Features

  • 2-layer foam construction is made from the same high-performance polyfoams found in home mattresses atop a durable, waterproof drop-stitch inflatable base
  • Top layer is an engineered open-cell foam that conforms to your body and relieves pressure; bottom layer is a highly resilient foam that provides support and body alignment
  • Drop-stitch inflatable base features thousands of strain-locked polyester threads that allow it to reach high internal pressures, creating a durable, rigid platform
  • When deflated, the drop-stitch base helps compress the foam as you roll it up for transport
  • Mattress cover is made of moisture-wicking stretch nylon twill on top with polyurethane-coated nylon on the bottom
  • Cover zips off the drop-stitch base to allow it to be used alone; a second zipper lets you remove the cover for washing
  • Pockets located at either end of the mattress offer a place to store your phone, ear plugs, headlamp or other essentials, keeping them handy and off the ground
  • Engineered for consistent performance at different ambient temperatures, mattress combines temperature-regulating air flow through upper foam with excellent ground insulation
  • At 18 cm thick, this sleep system has an R-value of 11.8
  • Includes the HEST Sleep System, a drop-stitch patch kit, HEST pump and a carry bag
  • Carry bag makes transporting the sleep system to and from your campsite easy; bag is made of water- and dirt-resistant polyurethane-coated nylon and has a pump storage sleeve
  • Mattress rolls and then secures with integrated compression straps to fit in the carry bag

If it fits your application, perfect

I bought this mattress for a very specific reason, and it has performed perfectly. I live in a homemade camper with a very narrow bed. I have severe arthritis in my back, and sleeping on a bad mattress can cripple me. I had been using a pile of air and foam mattresses, but they kept sliding over eachother and tipping me out of bed. I had to find spots where I could tilt my rig exactly 1 degree toward the wall to minimize the bed-sliding-falling-out-of-bed-all-night problem, and sometimes that's just not feasible. Plus, the air mattresses kept springing slow leaks so I had to inflate my bed every day. When the second set of self-inflating mattresses sprung leaks within the 6 months I'd been using them, I went looking for alternatives and found this mattress. This mattress is 25 inches wide. I would have preferred a 28 inch mattress, but other than that the mattress is great. The air portion is very robust...no slow leaks here, and the heavy material makes tearing or puncturing unlikely. The two pieces stay together even when I'm parked on a slight slope. I've been sleeping on it for several months with no back issues. It's a fairly hard mattress, but that works better for my back. I would caution those who plan to pack and unpack the mattress on a daily basis though. It is heavy (20 plus pounds), it isn't compact when packed, and it doesn't inflate well without the pump because the inflation fitting is designed to be used with the pump only. None of these are problems for me because the mattress stays deployed 100% of the time, but if I had to fold and pack it every day I would consider it a huge hassle.

Uncomfortable
Carolyn

Sounds great, but impossible to get inflation right. Either too hard or too soft. Needs a pump intended for the bed instead of a paddleboard pump, because the lowest psi reading is 7, which is very hard. My hip went straight through the memory foam and I woke up in terrible pain. My husband can sleep anywhere normally, but even he was uncomfortable no matter how we adjusted it. Adding thicker foam might be a solution, except that it would make it bigger and heavier than it already is. Very expensive for something that has numerous drawbacks.

One mattress to replace the rest

This mattress is a game changer. I wish HEST had been around sooner. I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on sleeping pads over the years that have eventually popped, leaked and were generally uncomfortable and unsupportive. Enter the Sleep System. This mattress comes with me on all of my non-backpacking adventures. The foam is super supportive yet also very cushy. It fits in both my tent and truck and stows and stores fairly easily. I recently slept on it for 14 days touring national parks in Montana and could’ve done at least 14 more. The warmth it provided was crucial during the shoulder season and the goodnight sleep made early morning sunrise missions a breeze.

Camping Game Changer

I have absolutely loved using my HEST Sleep System this summer as we are road-tripping and car-camping much closer to home right now. It is so easy to use - from tossing in the back of the car to rolling out in the bed of my husband's truck to of course using and sleeping in our tent. We also pull it right next to our campfire for some comfort lounging as we cook out and make s'mores! I have struggled with inflatable sleeping pads in the past because they always deflate, but that has never happened with my Sleep System! The only issue is we just have one, and I know my husband is getting envious so will probably need to get another one soon!

