I'm not entirely certain the target audience for this product. The drink is fun and the bitters/juice/syrup make a nice cocktail (I had the Moscow mule). And since everything tastes better deep in the backcountry, I imagine this would be a fun surprise for your backpacking partner(s). That said: Backpacking: The kit weighs 5.4oz but you will also need 2 vodka shooters (6+ oz.), and 6-12 oz. of ginger beer (or even a 12oz. Sprite can would work in the backcountry). So for 3 drinks you're looking at about 24oz. in your pack. You can minimalize the bins contents by removing the tin, skewers, coaster, and paper directions and save 2.5oz. If you just want to bring mix for one drink, you can get ingredients from the bin down to 1.2oz. But at this point, I'm drinking alone in the backcountry. What has happened to my life? For the price, maybe not worth the effort. If you really want to impress your companions in the backcountry, you can probably do it for cheaper. Car Camping: you can bring the ice, vodka, soda without worrying about the weight. But you could also bring more ingredients for cheaper that you purchase at your local grocery store. Plane traveling: would still need to purchase the soda/ginger beer when you land. Maybe better than going out to a bar? Maybe you have flown into a place without bars? If so, see thoughts on backpacking, above. In all, a cute little novelty, but not that practical in most cases. Worth buying once for a fun backcountry surprise or a gift for a backpacking friend.

Nonfunctional Gimmick

I don't think I've ever had to work so hard to make a bad Gin & Tonic. For starters, the front of the box says "Just Add Gin." So I was intrigued and gave it a whirl at my kitchen counter. First thing I notice in the instructions is that the recipe calls for soda water and an optional garnish, okay, so not just gin. So after pouring in the gin you then break open these squeeze packets, one of which exited quite abruptly spraying the drink out of the glass all over the counter. The next step, is to add soda water, and at this point, if you need to bring soda water, why not just bring tonic water to begin with since they're the same weight? The overall drink was really bad. I'm not sure who this is marketed to, It creates way too much waste and is too finicky and heavy for backpacking, and if you're car camping this is probably the worst Gin & Tonic you could waste your time making. The only reason for 2 stars is the nifty bitters and stirring spoon add a nice touch.

fun idea, less fun in practice

I tried out the Old Fashioned cocktail box and was pleased with the clever packaging and the concept. This included sugar cubes and 3 different bottles of bitters, along with some hardware like a multipurpose spoon/muddler and some picks for securing garnishes. It's charming, and it could make a fun gift. There are some major flaws, though. One thing that was probably a fluke is the fact that my main bitters jar had leaked, even though the seal wasn't broken. Ironically, it was still really hard to get dashes of bitters to come out of the small jars, even though the opening was clear (verified with a pick). Maybe it was an altitude thing (I'm at 4700') but I've never experienced this with normal sized bitters containers that I have here. The sugar cubes easily crumbled when I tried to pick them up, so that just added to the comedy. In the end, I made a couple of fine drinks. I guess the caveat is that with this portable kit, you still have to supply ice and whatever garnish, so it's not so much of a complete package as it might seem. So, while it's fun and the ingredients are good, I don't see how this kit saves me a great deal of effort. I think I'd rather just have better containers that I could pre-fill on my own. Or, maybe I'll just stick to my flask and drink my whiskey neat on the trail. This didn't sway me.

Backpacking treat

I tried out the old fashioned box and it’s a pretty cute little set up. It comes with 3 types of bitters, 6 sugar cubes, and some bits and bobs. The bitters are excellent and paired with some Bullet bourbon, they made for a very nice cocktail. The tiny muddler was a tad ineffective because my mug was too tall for the task, but I made it work. I think the biggest downside is that this kit doesn’t come with alcohol, which isn’t a huge problem but requires a bit of foresight before taking the box on an adventure. I would recommend this kit as either a cute gift or as a way to one up your friends on a particularly grueling backpacking excursion. I wouldn’t recommend this for glamping/car-camping because it’s a lot of waste for not a lot of beverage.

Love the practicality

We were excited to try the margarita cocktail box. It is super compact and has everything you need to mix a cocktail on the go (except for the alcohol and a glass). Easy to make with the help of the packets that come inside and the small spoon to stir. Our only complaint was that the taste was a little off. I prefer my margaritas a little sweeter. Other than that, it would be the perfect kit to take with you on a hike or other adventure where you need to pack light.

Fun novelty, maybe not the best for camping

My biggest complaint is that the cover of the box clearly states: "Make cocktails anywhere, just add Gin", but when you start making the cocktails, the directions say you will need not only Gin, but also soda and possibly ice cubes. I received this for free and tried at home, so I was able to find some carbonated water to use as soda water. If I was camping and had only read the outside of the box, it is unlikely I would have had soda water and would have had to settle for a flat Gin & Tonic, which is not my thing. The lime juice has good flavor and the bitters are nice, but I did have issues with the little bottles. The dropper holes on the bitters bottles are too small, even when I tried to open it up with one of the cocktail picks provided in the kit. I had to eventually just take the little dropper cap off the bitters bottle in order to get any out into my drink. The packaging for the lime juice and Tonic syrup rupture easily, I accidentally cracked open the lime juice packet when I was opening and unpacking the little box. These seem like fun novelty gifts, but I would not really be pleased to take this camping or backpacking and rely on the idea that you only need to add the Gin. Given the cost, I will probably stick with picking up a bottle of spirits and a mixer if I desire cocktails while camping. This seems best for trips in hotel rooms or other settings where you will have access to ice, glasses, soda water, a garnish, and a table to place the glass on the little linen coaster provided in the kit.

Nice presentation - not so practical

I got the Gin and Tonic kit and my first impression was it was cute and would make for a fun, novelty gift, but I wouldn't want to use it for the intended purpose they are marketing it for, which is for camping backpacking. The biggest reason being is you still need to add your own soda water. So if I am going to carry soda water, then why not just bring a can of tonic and make a better gin and tonic than this kit makes? Coming from a tin box, the flavor wasn't terrible, but isn't the same as a regular G&T. Overall, isn't something I would buy again for myself, but would likely pick up to throw into a gift basket or something along those lines.

Great for Adventures

Decent little drink kit. I tried the margarita version which came with the supplies for 3 drinks - margarita syrup, lime juice, orange bitters as well as a linen coaster, swizzle stick and garnish pick. Alcohol not included. I picked up some mini bottles of silver tequila to made the beverages. Personally, I felt the flavor was a bit off - the organge and lime didn't blend well. I added and additional 2-3 oz of lime sparkling water and that was much more palatable. I added grapefruit sparkling water to a seperate drink to try to get a little paloma action and that was pretty good too. Super portable and I love that everything comes it a little tin. Great for hiking, backpacking, camping or even just mixing up something different at home. While the margarita was as good as I'd hoped, there are some other flavors I'd love to try.

So Much More Than Expected!

When I cracked this open, I thought it was just going to be a packet or two of a premade mix, and that was that. I was so wrong! First, the snap and squeeze tonic mix packs are ingenious, easy, and clean. Next, the little bitters jars are so cute, and I love that included are two flavor options. Last but not least are the durable metal garnish skewers, mini mixer spoon, and cloth coaster - what an excellent and unexpected addition that I can use repeatedly. Truly impressed that all of this came in the kit. It was easy to use, delicious, packed up nicely, and is ready to pack and bring on my next adventure!
