For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

This is my first pair of La Sportiva footwear and I can say I'm now a fan. First impression though had me a little worried. They were not comfortable right out of the box. However, after a couple of hours wearing them they started to break in and feel better. I generally wear a cushioned, neutral running shoe and these definitely have a different feel. Not as much bounce to them. Shoe is also definitely narrower than my regular running shoes. Initially, felt like the toes on my right foot were crammed in the toe box but that ultimately seemed to work itself out. After a few days of wearing them around the house, I finally got them out for a run. Started on pavement and ran to the trail which was covered with mud, snow and ice. I really appreciate how supportive these feel on my feet. Fit like a glove. Feel very stable and secure on uneven terrain. I've been trail running in these shoes a few times a week for the past three weeks and am definitely impressed. Best trail running shoes I've owned so far.
The La Sportiva Karacal is my first introduction to La Sportiva shoes. When I first slipped these shoes on I immediately felt how comfortable they were out of the box. It didn't matter if I was walking casually, going for a run, or hiking on a trail they felt good. I will say the roof of the shoe felt a little snug on the top of my foot. I will see if that loosens up after more use. It's definitely a three season shoe and I found that out after an unexpected dump of snow. I felt the cold air flow right through on to my feet, which did get me excited for the breathability of the shoes during the summer. The shoes even felt good walking through the airport and flying with them on. Overall, I have really enjoyed the Karacals so far and I look forward to using them more when the weather warms up.
The Karacal are the best trail running shoes I have purchased yet. The fit, especially around the heel and entire ankle area is like slipping your foot into a bank vault full of pillows. Absolutely the most comfortable I have ever purchased.
I'm using them for hiking in Western mountains. I tried them out in Sedona, AZ; 21 miles in two days on dirt, bare rock and steep mixed dirt/rock. They have outstanding grip, cushioning and lateral support, while still being light and nimble. The mesh fabric at front of shoe lets some fine dirt in, but it is worth it to have great ventilation. To have enough toe room for downhills, I had to size up 1/2 size from my normal men's 10.5 (44 to 44.5 Mondo). Otherwise a perfect fit on my narrow-ish foot with medium to high arch. Bought these after I tried the Altra Long Peak - they were impressive but too wide and didn't have enough lateral support.
I highly recommend the Karacals. I’m on my second pair now. I’ve had the Kaptivas and Bushidos from La Sportiva as well. I like all of the La Sportivas I’ve tried, but the Karacals blow the others away. I love that La Sportiva is a narrow shoe, but the Karacal actually feels mildly wider in the toe box while remaining narrow in the mid foot and heel. It allows my forefoot to expand a little more while being snug in the mid foot where it matters most. Excellent foot protection for rugged trails. The toe is even more protected than I am used to as well. The lugs are deep with great traction. Checks every box for me. I think they run a tad small. I went a half size bigger than I do with most other brands.
Ive been running in Hoka Speedgoats for a while but I'm done with the narrow toe box and wanted to try something new. I've been hunting for the unicorn of shoes and I think I just found it with the Karacals. These are basically the center of the vin diagram for Colorado (or any rocky technical place) trail running. Roomy toe box, decent amount of heel drop so they aren't "flat" like Altras, quite comfy and plush but super responsive, stiff, agressive tred and they even have a rock plate which is a HUGE help after you've hit 25 miles on rocky trails. They're lighter than the new Speedgoats, and super breathable. However, when I tried them on in the store I was very skeptical. They didn't feel very comfy. Here's what I can say - all the reviews saying this shoe requires a break-in period is right on the money. I'm SOO glad I took the chance. I wore them around the house and around town for two days and then headed out on a 20 mile trail run with 3k vert and lots (and lots) of rocky trail. They were excellent! When I get to that mileage in my other shoes, my feet get really fatigued, which I attribute to not having a rockplay and not stiff/responsive enough. BTW - I read others got a hotspot in their arch. Not sure why but I totally got the same thing. It had me worried at first but it never amounted to anything and eventually went away. For technical terrain these have great lateral support, my old shoes would sometimes feel like my foot was rotating inside them, I didn't get any of that with these. In terms of the uppers, we'll have to see over time but there were several points today where I jammed the sides of the shoe on the sides of rocks and I don't see any sign of rip or potential tear. Were they 100% perfect? No - there were a couple of very minor complaints. Only two are noteworthy, they do run small. I wear a 12 and went with 12.5. The fit was perfect in 12.5 but if someone doesn't know that they run small and order online then it's a hassle. Why not just size them up a half size? The second complaint is that I felt that the top two eyelets were rather high up on my ankle. I started off with a runners knot, but that was putting pressure on on the tendons right in the bend of my ankle. However, when I switched to a traditional lacing and knot they did fine. I was worried I'd get some heel slipage that way but I detected no heel slipage on the ascent. Also, I cranked them down on the decent and didn't experience any jammed toes. I also noticed that the the lugs aren't super deep and the sole doesn't have a ton of thickness to it,, so I'm curious to see how many miles I get. Closing thoughts: If you're only running or hiking on dirt single track then these are probably overkill, plus with shallower lugs they probably aren't ideal in mud or snow. However, if you run (or hike) on rocky, technical terrain and if you want something that can keep your feet comfy on really long days then this is definitely your shoe. And yes, these would be phenomenal hiking shoes.
I have been looking for a shoe that is both protective and well cushioned and was pleased to find the Karacals. They check all the boxes I desired, plenty of room in the toe box, well cushioned, supportive and protective. Just did a 22 miler with 5000ft of climbing in the Goat Rocks Wilderness with wide mix of trail types, from very runnable to very technical scrambling and the Karacals performed extremely well. On the way down the nice toe box and cushioning shined. Did I mention they are pretty light too! I would definitely recommend if you are looking for one shoe that can do it all.
Other than a quick lacing system, I could not ask for more. Fits my foot perfectly an no slide at all when I run. Paradoxically, my foot also goes in and out easily when I unlace them. ***Sizing and fit info*** The MO for La Sportiva shoes in general is that they work great for a narrow foot. Especially a narrow heel and a narrow to average forefoot. If you have wide feet look at a different brand. La Sportiva shoes also tend to run small. These shoes slightly less so than others, but still. In most running shoes I get a size 12 (which are often slightly large). Sometimes and 11.5 will fit me perfectly in other shoe brands but not so often. In these shoes I ordered a EU46 and they fit me perfectly. ***So if you are unfamiliar with La Sportiva shoes and in other brands you have a size that fits you perfectly, you may need to go up a half size from what the standard conversion charts say.***
I read reviews and knew that these shoes tend to run small. I live in a remote place and figured I would roll the dice ordering them because of all the love the shoes get. Wore them around the house 5 times to test the fit before I took them on the trail. They were great on the uphill and the flats... but then came the downhill. Not a chance. I wear size 13 and typically have zero problems with sizing. Sometimes I even wear 12 in ski boots, skates, etc. The fact is that the Euro 47 is not close to a US 13. Oh well, I really wanted this shoe to work for me but there are no larger sizes. Aside from the sizing, I feel like these shoe would check all the boxes for me.
Despite the description, the Karacal runs narrower than the Akasha and the Jackal. It's a mystery to me how La Sportiva can make an entire line of running shoes that do not fit the same as their climbing and mountaineering lines. It's like the two parts of the company do not even talk to each other. If you fit La Sportiva climbing shoes or mountaineering boots, most of their running shoes will be too narrow for you.
