I tried on multiple Ultimate Direction vests, and the front pockets are TINY on both. I'm not sure what would fit in there other than a couple of gels, and they're so small they might fall out. On this vest, the bottom front strap is much longer than the top one due to the vest's shape, which creates weird pressure across the ribcage. Too many dangling cords and straps as well. On the plus side, the rear has a lot of space, including internal routing for a bladder. It's pretty light and was comfortable to try on. But the size of the front pockets (including the zippered pocket) was a dealbreaker. 5'11" 190 lb, athletic/fit
I was looking for a running vest that 1) had options for storing trekking poles; 2) could store a decent amount of stuff for an upcoming ultra I'm running in; 3) maintained breathability in the midst of the added storage; and 4) was versatile and adaptable to continue to fit well when loaded heavy or loaded light. I have not had this vest long, but so far I am LOVING it. It breathes well, it holds a decent amount of food/gear and distributes the weight really well, it is super adjustable, and it fits really well and snug without constricting my breathing. It also has a lot of pockets front and back. I am so glad I got this pack!
This is a great running vest that’s super light and very functional with lots of storage capacity. The 10+ pockets help keep all the essentials like fuel, keys, snacks, etc separate. This is a unisex vest so if you’re a smaller woman, the smallest size is too big. For reference I’m 5’2” and 120 lbs. Completely cinched up, I found the vest still shifted around quite a bit during the run. REI’s great return policy allowed me to return this vest for the women’s version which fit like a glove but was not available at the store and had to be ordered online.
