Your Favorite Jacket

I bought this jacket as a replacement for an old Patagonia puffy jacket. I feels very true to size and seems to be great quality (although I've only had it for one month). It was very comfortable with a long sleeve shirt while on a 50 degree hike. It was also great into the 30's with a thick sweatshirt underneath. I'm 6'1, 185 lbs with average shoulders and a 32 inch waist. The large fit great with room for a thick base layer. The medium may have also fit but would've been more of a slim, tighter fit. If you have any Patagonia gear, I would describe the Outdoor Research large as a great compromise between Patagonias medium and large.

Great insulation layer

This is a great jacket if you want something light-weight and warm. It works great for keeping you warm on hikes or at night when it gets really cold. I use it primarily for camping and hiking when I'm on climbing trips and during the cold winter months this has been a lifesaver! Some of the down comes out but its been so little that I've barely noticed, it seems to be very durable and I havent had any rips or tares on it yet and since I climb in it at times I am very glad for that. I also love how compressible it is, the inside pocket can be used as a container for the whole jacket. This is a great product and I would highly recommend it!

Nice piece of safety gear

I feel the hoodie is more of a heavy weight sweater then a jacket. Purchased the piece, at a heavy discount, to live in the bottom of my winter pack to serve as the extra layer in case of the need to overnight outside. It is lose enough to wear over 2 or 3 base layers and thin enough to fit under a parka. An outer layer is mandatory for protection from snags, sparks and wind. Length is sufficient to cover the gap between upper and lower garments. With the hood up, over a winter hat, it serves as a makeshift sleeping bag at a fraction of the weight and volume. I have spent several nights out in the low teens and have been comfortable. This piece will be too warm for any level of activity more strenuous then standing around the fire.

Fantastic Down Jacket for the Money

This jacket is an awesome value for the money (I have used some significantly more expensive that haven't held up). I am constantly outside in the brush as a wildlife biologist and frequently abuse my clothing and gear. Having used this jacket for over a year, I can say that it is durable (only one micro tear on the bottom edge), warm, surprisingly wind resistant, packable, and lightweight. I purchased a XL (for reference I am 6'2" and a lean 185) and it is slightly big on me in the chest and stomach regions, which is by design for layering purposes. If I were to use this only around town (or not layering) I would purchase a L. Great job OR!

Perfect Balance

I've been searching for the perfect replacement to old TNF "Michellin Man" down that I got in 1996, and this is it. Tried everyone's (Hardwear, Patagonia, etc) and none had the combination of durable material, cut, and weight of down this bad boy has. The hood is big to accommodate a helmet, maybe too big when you aren't wearing one. The inner "glove pockets" are ingenuous and very much appreciated, but the elastic along the top of them is a bit too tight, causing the jacket to bunch around them. Hard to describe, but if this is the biggest gripe I have then I'm doing pretty good! Love this jacket, highly recommend as a medium weight warning layer.

comments on sizing

I purchased a Transcendent Hoody in size Medium, but had to return it due to a sizing issue. I am 5'10" and 160 lbs, of average build but with slightly wider than average shoulders. The "athletic" cut of the Transcendent fit me beautifully, except right under the arms where it did not allow enough room for my upper chest (probably due to shoulders). That is, it failed the "bear hug" test. If you are similarly built, consider going one size larger than usual or another garment. I will say I thought the Transcendent is a great garment, with beautiful materials and construction. It just didn't allow quite enough room, so I had to go with another jacket.

Best light jacket ever!

This jacket was the first jacket I have bought from Outdoor Research. I practically wear it every day now that the weather has turned cold. The construction is great and I have lost very few feathers. The fit is just perfect, I am 6'2" #185. I've got several compliments on the look of the coat. The 600 fill down is perfect for temps around freezing. Water beads off for a little bit, but you will want a shell for prolonged moisture. The pockets are lined with micro fleece and all the zippers work perfectly. I have a little trouble stuffing it all in the chest pocket, but I hang it up anyway or put it in a compression sack when backpacking. You won't regret buying this!

Always in my ski pack

I keep this in my pack on backcountry ski trips. It doesn't take up much space and is always there in case of emergency. I'll also put it on when I stop for lunch, especially on a summit or other exposed locale. On cold days, I may start out wearing it until I warm up. It's also good to have in your pack when hiking in cool weather throughout the year. ... I also wear around town a lot.

Very Nice Jacket!

Very nice hoody. Not overly down-filled, but enough to keep you warm when layered. Light weight and comfortable. I really like the breast pocket for my phone while hiking. The pocket blends into the jacket, practically invisible. The jacket is form-fitting. Normally I like a little more room for layering but it does work well with a back/day pack, no bagging. I really like the look of the jacket. I bought the dark blue with the lighter blue zipper. The hooped is a full size so it fits well over a baseball cap. The waist adjust, entsmwork well and when cinchced really keeps inmthe warmth. Overall I really like this jacket.

Great hoody for the mountain top

This is my first down hoody and I bought it despite the fact I already owned a decent MEC primaloft hoody. You just can't beat the weight to warmth ratio that this hoody provides. It's super comfortable, looks great, and fits really well. It'll even zip up into one of the side pockets and transform into a go anywhere pillow. Just prepare yourself for random women to put their hands into your fleece lined pockets! Burnt the inside on a UCO candle (no idea how) but it patched easily with some duct tape : )
