- Stack Stack is the vertical distance from the center of the cranks to the center of the head tube, measured to the top of the head tube.
- Effective Top Tube Effective top tube is the distance from the center of the head tube to the center of the seat tube/seat post, measured parallel to the ground.
- Seat Tube Center to Top Seat Tube length is the measurement of the seat tube, from the center of the cranks to the top of the seat tube.
- Head Tube Length Head Tube Length is measured from the bottom to the top of the head tube.
- Head Tube Angle Head Tube Angle is the acute angle between the head tube and the ground (measured towards the rear of the bike)
- Seat Tube Angle Seat Tube Angle is the acute angle between the seat tube and the ground (measured towards the rear of the bike).
- Bottom Bracket Height Bottom Bracket Height is a measurement taken vertically from the ground up to the center of the cranks.
- Wheelbase Wheelbase is the measurement from the center of the front axle to the center of the rear axle.

My 4th Salsa! Love this bike!!
Purchase this as a retirement gift for myself. I've ridden a Salsa Vaya for years, and I really like it. The Cutthroat has a smoother ride and feels much more compliant on the local gravel terrain. Handles single track well too. I don't notice any issues with sufficient low end gearing, but I haven't loaded it up for bike packing yet. I do like that the 2x has a higher top end. My wife now wants me to upgrade her Cutthroat to a 2x. She's running the SRAM Apex 1. She spins out too quickly on the pavement sections of our rides.
Gearing adequate for Adventure and Bikepacking
Out of the box, the gearing is substantially lower than 1:1. If this is not adequate, an 11-36T (sram) cassette will work fine (in my own experience), and if still lower gearing is desired, this can be had with a $20 Wolftooth road link. The Shimano GRX brakes are far superior to the sram alternative as well. This is a perfectly good gearing choice, which we have on 3 of our bikes. It has never let us down.
Gearing Inadequate for Adventure and Bikepacking
I was able to test ride this Salsa Cutthroat GRX 810 on a mixed surface route with extended climbs including 12-14% grades. The Cutthroat frame and wheels were great and handled the toughest gravel sections adroitly. However the GRX 810 2x gears just aren't low enough for steep gravel climbs, particularly if loaded for bikepacking or extended adventure rides. I've ridden the same GRX-810 gearset on a Salsa Warbird and it's perfect for a fast, light gravel racing machine. But on the Cutthroat it just isn't low enough, and you don't have the usual 1x option of swapping a smaller front chainring for rugged adventure riding. Salsa does make the Cutthroat with the SRAM Eagle 1x gearset and low-range gearing, but REI apparently doesn't stock them (see Q&A answers below). That's too bad because the Cutthroat's do-anything frame and rugged wheels just cry out for better and lower gearing. BTW, REI's picture gallery for this bike includes two photos of the Cutthroat in it's rugged gravel element. But look closely and it's SRAM Eagle's wide range gears, not this GRX 810 version.
