The perfect day pack

This CamelBak M.U.L.E. Commute 22 is amazing for any day trips you might make. The hydration bladder is an additional cost, but for me, cleaning those bladders makes the water bottle holders on the side of the pack much more hydration friendly. The outside, open pocket is ideal for easy stowage, and the inside, water tight, laptop sleeve would be phenomenal for inclement weather commutes. I love that the waist strap is removable, I have never thought that smaller day bags need them, and the air support pads that fit against my back definitely were effective in keeping the sweat from soaking both my back and the bag on these warm day trips. I highly recommend this bag if you are in the market for a work, school or day adventure pack.

Useful pack for hands free option

I would use this pack if one does not want to carry panniers and needs to have their hands free to navigate different situations. Or has light load to pack. I used the pack 5 days a week for distances of 4 to 11 miles trips one way in an urban environment. Depending on the amount of items, I would have "light" or "heavy" packs. When the pack was light ( lunch, laptop, and shirt) I did not notice it on my back. However, when the pack was full (lunch, dinner, 2 books, laptop) I felt the weight on my shoulders and back. The pack is designed to sit upright on the ground because of the flat bottom design. There are two exterior compartments for bottles or other items on the sides. Furthermore, there is an open pouch where a placed my u-lock. A slot for light is a useful design. There are two meshed small storage pouches on the shoulder straps. I was able to fit my a smartphone without the case though. In rain or snow, the pouches on the shoulder-straps are not rain resistant/proof. The design and the back of the pack does offer comfort and room for air to circulate to minimize sweating. Lastly, there is a small weatherproof zippered pocket on top of the pack where one can store keys, glasses, or smart phone in a case. The interior is designed with a separate weather proof pouch to fit a laptop. A meshed interior pocket also can store:keys, smartphone in case, and wallet. The flat bottom designed allowed me to stack meal containers and books. This design also allowed me to place the backpack on the ground and manage my items in it more effectively. I did not utilize a water pack, although it is designed to hold one as well. One of the chest-straps come off the shoulder-strap after three weeks of use. I will try to put it back on. Due to lack of rain, I do not know the effectiveness of the exterior material to keep my items dry. Although, with interior pouch that has a closed/velcro top, I believe my laptop would be safe.

Great Camelbak pack, with a few MINOR drawbacks.

I’m normally a fan of Camelbak products and have owned several over the years. This particular pack still nails the Camelbak build quality and has a sleek “professional” vibe to it, but the functionality leaves a bit to be desired. First, what I LIKE: Overall, the pack is sturdy and well made. The straps are comfortable and the “yoke” cut is far better than unshaped straps. The vertically adjustable sternum clip is a welcome addition to keep them cinched tight and right where they should be. I like that there's a removable hip belt, which is great if you are carrying a bit heavier payload and want them to alleviate shoulder strain. There’s plenty of space for stuff. I packed all my work clothing and a pair of shoes along with my burrito, banana and a 32 oz. Nalgene water bottle with room to spare for a Chromebook or tablet. There's also a padded and microfiber-lined pocket for a phone, or glasses or other fragile item and a nice see-through mesh pocket inside for more organization. I also like the light colored interior. A REALLY nice change from dark linings. Way easier to see the dark colored mouse or other peripheral that fell to the bottom of the bag. It easily schlepped all my stuff on my 9 mile commute. The stuff-it pocket on the back is solid and easy to access for raingear, etc. This gets a bonus star since the sides are closed. Items can’t slip out which is a really nice perk! Be aware that the same closed sided pocket, although convenient, is open to rain or the errant coffee splashed on it during your train commute and the closed pocket design means the liquid stays in there. The yin and the yang of pockets, amiright? A drain hole would have been welcome. Just a note to keep in mind. The outer material IS water resistant and the laptop sleeve seems almost water proof. If you think you may get stuck in heavy rain, I’d recommend a poncho to cover everything or maybe a rain cover for the pack. A nice feature here would be like my old Vaude bike pack that had a reflective, bright colored stowable rain cover in the bottom that was actually connected to the pack. (hint, hint) The "air suspension system" works well. It IS comfortable, but will get hot eventually if you wear it long enough. Still not as bad as other more "traditional" packs. NOW, what I DON’T LIKE: The stuff-it pocket uses elastic, which is fine, but it WILL stretch over time. It may be better to have cinch straps or something to hold it without threat of stretching out. No dedicated spot for the water bladder? Ok, granted, I’m on my bike and I PROBABLY have a bottle. However, the pack has a loop to hang the bladder, an access point for the tube to pass through the top and a retention elastic for the mouthpiece on either shoulder strap. However, you either have to put it in the laptop sleeve which, with its roll top, won’t close or if you actually have electronics in there, the bladder will lay on your laptop or tablet (even though it IS on top of that same waterproof(?) roll top sleeve). Either way, I’d prefer to have a bladder area on my back with a vapor barrier between it and the laptop sleeve. Anything to split it up. Also, the current location option for a bladder means its taking up a liter or two of that 22 liter capacity. NOTE: if you decide to hang it in the laptop sleeve, any water that gets in there takes FOREVER to dry out. It isn't Gore-Tex or some other SPM (well, I don't think so anyway), and that water resistance works both ways. The side stretch pockets are deep, but won't fit a 32 oz Nalgene-style bottle's diameter. Regular bike bottles or tall bottles fit fine. For the craft beer fans, yes, with a bit of finagling a crowler will fit. Ok, on second thought, maybe it isn't a negative just something to keep in mind. On laptops, my wife's Chromebook fit in the sleeve fine, so did the iPad but my Alienware m15 definitely did not. A MacBook or smaller PC would be best. The admin pockets on the front of the straps DEFINITELY don’t hold a phone. Maybe by design? Mine were stuffed with an ID card, a power bar and a bike tool. They hold well and are expandable, but yeah, no way my Galaxy S20+, my wife’s iPhone or a tricorder was going in there. Commlink, sure, but no tricorder. The helmet stow tabs on the back were a bit small for my Giro's straps. They fit, but you can forget just popping the helmet off if you’re in a hurry because you're running from mutants or something. I ended up running the strap through the pack handle and adding a carabiner to help secure it so it wasn’t swinging around like a foam filled wrecking ball. All that being said, the pack is definitely usable and will find a place in my line-up but my old Vaude is still at the top of my list (for now) but we’ll see how it goes. I DID receive this free as an REI Product Advisor in exchange for an honest review. I never put much stock in these reviews so I’ll do my best to give some real-world insight. Hopefully it helps!

