Great cot!
These cots are great. We've had two of them for about a year now, and used them about a dozen times. They're also great for guests when you run out of beds -- a couple of my kids prefer them to their nice bed! There are comments about how squeaky/creaky these are, and that's very true -- out of the box. There is a very quick and easy fix, and it's lasted the year we've had them: spray a teflon dry lube into the tube slots. I used PB Blaster dry lube. Stand the folded cot upright so the lube can drip down the tubes inside the fabric. Then assemble it about 80% and twist the fabric around to spread the lube. Done. It won't make a peep again.
Perfect for car camping or just a spare bed.
As a heavy person (5'9", 265 lbs) who, due to weight has to sleep on my stomach or sides for now, I bought this knowing REI's generous return policy. First night without a sleeping pad was squeaky, but with the straps tighter, I haven't noticed anything. I now use a wide/long 3.5" inflatable foam pad, but I leave the valves open. While it is heavy and bulky, it is easy to setup and most of all, get it back in the carrying bag! Spent three nights on it is a cold garage testing my setup and it was perfect. This will be perfect for my planned van camping across the western states in the spring while it is still cool, then again in the fall.
Prefect camp cot
Finally decided to get off the ground when sleeping,(even though our REI sleep pads were great!), and bought a pair of REI cots to try on our last camping trip. These were amazing! Super comfortable even before we added our sleep pads. We did notice the “creaking” when getting in and out, but nothing while sleeping. We placed our side by side in the center of our tent, so we’re still slept together. They are heavy, so definitely a vehicle/camp site item, not very good if you Have to pack items very far. Still, this is a great addition to our campsite and highly recommend.
Bad Design - Breaks if you sit on the end
I have used these cots for a while and have now gone through two of them (after returning the first). The design on the pivot points connecting the sleeping frame to the legs is very weak and means that if you sit towards the head or foot of the cot, the metal tabs bend and you are not longer able to fold the cot up. My 150lb significant other did this twice. I don't know how this is rated at 300lbs when it can't handle a 150lbs person sitting on it. I would not recommend this cot to anyone.
Great Cot for the price
Just got back from 3 nights of camping and sleeping on this cot was excellent! Super easy to set up and take down and collapses into a great stow bag. Most important: super comfortable to sleep on. Many thanks to the REI staffer who was super cool and set it up on the store for me to try out. I use a sleep pad/sleeping bag system but my young son slept on the cot itself with no pad and no complaints from him. This also gives me so much more room in my tent compared to bigger inflatable mattresses. I've read others who said it makes noise? I heard no noise and this did not squeak or anything others have stated. This is a great buy for those who want a great cot a fair price.
Sturdy
I chose this cot because it supports up to 300lbs. I'm 250lb and there is no noticeable give when I lay down. It was easy to setup in under 30 seconds with no instructions needed. Once you have the legs folded out, be sure to tighten the nylon straps so the legs stay in place. This also serves to keep the cot from making any noise when you lay down or shift positions. I am comfortable sleeping on my back or on either side in this cot, which surprised me. I am using this as my permanent bed in a smaller apt. I also wouldn't hesitate to take it camping, so long as I didn't have to lug it too far.
nice but noisy
This cot was so easy to set up. Anyone can set it up in 1 minute. I was very comfortable as well. I had 2 issues with it. I was on a mission trip and was I sleeping with several people in the room. Every time I sat on my cot or moved while sleeping on the cot, it made a very loud squeeky noise. I couldn't move without disturbing others in the room. I figured out that it was the seams rubbing on the metal poles. None of the other people had this issue with their cots. I was planning on returning the cot to REI and while packing it away after the trip, I also noticed a small hole in the fabric. I don't think it was that durable.
design problem
I have conflicting experiences with this cot. I completely agree with all of the positive reviews reflecting the comfort, ease of set up, and for the most part, their overall experience. However, we have three of them and have an issue on two of them with weak connection points where the legs attaches to the main frame. One broke (though if you position it will hold in place with weight on it) and the second it bent at one connection point and I suspect it will eventually break. Not an issue of weight---child and 2 adults each under 200 lbs. The price is reasonable but hard to decide if I'd buy another.
great Cots.
Since it was becoming difficult to go from horizontal to vertical, We moved up from our backpacking tent and pads to a larger tent (Kingdom6) and these cots. We travel full time and when We camp in one spot for a number of days We get a great nights sleep using the cots along with the REI 2-1/2”self inflating pads. They are easy to use with no extra pieces to connect. Pull out the bag, open up, pull each Jeff strap fully, set up on legs. They don’t sag, make a good bench. Lots of room to store things underneath. I don’t find them noisy when in use. I’m 5’10” and they are just right. Over 6’ and feet might hang over.
Better Than More Expensive Model
REI sells a deluxe camping cot, with built-in padding, for a higher price. I originally bought that one, but had trouble with its legs bending during use and then not being able to retract. (I weigh 165 lbs.-- WELL below what that cot is supposedly built to support.) I returned that to the store and exchanged it for this one and the difference in cash. I found this one to be sturdier, convenient to carry, and quite easy to set up and take down. I did add a 2" mattress on top, and was very comfortable with this combination. I don't know how comfortable the cot would be without it.
