my Tevas and are more comfortable. They also provide superior protection for your foot. I have the 3rd generation and I didn't have any problems with the strap/cord. I left it loose most of the time, but tighten it down when going through mud or other challenging terrain. The are not fly proof, but have better protection than sandals and don't offer the flies as many protected biting spots. I found the sizes tend to run small. I'm usually an 11, but got a 12 and it feels a little narrow on my foot (which is on the wide side with a high arch). However, in the field I had no problems and found they were very comfortable wet or dry. Great in the water and over rocks. Good traction. They seem sturdy, but I've only put them through a week of use so far.
Still looking
I have been looking for a shoe that dries fast and has good traction on a variety of surfaces. I spend a lot of time in the tropics hiking through muddy fields. I found that these shoes have poor traction on smooth wet surfaces. Also, they are somewhat difficult putting on and taking off. The back binding tends to loosen and is in need of continuous re-tightening.The upside: they dry fast.
