Protects tent floor!

My foot print are going on 8? years of hard use and abuse. It's been used from the Rockies to Alaska and it still looks brand new. For the first time in 8? years, I finally had to reseal the footprint to keep it from soaking up water during down pours(think tundra with rain forest like rainfall for months on end). This footprint has saved my tent floor from jagged rocks, branches and the like. Also a nice indicator that my tent floor should be redone as well as they are both coated the same. I'd imagine I would have had to reseal my tent floor many more times if I did not have this foot print. Excellent product!

Poor Fit

The design of this footprint if poor to say the least. As mentioned by previous reviews the alignment of the grommets is too long and too wide allowing so much play that the footprint doesn't stay in place under the tent thus defeating the purpose of a footprint. I chatted with an on-line specialist and was also forwarded onto REI's QA group. They basically told me that there is nothing wrong with the design and to express my concerns on the review section of this item. I was sadly disappointed that REI wouldn't own up to their design flaw and propose a solution. I'm considering returning both the Half Dome 2 Tent along with the footprint which it too bad because I really like the tent and the REI products. Come on REI - I expected better than that. Please let me know once you fix this problem.

Perfect fit, small size, light weight

I have always just used tarps to throw under my tents when car camping. This method is fine, but requires more space and weight, so when backpacking or kayak/canoe camping every ounce and cubic inch matter. This is the first footprint I have ever bought but it is worth it. Yes the price is a little much for a thin piece of fabric (why I only gave 4 stars), but it fits perfects, is color-coded (not that it needs to be), and packs up light and small. I just roll it up with my tent and stuff it all in the tent sack. Can't tell the difference. Get it during the Anniversary sale and save some money!

Great product!

This footprint is indeed well designed for the Half Dome 2. Setup instructions specify that the tent pole ends should be placed through the footprint grommets before the rainfly grommets, and if you're not using the rainfly you can even put them on before the tent grommets. Then the footprint will stay under the tent at all times. It is over-sized so that the tent poles only apply tension on the tent fabric, not the footprint, so that the bottom of the tent stays taut.

Does what it's supposed to

If you place the grommet on top of the tent grommet the footprint stays attached to the tent no matter what. Then with the rain fly grommet under everything and cinched down, it makes the tent one movable piece. The foot print does exactly what it was made for. Extends the life of the tent and even works as a minimalist shelter (which I really need to test). Beyond all that it's great and something I'm very glad I purchased.

lightweight; does the job!

i used to carry around a heavy plastic sheet as ground tarp for my half dome 2, but after that was finally destroyed I picked this up. It's great! it gives me adequate protection for the tent, it is easy to setup, and it is very light and compactable - much better than what i had before. i used it on thanksgiving weekend in the adirondacks in wet snow and i did not have any water leakage into the tent. i did not have any problem with sizing or setup.

Needs minor rework

After purchasing the footprint for the REI Half Dome 2 and having some difficulty in attaching the footprint to the poles, I took the tent and the matching footprint back to REI for advice. A REI associate and I measured the dimensions of the tent and the footprint and set up the tent and attached the matching footprint in the store. My footprint and a new one off the shelf both measured the same and had the same grommet spacing. It was found that the foot print was the right size but the location of the grommets do not allow a secure installation which makes installation difficult in even a slight wind and allows the footprint to migrate under the tent...possibly allowing collection of water under the floor of the tent. The associate said he would call the manufacturer this week and see what they recommend. Barring getting rid of the footprint all together, I would most likely try to install additional grommets closer on the attaching straps with a grommet repair and installation kit avail in store. REI associate said that I could return the footprint even if I tried to modify it and it didn't work. Will see what the manufacturer says first......

Half Dome 2 Foot Print

This is not easy to set up with the tent because this footprint's attachment points, the grommets, are poorly placed on the footprint's webbing. In both length and width it is approximately 6" too long. Consequently the footprint is forever falling off the ends of the tent poles while your are trying to set up the tent or fine tune it's location. This is especially problematic when trying to pitch the tent in a wind. As you pick up one corner to place the grommet on the pole, the wind gets under the tent lifting it, allowing the other corners to fall off. The solution to the problem would be to move the grommets in toward the footprint's fabric. Bottom line; it performs it's intended function, but is unnecessarily difficult to install and keep installed.

Wish I would have read the reviews...

I bought the Half Dome 2 tent and footprint today at REI for an upcoming backpacking trip. To practice, I pulled everything out and set it up in my living room, only to notice the same problem that many others on here have brought up... the footprint doesn't fit snug to the tent. The actual size/cut of the footprint is great, however the grommet placement on the straps is really wrong, and the straps aren't adjustable to correct the issue. Like others have said, the tent went up great and i'm really pleased with everything except for any minor adjustment makes the footprint move, bunch up or fall off the poles (and I'm inside with zero wind factor). At first I thought I accidentally picked up the "Plus" size one by mistake, but I got the right one. I'm going to try to use the trick of attaching the footprint to the pool before attaching the tent and rain fly, or adding new grommets in the right location on the strap, but this really is a design flaw. My concern is that if it doesn't stay in place, its effectiveness drops and will make me contemplate returning them both for another setup. It's a shame because I really like the tent. We'll see how it goes.

Seems Like the Wrong Size

Like others have mentioned, the grommets don't line up like they should. There's way too much slack, so I end up attaching the poles after the tent and before the rain fly so it stays attached and under the tent. I've used this under my tent during multiple wet trips and on rocky, rooty terrain and have never had an issue. Overall, worth getting on sale but I wouldn't pay $30 for it.
