Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

I bought the grey version of these, hoping to wear them both at work and on the trail. They were really cute at first, but then I learned that suede gets dirty easily when outside and is difficult to clean. Also, the fabric part of the shoe has started developing a hole on top, where the shoe bends when you walk. I have attached photos. I have worn these daily at work for about 4 months, and outside just a few times. I am not really sure what these are intended for. If only for work, then the rugged sole is not needed. If also for outside, suede is not a good idea. Also, I like a wide toe box, but these are a tad too wide for me. Though cute, I would not buy again.
These are just as comfortable as other Altra's I've owned and I like the more casual look versus a sneaker look. However, these are not great for hiking or being outside if you encounter any kind of moisture (dewy grass, rain, stream crossings, etc.). The shoe gets saturated very quickly and you end up with wet feet almost immediately. I even tried using a Nikwax waterproofing product on them and it did not help. Plus, they don't have the gaiter traps like other Altras do. I like the shoe but I no longer take them camping or hiking. Please Altra- make a durable, waterproof hiking shoe with compatible hiking gaiters!
I purchased these shoes for a recent trip to Scotland. I have a bunion on my left foot so the wide toe box made them very comfortable. The arch was just right, not too high or low. I was a little worried about the lower heel but it wasn’t a problem. I walked over 85 miles in 2 weeks (11 miles one day) and my feet never got sore. The upper is a canvaslike material that hopefully will last longer than my shoes with nylon webbing. They are kind of expensive but it was worth it not to have any foot issues on my trip.
I love these shoes! they are so roomy and comfortable, I wear them all day at work, and every day otherwise. I both both colors, and bought a "3rd" extra pair because I was afraid they would discontinue them or run out before I needed another pair. I love the zero drop, I feel is has made difference in my overall comfort. But more then that, the roomy toe box has made such a huge difference! I wish I never had my bunion surgery! if only I had discovered these shoes before I made that decision. I stand on my feet a min of 8 hours for work, and sure-my legs and feet are tired, but no more pain! Toes are not meant to be scrunched inside shoes! Or walk all day in a heel! My only wish? that we had the cool colors the mens version does. I am not a pink, coral kinda girl. Why no green?!!! I am always buying mens items when I can, they have a much better color selection. Jackets, etc. Come on REI! Pick better colors for us women! we are not all pink bubble gum kind of women!
I'd prefer to give it 4.5 stars for lack of color choices, but decided to star-up for comfort, durability, and functionality. I'm definitely buying additional pairs and LOVE the original fit. I wish there were more styles to choose from in original fit. I've had these shoes for over a year, hike, walk, and run errands in these shoes while they look in great condition (I don't make it a habit of jumping through mud puddles though). They were recommended to me by my daughters, I've recommended to other family and friends as well. Keep up the good work...and just add a few fun colors to this style while also maintaining these traditional colors.
These might be the perfect hikers for people with wide feet. They are very comfortable and supportive yet too wide for my medium width feet. At first I thought that I must have been sent a wide width by mistake (nope). I recently bought the lone peak 5 and feel that the Insoles in the LP Alpine have more spring in them and the soles are slightly firmer (which I liked). Unfortunately I will be sending them back as there is no way for me to keep my foot secure without pulling the laces tight and scrunching-up the top fabric. The length is ample and comparable to the lone peaks.
I bought my first pair July '23 for a trip to Japan. We logged 20k steps everyday on concrete and I never had any fatigue. They became my daily shoes after that. Now 12 months later I replaced them.
Depending on the style, I wear size 8.5 or 9 in Altra shoes. The 8.5 in this style fit. I have a very wide forefoot and narrow mid foot and heel.... Yep, like a duck! I marked the width as being true to size, but most people would find it too wide. I can lace it tighter, yet still have room for my toes, neuroma and bunions... oh, what a relief!!! The only thing I would do different would be to add an arch support, as these have none. I can deal with no arch support as long as I don't have the burning pain from neuromas being pinched too tight. I wish Altra would branch out into dress street shoes as athletic shoes aren't always appropriate.
Firstly, I have wide feet so it’s difficult to find shoes that are comfortable to wear. These shoes are amazing! The way they lace up and the material of the shoe allows you to really customize how wide or how narrow you want your shoe to be. I’m buying another pair for when my current ones kick the bucket, that’s how much I value being able to customize the way the shoe fits! They’ve been great on slippery surfaces (haven’t slipped yet!). I wear them primarily at work on my feet for 8-10 hours a day and theyve held up great. I’ve been wearing daily for about 4 months now, and they are just now starting to show wear and tear. I would definitely recommend these to anyone, but particularly if you have wide feet because they’re so customizable!
I was looking for a shoe to wear every day that would allow me to take a hike at the spur of the moment. Love the look of these shoes with the throw back toe shape from the 70's earth shoe. Plenty of room in the toes to wiggle, feels comfortable around the ankle and heel. BUT after wearing them in house an hour I found my heel position to be lower than the ball. I think they advertise this but have never tried it. Made my knees uncomfortable and dont want to risk any pain inthe knees while my body adjusts. They simply dont feel like a stabalizing shoe. Maybe if I were younger it'd be no problem. Also, due to the room in the toe I definitely would not hike in these.
