Rated 1 out of 5 by from waterproofing fail I purchased this item after reading all of the excellent reviews. I have a fairly new Marmot Gore-tex jacket that desperately need to be re-waterproofed after a washing machine detergent mishap. First I tried applying the wash-in treatment via the "hand-wash" method. No luck. So then I tried the washing machine method and awoke this morning to find the jacket is still happily absorbing water droplets, ARGH! It did not work AT ALL. I am not sure that the wash-in product is the way to go, have used spray-on in the past and will be reverting back to that. Not sure why this did not work for me while working for others.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money I've tried this three different times on an older North Face Mountain Light Goretex rain jacket. All attempts have failed to last more than 15 minutes in a heavy rain. Most recently, I used 1/3 of the container vs. the recommented capfull after washing and soaked the jacket in warm solution for half an hour turning every 10 minutes, rinsed, and dried as directed. Moisture penetrates the out fabric after 5 minutes. I then used 1/3 of the bottle again following the directions. Repelled water for 15 minutes. Also, the directions are hidden under the main label with a tiny graphic telling you to peel back to access. No directions on Nikwax website either. Bad design and bad product. I was an optimist about this product until 3 tries with 3 bottles failed to work on a $300+ rain jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nearly perfect 4.5 stars! Wash your waterproof / breathable shell garment according to Nikwax's instructions (surfactant-free powder detergent will do the trick as well as Nikwax tech-wash ), and use TX-Direct and your Durable Water Repellant (DWR) performance will be as good as new!I have successfully treated 1-2 garments in my top-loading washer by lowering the water level and using only 1/3 of a bottle of TX-Direct, as per the front-loading instructions and the treatment has held up as well as on garments washed with per top-loading instructions (which call for a full bottle and large load setting for up to 3 garments). This product only has 2 drawbacks:1) the cost: at [$] per wash, it's pricy, especially if you wash your gear a lot. Use the front-loading instructions, and [$] to treat 2 garments makes it much more cost effective.2) as mentioned by another reviewer, this product can leave a faint, hazy residue in creases and seams when you're done. This residue can be rubbed off with a wet towel, once the garment is dry.Note for those who claims TX-Direct permanently spotted their garments (something I've never seen over 20 years & hundreds of washes): you need to fill your washer with water first, and allow product to agitate BEFORE you throw your garments in. If you poured this DWR wash undiluted directly on top of a garment, then that's what caused your spots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works buuut This is pretty easy to use, and works well, but it's not a miracle worker. It brought back an old REI hard shell from the useless bin, but it's not as good as it was on day one. Better fabrics may take and work better though. I used the hand wash method and found it pretty simple, and defiantly more economical than using the whole bottle for one jacket. This may be part of the issue I had too, but it's hard to say.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entire family uses yearly The nikwax products are unbeatable. TX Direct revives waterproofing and ventilation. We make a yearly laundr-o-mat trip to TX Direct and Polar Proof everything in our winter and hard weather wardrobe. There are funny little gunk balls in the pockets and crevaces of the washed clothes but they wear away after a couple days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect! I applied this to my snowboarding gear and it worked well... until I hit a wet day. At that point, when the fabric got a little damp, it's like I never washed out the excess and my jacket and pants were covered with the waxy stuff (the way looks right out of the bottle). Maybe it was a rinsing problem, but I am a little skeptical about applying this to my rain jackets. Other than that it's kept me dry all winter!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh I thought this would make the rain bead and run off: not so much. I washed withvthe Tech wash. Then I washed with the waterproofing. Then I hung to dry. Then, hours later I went out in a light rain. It was ok. Water was beading but I still had absorption areas. Buy it again? Doubt it. I'll try something else.
