Solid Lightweight Hiker

The Salomon Predict Hike Mid GTX boots are a great lightweight hiking boot. I've used them for several weeks of day hiking on dirt paths and rocky trails in dry, rainy, and snowy conditions. These performed really well in wet conditions - my feet stayed dry and I had plenty of grip on wet and icy surfaces. I normally wear a size 10.5, and the length of these shoes fit perfectly. The width of the shoes felt narrow, and I did develop some hot spots and discomfort on the outer edges of my feet when wearing them for an extended period of time. I don't normally consider myself to have wide feet, so I would consider these boots to run narrow. The build quality of the shoes is really nice. The materials are extremely lightweight, flexible, and supportive where it matters. The material is completely waterproof, but not hot or sweaty. The insoles are comfortable, and the tread on the bottom is grippy. The laces did require double knots in order to stay tied, and I felt that the very top lace was slightly too high to be effective (it often slipped over the tongue of the shoe). My reason for 4/5 stars comes down to the narrowness and the difficulty with the laces. All around, these are a good hiking boot if you're looking for lightweight, narrow, and waterproof. I would recommend these to others if they're in need of these criteria, but probably wouldn't get them again for myself unless I could find a wider version.

I was pretty excited to try out these hiking shoes from Salomon. The Black/Aqua Gray/Royal Lilac reminded me of a throwback to the early 90s matching outfits that I had when I was younger. The overall shoe was pretty stiff even after breaking it in and it felt more like a tennis/basketball shoe than a technical shoe. The sizing was fairly spot on although the toe box was a bit longer and ever slightly narrower than my preference. The ankle and overall support was pretty good though the slippery lacing made it a bit of a nuisance to tie down. I would have preferred more feedback when go over more rocky terrain which I don't think the stiff sole helped with that. The loopy-loop in the back was needed to slip into the shoe easily. Overall, the shoes were average in terms of what I would be looking for in terms of a technical hiking shoe. Minor technicalities aside, this was a very comfortable and I'm sure those looking for plush cushioning for long hikes would appreciate these.

Great Cross between hiking boot/running shoe

Finally got some rain in the PNW so I got to test the gore-Tex out! Boot stayed dry through the whole hike and the collar lining kept my toes toasty in low 50s rainy weather. I appreciate the ankle padding and the lightweight feel of the boot. It was very comfortable with almost no break in required. It really feels like a running shoe crossed with a hiking boot. Nice grips with the contragrip sole. Only downside is very narrow forefoot.

Lightweight & mix terrain boot

My initial impression when holding the shoe box was striking. Did they send me an empty box? Is a boot missing? Something had to be wrong, the box felt empty! When I opened and realized the boots were there, I laughed out loud. I can safely say these might be the lightest mid-rise hiking boot I have ever owned. The first few times wearing these boots, the area around the ankle felt stiff and I was initially concerned about rubbing as I was wearing low socks on both occasions (poor planning on my part!) However, the first was a simple 2 km walk, and the second was about 3 km on the trail neighboring my house. Both times, the boot felt very solid though didn't soften up quickly. Even with that stiffness retained, I didn't experience any rubbing around the ankle. We then did a much longer hike on much more textured terrain (tree roots, rocks, crossing a few streams) over a weekend trip. That is where the true test happened. Positive notes: 1. The fit is spot on for me. What I loved was both the ample room in the toe box (my right foot big toe tends to rub on most shoes) and a very rigid connection between the heel and metatarsals. This made the boot feel very stout on tougher terrain without shifting or sliding. I felt like a mountain goat in these! 2. The incredibly light weight means less fatigue and greater range of motion. I didn't notice the weight impact on the short hikes but I definitely felt the effect when the miles started to accumulate. 3. The grip felt very nice. I purposefully tried to stomp around in the creek crossings to test the waterproofness and grip. My feet stayed dry and there was no slipping. Downsides: 1. These boots do run really hot, but that is somewhat expected from a GTX boot. I'd prefer a hot foot over a wet foot any day. 2. It might be the break-in period, but initially the boots became untied a lot in the beginning. I did notice that a double knot and more break-in time alleviated this. Notes to designers: 1. The only design issue I noticed was the placement of the boot strap on the back. Due to the low connection point, it's hard to get leverage to pull the boot on and get your heel to drop into the opening for your foot. I thought maybe it would get better over time, but I feel that as the back of the ankle breaks in, I'm more likely to push that part down with my heel and it will only make getting the boot on harder.

Non-technical hiker

These hikers are everything that Salomon markets them as: high cushion hikers for non-technical hikes. These shoes excelled in high mileage days on hardpack and scree. The mid height helped keep out small pebbles and dirt/sand. Scrambling in them leaves something to be desired - they feel vague on rock slabs and can feel un-balanced when going through talus fields. Sizing is about right on point - but the forefoot is slightly narrow and the arch isn't as supportive as I'd like (but I have high arches). The pull loop on the back is barely large enough to fit a finger though and the laces don't hold a knot very well (easily fixable by just double knotting). I would recommend these boots for long, non-technical hikes (<Class 2).

Solid 3 Season Boot

The Predict boot is an all-around solid shoe and will serve you well on various types of terrain. Great support and traction, plus waterproof without too much weight. Handled long single-day hikes plus moderate scrambling without issues. Only issue is that I found the factory insole to be quite uncomfortable, but easily replaced in minutes with standard third party options

Great on the street, too soft for rough trails

I've had these shoes for awhile, but only began using them recently. After a month or so of wearing them I have the following observations. 1. Virtually no break-in period 2. Very comfortable for walking on a road 3. A bit too flexible for my taste for hiking on a rough trail. 4. The tongue is just weird. The gusset does not go very far up along the tongue. Consequently, although this is a gortex shoe, you don't want to get into much water because of the tongue.

Not As Durable As I Hoped

I expect my hiking boots to handle a lot of use and last a long time. Very early on, the light grey toe box started showing stains at the seams and then I noticed my feet would be wet on some hikes after stepping in puddles. After very little use the seams on the goretex lining had already begun to separate allowing water to get in. I think the seam placement was poorly chosen and these boots could’ve been built better.

Weird fit, terrible shoe laces: Form over function

Other reviewers were not kidding - the laces on these make the boots useless. You cannot go 2 minutes without needing to stop and retying the laces. Toebox is quite narrow and needed to buy 1/2 size up. Not terribly comfortable or a pain to wear. A very middle of the road hiking booth that is made useless by its lace design.

Outstanding Lightweight Gore-Tex Mid-Hiking Boot.

I'm a huge fan of the Salomon brand of hiking and running shoes. I wear them for work (professional caddie), playing golf, and for daily activities. When I looked for a lightweight but mid-height hiking shoe for an upcoming Alpine region tour in Europe next year, these "Predict GTX" hiking boots looked like a good choice. I was wrong...they are a GREAT choice! I've worn them three times, totalling about 20 miles, and couldn't be more pleased with their comfort and performance. Previous mid-height hiking boots have rubbed my ankles raw, but these boots are very supportive without any discomfort. The tread provides good traction on both pavement and dirt trails, yet isn't so aggressive that I couldn't wear them for winter caddie loops. The boots are breathable, yet appear to be pretty waterproof. (I haven't worn them in a heavy downpour, but have walked through a couple of deep puddles, with no problem.) I like their light weight, which will make packing them easy. Finally, as a Univ. of Washington Alum, I dig the purple collar and tongue! Go DAWGS!