Solid compact backpack, less perfect than others

I received this pack through REI Advisors, hoping that it would replace my aging commute bag. Off the bat, this bag is well constructed, thoughtfully designed, and comfortable to wear while cycling or walking around, even when loaded with gear. I didn't get a chance to test it in the rain, but the water resistant zip closures are robust and feel up to the task. Surprisingly for Camelbak, there is no separate pocket for an internal water reservoir, nor did I find a tube pass-through. The very spacious side pockets could easily handle even extra-large 48-oz bottles, which is far more than I would need for my normal downtown commute. One drawback: the padded laptop pouch was a little too small for my (admittedly very large) 17" workstation laptop. It would fit OK, but extended out the top just enough to make the roll-over hook-and-loop closure difficult to secure. If you're hauling a larger computer, you may wish to find a taller bag.

Does what it says!

This is almost a perfect backpack for cycle commutes! I was a bit skeptical at first based on the stated volume, but find that's it's more than enough to carry my laptop, IFAK, a change of clothes, and the normal incidentals (thermos, water bottle, rain jacket, notebook, etc.) for my day to day trip. The design is understated and really well thought out - the reflective details are functional more than they are ornamental, the pack sits right, doesn't obstruct range of motion while wearing a helmet, and carries the weight nicely. The pack has just the right amount of pockets - I normally carry a rolled up rain jacket in one mesh side-pocket, and a u-lock in the other (or a water bottle if I'm on foot). The whole pack is water resistant enough for a drizzle, but full waterproofing and a more robust waist strap would make this a 5/5.

Everyday go to pack and more.

It may be listed as a bike pack, put it is actually a great all-around pack with features that make it my everyday pack. Pockets for both hot coffee and water. I don't like or use a h2O water blatter hydro system. The command center is great, I can actually adjust the volume on my phone through the thin mesh. Its plenty big enough to carry all I need and the large outside pocket really increases the amount of stuff you can carry. Also, the flat bottom allows the pack to stand alone and not fall over, which is a plus for me. Water resistant material is a bonus.

Perfect bike commuter bike

Things I love about this bag: perfect size to carry lunch, change of clothes, lock & flipflops; little pockets in straps, so I can keep my building ID in there and not have to take off backpack to get into building; reflective details; little loop for a flashing light. Also love the loops on the front near the zipper ends--I put carabiners through them and hook my helmet straps through them when I take my bike on the train, or hang extra lights off them for pre-dawn rides.
