Recommended by REI staff - replacing old 26" HardRock. Put on about 100 miles of clay single track, rolling hills with rock. A bit heavier than my old bike (which didn't have front shocks), but I climb hills more easily - must be the gearing. Fatter tires means great traction. The seat it came with was uncomfortable so I had to upgrade. Crossbar is rectangular tube and wider than I'm used to, which means I was hitting my knees on it while pedaling around corners. Made a wrap-around pad for it using foam pipe-insulation - that solved the problem.
I bought this bike on a bit of a whim after a 20 yr. hiatus from mountain biking. Make no mistake this is an entry level mountain bike, but I'd say it's at the upper end of entry level. I've ridden a few hundred miles of single track now and feel like I have a good understanding of the bike. The only significant upgrade I made is a dropper post - which can be routed through the frame, but it doesn't have a traditional exit port on the seat tube, so I opted to have REI install it (seems a bit cumbersome to do yourself given the weird cable routing required - my only real complaint from Salsa.) This thing handles extremely well - very nimble. It's a pretty good climber and I've been pleasantly surprised by it's ability for (relatively modest) descents. I haven't taken it to a legit downhill park (clearly not what it's intended for), but I hope to give that a try in the coming year. I really like the geometry, and the components are solid at this price point. Brakes have been flawless and drivetrain is nothing to write home about, but gets the job done. I've enjoyed the chunky 2.8" tires, but may try something a little thinner when these wear out. For a hardtail at this price point, I'm extremely happy (though I got mine on sale, too.)
