I bought minimalist 1 month ago and used once under light rain for 1hour and 30 min. Check the photos and decide if this jacket is waterproof.
I recently bought this jacket and love it.. I was just in a major rain storm with 65 mph winds hiking up King Ravine Trail heading up Mount Adams in N.H. this jacket was incredible, bone dry in all that alpine rain and I was most impressed with how it blocked the 65 mph winds, just fantastic.. The way it hike under my backpack which was filled to 35 pounds and the jacket just flowed with it, great mobility.. The hood is great it moved with my head flawlessly and never got in my way when turning my head.. Also while coming down the mountain it got snagged on at least a dozen branches and not a single hole or tear in it.. The arm pit zips were easy to open and close with one hand.. Just cannot say enough good things about this coat I highly recommend this jacket..
I bought this with the intention of using it as a part of a layering system for winter 14er alpine assents in CO. It works very well with the wind, but I only really used it once. I wore it on top of a 800 fill down, wicking T and a base layer. It was about 10-15 F and 35-45 MPH winds and I was snug as bug. Yet it was a sunny day and I encountered no rain. On a rare rainy in day in Denver I busted out my rain jacket for its second use and after about 10 min in a decent rain, no means a downpour, I noticed the shoulders and sleeves were taking in water and not repelling like the rest of the jacket. Due to the layering system of this particular model I never felt the dampness underneath, but the cold was obvious. I would imagine it wouldn't take long before you're soaked underneath. I've read that older models of this jacket had this insufficient Gor-Tex application problem in the past and they supposedly fixed this. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and hope this was a leftover model, because surprisingly I still like this jacket. I'm taking it back for a replacement and will post an update if the original was a fluke or not. Take care!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have had this for 3 yrs now. I wear on-top of Mount Washington in the winter with 80+mph winds and -40° windchill. Doesn’t not disappoint. I also wear Snowboarding, Hiking, Mountain Biking, and camping. It goes everywhere. Pit zips are great pockets are great. Super lightweight and packable. The hood doesn’t completely cover a helmet but it gets the job done. This jacket is so good and so well priced all my buddies are getting them also. I pair it with the Marmot Featherless Hybrid Insulated jacket underneath for the cold days and it’s perfect.
Can't believe how badly my jacket leaks - I used it in a heavy rain hike, and it was all wet inside, mostly in the lower sleeves area, shoulders and spots around the chest. Only explanation I can come across, would be I got a lemon or a dud. I have other rain jackets (not Gore-Tex) and marmot garments that perform really good, so I was really surprised/shocked with performance. I am going to exchange this one, do the "shower test" and will update this review. In any case, a bit concerned with Marmot's quality control at this point, but it seems that I am the only one so far complaining about such a poor performance
While I was preparing for a trip to climb Granite Peak, the highest point in Montana, I was reviewing gear to minimize weight. I realized that my 20+ year old coat was far too heavy. It didn't take long to find that the minimalist was exactly what I needed in a waterproof outer layer. At less than 15oz it's one of the lightest on the market, especially for a GoreTex coat. It fits loosely enough that you can fit a fleece under it, but not so loose that you're swimming in it. Zippered pockets that also temporarily close with velcro are a plus. The only thing I don't need are the pit zips; every coat seems to have them and I've never found them necessary. Overall it's an awesome coat that's a great price and I'm certain it will be shown in my write-up of the adventure in summer 2021 issue of Distinctly Montana magazine.
I have had this jacket for 12 months, I have used it many times in anything from a drizzle to a downpour. The last two times I have worn this jacket, there seems to be a leak near the zipper. I have kept up with maintenance, given that I used this as a shell all winter and. I have used the tech wash and the repellent treatment. I am now sitting at work with a water spot right in the center of my chest. Up until now,the jacket has been great. The build seems to be excellent, and the details are great. One wish I had was for an inside pocket, which is hard to find with rain jackets. I imagine this is a great jacket, and I may just have a dud, I was honestly surprised that this leaked.
Have used gore-tex jackets and pants for 25 years as hiker, cyclist, runner. Similar problem as everyone else: Exterior of this jacket gets saturated wet from rain. Unusable. Sprayed it with gore-tex sealer but didn't help. Still saturates. Also does not insulate well against cold even when dry. Have used this for 3 months. Doubt this is gore-tex because it works so badly. Nice design to the jacket, terrible exterior fabric in my experience. Doubt I will buy from Marmot again.
I've had this jacket for around a year and have had issues with the sleeves wetting through. Now having issues with the inside lining peeling off. I expected this jacket to last quite a bit longer. I wear it almost daily, with about 15-20 minutes of biking a day.
Gore Tex and the sleeves can Velcro so you can maintain body heat. If you want to cool off put zippers in sides can open for cooling
