This thing is an on-bike cardio-fitness AI machine

I'm mightily impressed with the integration of HRV, Stress Score, Performance Condition, EPOC, and now, Stamina. Garmin and FirstBeat continue to lead the way on this stuff, and if we would just read and listen to our hearts, we might be able to stem the diabesity index and more over time.

Makes Navigating Self-Guided Adventures Easier

Being more of an adventure rider, I love the ability to build a route and pan and scan the map when you're unsure where the next turn is or if something blocks your way — like a washed-out road or private property. Beyond all of the expected quality features of a Garmin, having the solar to keep the battery topped up is a huge benefit for those back-to-back long days too.

Navigation does NOT work

I do a lot of long events - bikepacking races, randonnees etc. I bought this mainly for the navigation feature. All I need is basic mapping. I need the route to show up on the screen and I will navigate on my own. This functionality is defective. Whenever I try to navigate, the Garmin 1040 crashes and restarts. I get a message that says route calculation error then the unit restarts. Sometimes it gets caught in a loop where it shuts down, reboots, shuts down, reboots over and over again. It's totally whacked. I've contacted Garmin. They've admitted that there is probably an issue with the firmware, but there is no solution offered. This unit costs a fortune. It's totally unacceptable that the most basic function on a gps is not working. On the plus side, the battery life is great.

Great Features in General

I was lucky enough to get my hands on it as soon as it became available. The Edge 1040 is much faster (e.g., when calculating routes or finding POIs) than the 1030 Plus. The new user interface looks more modern and is more intuitive. Sometimes is freezing and I need to restarted.

Best Garmin Edge Yet!!!

I pulled the trigger and upgraded from the Garmin Edge 1033 Plus. I’m so happy I did! Was definitely worth upgrading. The light network and pairing is much more stable and improved - so is the connection to my phone. The screen layout is more logical and improved. I love the weekly outlook training plan and the bolder larger screen fonts for this middle-aged guy whose screen sight isn’t as great as my younger years is great. I also had to communicate with Garmin Help and they were extremely quick and helpful in addressing my issue. I’ve upgraded every Garmin Edge all the way back from the Edge 500 and will continue to so moving forward.

Migrated from Shimano E-Tube Ride on iPhone

It took a while to find the apps or whatever you call them to get the Edge 1040 Solar to have all the data and graphics of the iPhone running E-Tube that i've used for 3 years. I wanted to have the phone accessible for pics, texts, calls, etc. so bought the 1040... Wow initially very underwelmed by the Edge 1040 Solar. But after searching and installing various add-ons, i I now have the map and 6 windows of data. If I'd known it took 3rd party apps, and the map is still only about 50% as good as what's on e-tube iPhone app, i probably would have saved my money. But like i said, i wanted to have the iPhone separate, so it is what it is.

Worth upgrading for impressive performance

Upgraded from a 530. Loading courses and navigating is super duper fast. I really enjoy the larger size and I wasn't originally a fan of touchscreens but this is responsive and doesn't jump around in inclement weather. Very easy to use while focusing on traffic and road conditions. Battery life seems to be forever. I'm excited to try this on multidsy touring. I have been struggling to get to the home screen during a ride and the pausing navigation sometimes doesn't work but Garmin has been working through bugs. One last thought - the speaker is really loud to the point where I just disable it on those early morning neighborhood rides.

My favorite bike computer

This is my favorite computer to use. I really like that every most every field is customizable, on rides you get warnings about upcoming hazards like sharp turns in the road, and having the solar screen to help the battery to last a little longer is a nice addition. The big screen is great when using the map screen. It would be nice if the integration between the Garmin computer and the Garmin Connect app was better. The computer has the ability to have different profiles for your different bikes, but when importing to the app, the gear specific to each profile is not updated and the user has to change it manually if it isn't part of the default profile.

The Edge 1040 solar has a very slick interface. Love the touchscreen to swipe through the different screens while riding. Tons of information at your fingertips. I disabled the message notifications while riding as it tended to interrupt the ride, but if you need to be tethered to work I can see it has being helpful. Integration with my components is flawless. I have SRAM AXS shifting with a crank based power meter, I can see what gear I'm in, the battery levels for the shifting and all the metrics from the power meter. Really nothing else out there can compare. Having it charge while on a sunny ride is just a bonus.
