Great Touch screen and Large Display

All in all its a great GPS, large screen for my old eyes. Only draw back for me is you cant just throw some AA batteries in on the trail. I understand you can spend much more cash on a new battery pack and swop it out, but thats my only complaint at this time. The touch screen is great very close to my cell phone sensitivity. Go ahead and spring for it. Its a good unit, tad heavy but thats noy an issue for me.

Does not work in cold
ColdWeatherExplorer

I bought this unit to make sure I have communication in emergencies. Live in Northern Labrador, often go off on snowmobile by myself. Have this unit mounted to my sled via the powered amps mount wired directly to the battery. If you plan on using this in the cold, reconsider. When temps reach -20C or below, the unit shuts down completely. I have used other garmin gps's with a warm temperature rating than the 700i in temps of -40C and colder without any issues. Garmin tells me I'm using it outside the temperature range and offers no solutions. If you are planning to use this in cold for emergency communications through inreach, there are better options that won't leave you stranded. Navigating in white out conditions in winter, and relying on this unit to display previously recorded tracks of how to get home will leave you without navigation. It may get you where you are going, but it cannot be relied upon to get you home if weather turns ugly when it's cold.

Much better screen than 600 series

Beautiful screen. New operating system is faster, but terms are changed from older Garmins. Tracks are now Activities. Also, I live next to Nevada/California boundary. To get the details I wanted, I bought the Garmin Hunt maps for Nevada and Northern California. When I am crossing the boundary, I need to change the map chips. This is a real inconvenience in the field. I wish Garmin offered some way to combine the data into a seamless map. In Base Camp, you only get the detailed map if the 700 is connected. If you have not used Base Camp before, you get a lot of information. For instance, the attached elevation plot shows my path over the Virginia Range as the first peak and my return as the second peak.

User UNfriendly device

Solidly made with many features that could be useful, but very frustrating to learn how to use. I feel like I'm a fairly tech-savvy person but this device makes me want to lose my religion. It would have to be re-paired to my phone constantly (although my phone showed bluetooth to be connected to the Garmin), I had difficulty sending maps from the app that Garmin forces me to use and difficulty with the battery life, although I tried to tweak it to save the battery. Returning for a simpler version that also has SOS feature and going to go back to using my phone for navigation. AllTrails is so much easier, but of course it's not compatible with this Garmin.

waste of money, good but not for 700$

Bought this unit, REI does not offer extended warranty for it, Not sure If You can get a spare battery for it from Garmin Site. You cant search a destination on this unit. Cumbersome software. I have the same sort of software interface on my Truck GPS and not very in favor of it. I am returning this unit and Instead I'll buy a spare Smart phone (for half price or less of this unit) with Long battery life and just use it for my navigation needs. I don't like using my main phone for navigation on long days of adventure out in the middle of nowhere, You wont need sim card or data plan for navigation on a spare smart phone.

Valuable upgrade to the Montana 600 series

The touchscreen on my old Garmin Montana 650t, purchased in 2011, was beginning to fail. My satellite phone rates were going up so as to be impractical. I could buy a new Montana 650t, or get the newest generation unit, the Montana 700 series. I couldn't face the thought of using the glacially slow UI of the 2011 machine, so I got the Montana 700i. Everything about using the 700i is better and faster than the 600 series, except one thing: The backlight of the display cannot get very bright. I measured it to be about 1.5 stops dimmer than the 10-year-old Montana 650t, which means if you are using it on the dashboard of a vehicle during the day, it is difficult to read. Hopefully Garmin will find a brighter display for a later, improved model. The satellite communicator works well and is a feature worth having in case of emergency.

Great product, you CAN search destinations

I have used a lot of GPS units, this one is great! The software could be improved but overall great. Some reviews here say you can not route to destinations or search destinations. That is incorrect, you definitely can, its just an odd/annoying way to do that, but can do it. You can also have a SD card loaded with a lot of different maps and can change them without changing the SD card. There is a learning curve with this but I would recommend it, the 24k maps are super detailed and contain a lot of information.

Worth the $

1.) Satellite acquisition is fast and even works indoors, 2.) You need to read the manual, it’s not an iPhone, 3.) Screen and touch sensitivity is excellent, 4.) Battery holds up well but carry a solar charger just in case, 5.) In-reach is Outstanding

Battery Life

I had the Explorer+ and loved that the battery would last days while tracking. The only thing I didn't like was the old style texting. I ended up giving my brother my Explorer+ and I bought the 700i. I love almost everything about this GPS except that the battery wont last a day while tracking.

Off road bike

I use it primarily for mountain biking. I plan the ride on a website called ride with GPS, then export the points and make the route in the base camp. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to make the route. Make sure you hit eject on the USB or basecamp and turn on the unit to make sure the file has been copied over. I like the option to get satellite messaging and tracking, but so far using it without. (the unit does not nag you about buying a subscription in anyway beside the first time you power on) With this unit it easy to tell the trails apart at the forks. It has Garmin's TopoActive map which is based on OS maps and has all the trails. It also has the City navigator maps for driving. But, you can also add your own map on a card. I also use it in my car to drive to trail heads. I have the windshield mount which is pricey but it will pronounce the turn and street names while driving. The mount itself is also very sturdy. Before this, I was using an iPhone and and it was helpless when there is no signal, lost position, the screen turn off, the brightness need to be turn on full and battery life would be terrible. Google map's trail coverage is not at all detailed, so it was definitely not working for me. If the map does not have it then you cannot route to there. Maps apps now are getting rather bloated and difficult, heavily relying on "cloud". To actually just drop some "pins" to get you out of the woods is a difficult task. Battery life has been fine. I don't have the satellite plan and turn off bluetooth and wifi, 30 second backlight timeout, it draws about 10% per hour. I added ANT+ speed and temperature sensors it doesn't seem to affect the battery life much. I bought an extra battery, it weights 93 grams with a very reasonable price. I would bringing that second battery if I ever feel I need to stay out that long. It also charges really fast at a 2A USB port, so a power pack can also be an option for extending battery life. It has the type of screen where the more sun is on it, the more clear it looks. With that said, sometimes in partial shade and the backlight off, it can be a bit hard to see. It's a Garmin, so the interface looks a bit outdated compared to a smart phone, but it's very easy to use once you get adapted to it and know where all the settings are and what they do. The supporting software is a bit of a mess, I recommend basecamp and Garmin connect. Don't mess with the phone apps. The more software you install you the more frustration you may run into (and this my experience with Garmin ecosystem in general). This is a specialist product for navigating in remote places, if you are expecting the UI experience like on a smart phone, you may be disappointed.
