Rugged Cookset - But You’ll Want to Add a Fry Pan

This cookset provides a rugged and complete setup (minus the stove) to cook outdoor meals centered around a pot - think boiling water, heating chili and stews, making pasta. All the components are very high quality, the pot is big enough to cook or heat for 2-4 people, and it heat heats evenly and quickly. The drain holes in the lid are a useful bonus that allows draining pasta without needing a colander. But by itself the set is problematic for covering all the bases because it’s not the right shape for sautéing or making things like pancakes or fried eggs. If the buyer adds a frying pan, then they’d have a great setup for car camping / overlanding that doesn’t take up too much space. Stanley makes a square fry pan using the same construction and I’d highly recommend getting it to round out a complete outdoor cookset. The setup would be almost perfect for backpacking but the heavy duty stainless steel pot is way too heavy for that. But I liked the pot so much that I’ve started using to cook on our kitchen stove. Bottom line for me is very high quality but incomplete setup to complete a road cookset. Add a fry pan and you’d be very happy with it.

Nice little cool set

This is a nice little pan set with a lot of convenient and thoughtful features. I used it in my home kitchen to test it out and then in my camper van. The pot is a good size for my group of 3, but the 2qt capacity may get a bit small for larger groups. The pot and spoon unfold easily, but the pot handle doesn’t automatically lock into place. After I remembered to do that, the wire handle felt more solid but still a bit flimsy for the weight of the pot, especially full of water. The spoon is supposed to lock automatically but mine needed to be opened with a lot of force to do that the first time. It seems to work just fine now, though!. I made mac and cheese, so I used the lid as a strainer. It took a minute, but I really liked having the strainer integrated in the lid. Putting the pan back on the stove, it seemed to keep a nice, even heat. Nothing burned or stuck and the pot cleaned up well after use. It all folds down neatly and fits really well in my van, and I liked it so much that it earned a permanent place. My least favorite feature was the feel of the handle with a fully loaded pot. My favorite features are the sturdy pot itself and the well-designed lid.

Great piece of kit!

This is a great setup for car camping. I had another pot and pan I've been using in my 4X4 I am replacing with this kit. It's held up pretty well with use on a gas stove and worked really well on a wood stove. On a backpacking stove it was a little large but manageable, and there are the usual issues with hot spots, however this pan did better than most others I have at distributing the heat. I don't think I'd bring it along on a one or two person trip, but it would be perfect for a group trip making larger meals where you might split up some group gear. I take several of those a year and will be taking this one at least a couple of those. The finish seems durable and the handle is very sturdy compared to others. The lid was great for draining pasta and the trivet and silicone pot holder came in very handy. The only reason I am giving it four stars is the included spoon. While it's a good size and study, I wish it had some large teeth for scooping and stirring pasta and that it fit better in the pot so it didn't take up so much space. Other than that it does the job.

High quality material!

Whenever it comes to quality of a product I would give it a 10 out of 10. But whenever I give it true function, I would give it more of around a 7. The reason for that is because this is not a product I would take backpacking but definetly something I would take car camping with me. Its very sturdy, has a solid casing, and made from good material. This is a great product for the family because I see this as a one time buy and never needing to buy another because of how great it is.

Sturdy pot for car camping

The Stanley 5-Piece Wildfare Pro Saucepan Cookset is well-made, sturdy, and a definite upgrade from my previous car camping pot! I appreciated the locking mechanism on the handle that allows the handle to close over the lid and lock things inside when packing up. While car camping at Mount Madonna in California, we made pasta to try out the holes in the lid and felt that it drained out nicely. I loved how the spoon folded out, too. I’ve never had a designated serving spoon while camping! I gave it four stars because, at times, the handle didn’t feel hefty enough to hold the pot when it was full of water. Also, I couldn’t really find a good use for the trivet or the tiny cutting board. If you are car camping anyway, there’s no need for such a tiny cutting board! This cook that has replaced my Standard car camping pot, but is definitely not an option for backpacking due to its weight.

Great set-up

This works great for cooking on top of the fire pit and to use w/ RV. Compact and easy to use in both applications. Packs up very compact and very convenient w/ tight storage lids. Cleans up very well after warming a meal after hiking.

Good Front-country Option

Received this product, free, as part of a promotion. The pot has a sturdy bowl that disperses heat well. I used it on a camp stove and a backpacking stove. The cookset is a bit too heavy for backpacking, but a good option for the front-country. The only drawback is that the folding handle on the pot seems a bit weak in comparison to the pot's heft. I would hesitate to load up the pot fully. The folding spoon was a big hit with the group.

Stout Stanley 5-piece saucepan cookset

The Stanley 5-Piece Wildfare Pro Saucepan Cookset is a well thought out design for taking along for car camping. Although it is not intended for backpacking due to its overall weight, it makes a wonderful addition to a field kitchen for car camping. The stainless steel design has a nice thick base which distributes heat evenly. I took it with me camping and first tried it out by heating up some soup that was pre-cooked. Using my butane fueled camp stove, I purposefully heated the soup up hotter than I normally would just to see how much it would cause the thick soup to burn and stick to the inside bottom of the pan. I found that with normal stirring it would not burn and stick at all. I was pleased to discover that this Stanley pan performed better than my favorite saucepan that I've been using for 40+ years at home. That old saucepan is made of thinner stainless steel and does not distribute the heat nearly as evenly as the Stanley. A few days after I'd returned home, I was about to boil some pasta to make myself a meal and decided to use the Stanley on the stove at home. It performed just as well as it did "in the field". Although I only boiled enough pasta for one meal for myself, the pot still boiled over a little when I didn't pay attention (one expects that when a lid is on a pot while boiling water). I had thought perhaps that the perforations on the lid might prevent that from happening, but not so. Speaking of the lid, the flip-up lid handle had a nice tab of silicone attached to it which stayed cool to the touch while in use; and once the pasta was done, this made it easy to hold the lid in place while pouring the hot water into the sink. I first tried pouring out the water through the vents in the lid but it seemed to take a bit too long so I resorted to my old tried and true method of shifting the lid off the pot to allow the water to drain out quicker. The cookset includes a folding serving spoon, the handle of which locks securely into place after it opens up. The spoon's "bowl" is of a good size for serving up a decent quantity per scoop which was pleasing. The included silicone trivet and cutting board fits nicely into the saucepan. I usually use a round cutting board that is a couple of inches larger in diameter and at first glance, I thought this cutting board would be a bit too small for the amount I was cooking but it never seemed that the veggies I was cutting up were too crowded. Although I did not need to use the trivet for setting the pan on a table, I can see where it will come in handy in the future if my wife puts our vinyl "tablecloth" on a camping table. The handle on the cookset at first seemed flimsy, but I soon realized that the sliding "keeper" needed to be slid close to the pot in order to make the handle secure. Once employed thusly, the handle was solid as a rock. The same slider ensures that when the cookset is closed up with the cutting board, trivet and folding spoon inside, the handle holds it all together very securely and there is no worry about the components getting scattered about if the unit gets tossed around.
