Great bike with a few upgrades.
I purchased the 2021 model of the Tesoro Neo X2, make no mistake about it this bike comes with the Bosch Performance Line Speed system and a Power Tube 500 wh battery and is a class 3 bike capable of 28 mph speed assist. I was a little disappointed with the front shock because it had preload adjustment only and no lockout feature as pictured on the Cannondale website for this particular model. So right away I called Cannondale and they said things change and no lockout is available on the X2 so I called SR Suntour and they suggested their upgrade program to purchase a better quality suspension fork at a significantly reduced price. So I made some measurements and looked at stock Boost fork specs and SR Suntour built me a Radion Boost air suspension fork with correct offset and travel with lockout feature. I received new fork a few days later and had local Cannondale dealer remove old fork and install the new suspension fork and while they had bike apart they upgraded front Shimano Rotor from 180 to 203mm, cut new fork tube 1" longer and add a 2" handlebar riser for a more upright riding position. I also had them install much higher quality Shimano pedals and I also installed a Topeak rear bag and filled with a HC pump, allen key set, tire irons and patch kit with plenty of room left for my insulated water bottle and other snacks. So with the new air suspension fork the bike is spectacular and also weighs a little less. I cruised along and sampled all levels of assist from the Bosch Purion controller from ECO, Tour, Sport and Turbo. On Eco mode cruising along at 20 mph range calculated itself to 82 mi. On Sport and Turbo modes you can fly and I was easily able to maintain speeds between 25-28 mph. I know it's expensive to purchase but if you can swing the price I highly suggest buying one. You can cover longer distances in a shorter amount of time.
Good-ish bike with nagging/safety issues.
I was very excited when I got this bike, fast and smooth, powerful for hills. However, the first time I rode the bike, the derailleur was not dialed in properly. That's a nuisance that I thought would be easily rectified with the first tune. Second, and more concerning IMO, was that the charging port plug in, which is between the down tube and seat tube and goes in right over the mid-drive, came out of the frame when unplugging the charger. I tried seating the charge port back in place, but it continued to come out whenever I unplugged the charger no matter how careful I was. Then the bike started making intermittent squeaking noises, like a rubber on rubber sound from inside the motor (or above where the charge port goes in). I diagnosed everything else to make sure this was true, it wasn't the pedals, chain, tires, or brakes. I took the bike in for a tune and to have charging port issue addressed. I wrote a list for the REI bike shop folks. The following Saturday I went in and excitedly picked up my bike. Within the first mile, I noticed the derailleur still wasn't exactly right, but it was improved. The annoying rubber squeaking noise was gone, so that was great! When I got home I plugged it in for my commute the next day. When I tried to unplug the charger from the port, the port came loose from the frame. As I don't think this is a safe situation, as I think wires may become bare, I'm returning the bike. I think this is a design flaw with the charge port placement and/or some other issue with my specific bike.
REI changes the configuration
I was looking at the X2 on the Cannondale site. It includes a suspension seat post. I ordered the IDENTICAL bike from REI (without checking the specs on the REI site - it seemed obvious that if the name/model is the same, you get the same thing). When I got the bike, the seat post didn’t have suspension. Just a regular seat post. I complained that it was missing, they told me “tough luck, it’s the way we sell them” which I think is a complete ripoff: if they change the bike, the model name and number should also change. Other than this hiccup, it is a great bike. (Also some issue with getting the battery in and out: not easy, gets stuck)
Buying the Cannondale Tesoro Neo X2 electric bike
The staff at REI was informed and knowledgeable when I purchased the bike. Picking up the bike after it had been delivered to the store was a different experience! The wait time was in excess of one hour and the hand off was too fast without enough time to review the details of this electric bike (my first electric bike). Ample time should have been allocated to the hand off and it was truncated. My expectations of REI were and are higher. That said, the Cannondale Tesoro Neo X2 electric bike is a great bike even if you are a first time ebike rider. The transition from a conventional bike to this ebike takes about two weeks so temper your expectations during the transition and error on the side of being cautious. Give yourself the necessary adjustment time.
a total lemon
Bought it on Wednesday, picked it up on Friday and returned it on Saturday. Didn’t even ride a full mile. Motor noise, front brakes were “chunky “ and noisy; something in the front wheel or bearing sounded like a loose spoke; front suspension locked at top then let go and stuck at bottom of movement. Wife has same bike - trying to decide if I got a specific lemon or is it just a bad model. Have a friend who returned the same model after about 200 miles. Maybe wife’s will go back before it’s too late! Very disappointed, have been a Cannondale fan for years, but they have been sold and may have become just another Chinese job shop assembling assorted parts and slapping on a label.
Great commuter!
So far, this bike is proving to be a great purchase. While definitely steeply priced, the quality is evident during my 22-mile round trip commute. And zero complaint re the battery range. The pedal assist easily manages Seattle’s toughest hills. And aesthetically, the bike is bordering on a nice aggressive vibe (okay, that may be a bit of a stretch, but let me dream).
Updated review after owning for two years
Updated review after owning for two yearsI gave initial review of this bike but after owning for a couple years thought I would review again, I added the boost air fork, larger front brake rotor, pedals, higher handlebar stem and Topeak rear bag. Anyone who buys this bike and doesn't like the initial whine from the Bosche motor keep riding, noise will subside once broken in. What I really like about this bike is how versatile it is, it climbs like a mountain goat at slow speeds out of steep technical ruts and surprisingly the tires don't collect mud like on other mountain bikes I have. Would I use to race downhill ? Absolutely not, its too heavy for that, that's why I have other bikes. Does rail trails and fire roads great, has long range on ECO mode, when I hit a steep incline I change gears and switch to Turbo and it climbs like no ones business. No issues so far, I keep up with maintenance, keep chain and sprockets clean and lubed, change brake fluid once in a while and that's it.
Battery won't go back in once opened
Battery compartment would not close once opened. Even the great tech crew at REI could not get that back in and closed. Deal breaker
Great cruiser with caveats
Age 71 male; owned since November 2021. Great cruiser, gravel & dirt. Poorly designed kickstand; lights don't flash (how difficult would it be to program that safety feature?). Website says tubeless ready but that's only if you buy 2 new tubeless tires, sealant, valve stems (about $225). Poorly designed battery access. At 55 pounds it is actually lighter than most comparable alternative makes.
So far, so good.
First E-Bike for me, and wanted one I could use for errands, touring, and a mix of gravel and pavement. This bike was set up for all that and more. The headlight does not work, and when I called REI bike shop, they said the wiring was done wrong, the two wires with the necessary connectors had to be disconnected and reconnected to reverse polarity. I was unable to pull the connectors apart, so probably need to add to maintenance program when I go in for adjustments. When I picked up the bike, the REI salesman did not have a firm grasp of the product I was picking up. No test ride, seat adjustment, checking out things like headlights to make sure they work. So when I got home and adjusted the seat, I found the handlebars will need to be raised to improve ergonomics of the bike to my frame. Add that to my list of adjustments. The bike motor works great and is easy to change power settings. Brakes work as expected. The seat is very comfortable, I will like the bike better when I get the handlebars adjusted. I've only put about 35 miles on this bike, but so far, am delighted with performance.
