Trail running pack

This is a great trail running or short hike pack. Many pockets and two water bottles. It does fit a little odd on me. Maybe it’s just too big? One of the side straps scratches my chest as I walk. Otherwise it’s great

Fit chest: 23-32 inches in incorrect

The description says "Fits chest: S: 23-32 inches". I am 27 inches around the ribcage and this thing doesn't even come close to snugging (mind you I do have breast tissue that is not in that 27, so the functional circumference is actually greater than 27".). Fully snugged down with full water bottles onboard, it easily has a 1.5 inch gap off my chest (with empty water bottles it would be worse.). The lower strap DOES snug down to 27" but just BARELY, but definitely not to 23. At 27 it is hitting hard stops. But snugging the lower strap down like that makes the top deform out, which can't be snugged out. (If you have a 27+ inch chest circumference and are well endowed, this thing could be perfect for you. It is actually a really nice vest.)

Good but bottles leak, bad carrying poles

This is my second Ultimate Direction vest and I think it's good/average but there are a couple of design flaws that would make me choose something else. First the good. I'm a skinny runner (6', 140 lb) and this vest fits me very well. I did try it on in-store and would highly recommend that for everyone to avoid stuff bouncing around. Second is capacity. This size is great for ultramarathons and longer trail runs. I really like how easy it is to lash extra gear on the outside - that's come in handy for bulky outer layers that might be needed overnight on ultras. The ventilation is outstanding for a running vest. I wouldn't buy it again though. The biggest issue is how you carry poles. It's extremely uncomfortable and not something that's easy to use while in motion. I'd rather just carry them, which is annoying. Check out Salomon's pole quiver to see how it should be done. The second is that UD's bottles leak and you'll need to get aftermarket bottles. I thought the leak on my first UD vest might have been a fluke but they all leak and if you Google it you can see my experience isn't unique. That said, HydraPak 500ml bottles fit well and the flip tops are super convenient at aid stations so I'd probably have bought them anyway.

Warning: Annoyance Factor 10/10

I formulated this review whilst running 17 miles wearing this product.I run 150 to 200 miles on trails in the western states a month. For the last 5000 miles I have been running with a Talon 22 mountain bike hydration pack. Not 1 complaint.I see sponsored runners wearing these hydration packs with flasks on their chests and think man,I'm such a novice. So I buy this.It fits like I put on a 8 year old's jacket.I'm 6ft 190lbs and a vegetarian I don't lift weights.I have a 40 inch chest.Size chart says the large fits me.I call the company guy says they are aware they fit small and people have complained. Secondly, who out there enjoys a liter of water bouncing up and down 3 inches on your chest every time your foot strikes?Seriously is this better?I'm guessing you want this pack because its a pound lighter big deal.I had to ditch half the gear I carry because it wouldn't fit.Now why would you need a raincoat in your mountain pack or...food?.If you come on a run with me your going to die of exposure with the "Ulimate Direction mountain pack" because you can't bring anything with you. Naw you don't need lights. Ever hear of a chest heart rate sensor? why would you make a pack with two straps and one goes right across your heart rate sensor? What mountain is this for? If you buy one and your stuck on the Colorado Trail (mountain) don't worry if I see you I'll give you a sandwich make a fire and call for help on my phone all of witch you probably don't have with you due to limited space. If your aware the name "mountain" suggests you could take a rain shell, hoodie, phone, knife, food, water fire making accessories, light and emergency foil blanket on a 30 mile jaunt but can't and don't care that's fine however the fact the size chart is wrong and they know but don't do anything about it is a good reason alone to skip this product.Lest you waste your time buying it and returning it like me. Disappointingly,I wasted my 25% cupon on it when I should of bought something else. Thanks Ultimate Direction,I'll be sure to trust you in the future. PS. I have huge road rash patches from it and the top strap actually hit my throat going over obstacles plus I accidentally paused my running watch contorting my body trying to get a drink. All in 1 short run.