So comfortable

I camped in a tent in my 20’s and 30’s and really wanted to take it up again now in my 50’s but was worried about the poor quality of sleep on an air mattress. I splurged on 2 of these for my husband and I and I couldn’t be happier! They seem very durable, are easy and quick to inflate, and are supremely comfortable. I have all kinds of aches and pains and was able to get a great night’s sleep on our first camping trip in 15 years. Highly recommend, have another weekend camping trip planned and am excited to use again. They are, of course large and heavy, but have a great strap and carrying bag. I only car camp anyway. We also used as a guest bed and worked well for that.

Maybe better than my home mattress

I got a Hest mattress because my wife and I were tired of waking up too exhausted to enjoy the next day. We have always camped but always slept so so. I sleep better on a hest than I do on our home mattress (Bear). Actually, I just started trying it on our porch and have started sleeping outside pretty regularly. Its also really easy to unpack and pack. The liner on the outside comes off so I can wash it after a dusty trip. The cushion on the bottom is really tough. I don;t think it could ever be punctured. And it comes with a great pump and bag that all fits together. Anyway, this may be the best and last camp mattress I ever buy. Nice job to REI and hest for making this one.

Amazing night's sleep!

I had purchased this mattress with the intention of having a "base camp" sleeping situation in the mountains that I wasn't planning on packing into my backpack for my days trips as I wanted to explore different areas from a single base point each day. When I came back exhausted from each trip I was so thankful to have such a supportive, comfortable, and warm mattress to sleep on each night. In previous years I had always used air or air/foam inflatable mattresses due to their light weight/packability. However, I never really got the overnight rest that I wanted and was always slightly cold/uncomfortable. The HEST sleep system has changed the game for me! Knowing that I had an awesome base camp to come back "home" to, I was able to push myself further on each day hike and that confidence made my trip that much better. Highly recommended!

This it the sleeping pad I've dreamt about! I was skeptical with some of the reviews but this thing is amazing. If you fully inflate it is really hard (don't). I bled off some air till I was sinking into the air mattresses but not down to the ground and it was perfect. It's not my serta iComfort but it smokes anything I've ever slept on outdoors. It is somewhat bulky and heavy but I'll gladly haul it from the truck to my tent and back. Not a Backcountry item but it's not made to be. As for durability, it's built like an inflatable kayak and has the same Summit 2 air valve our Aire Tomcats have and the included pump can fill a boat (That explains the cost). If you're on the fence- DO IT

Made camping fun again

I've not been camping in nearly twenty years. Too many aches, groans, pains, and that's just from getting out of bed (and being out of shape). This has helped at least part of that. It's only really good for car camping as it is not light, but it's an amazing improvement over cots, thin pads, stand alone air-mattresses, foam pads, etc. My only complaints are that it's a little slippery at an angle with the bag I had (probably my fault) and a little too narrow when I roll around when I sleep (probably also my fault), but neither of those really made this any less effective or less an enjoyable experience. Will be testing out the wide version soon.

Durability + company with a conscience!

After 10 years of buying countless disposable, leaky inflatable beds for sleepovers for my kids' friends and holiday visits from relatives, I have finally found an inflatable mattress whose durability matches its comfort! My cat's claws haven't put a hole in it either thanks to its thickness. I haven't used it for camping yet but know that a good night's sleep at a campground or national park means less irritability, sharper thinking, and more enjoyment with my friends and family the next day. On a side note, I stumbled across a recent web page that detailed how HEST temporarily shifted its engineering to the fabrication of clear face shields. They were donated them to healthcare workers in the Seattle area. Cool.

The best van life bed

By far the most comfortable camping/van life mattress I’ve ever slept on. I have well over 60+ nights on this mattress and have no complaints. Love how portable and durable it is.

Perfect for Car Camping

This is an incredible upgrade for car camping in my Subaru Outback. I previously used backpacking mats but would wake up stiff every morning. The HEST pad is perfect un-inflated, with the foam mattress supportive and comfortable. I wake up refreshed. The inflatable base can be zippered off - and I think the only time I'd use that is if I place it in a tent where having that barrier would be necessary. The only downside is that the sleeping pad is bulky. I mean, it's a foam pad. Rolling it up while car camping is a bit of a pain, so I just kind of stash it in the rear or in the roof top storage bin.
