Best Helmet Audio for Music Yet!

I purchased these from REI about 2 weeks ago and have now skied three days with the Smith - Aleck 006 helmet speakers, and they are truly next level when bringing the audio into my ski experience! Finally we have speakers with some volume so the music can be heard during windy days or when your charging down the mountain. I’m a musician as well, so this in critical for me (i.e. actually hearing definition in the music with proper volume levels). The Outdoor Tech Chips 2.0 (which the Aleck’s replaced) just could not suitably penetrate the cloth of the helmet earmuffs, so the sound was weak and drowned out by the wind, etc. Not so with the Alecks, these puppies put out 120 decibels so I never need to go above about 70% on my volume setting for the music to be very present in my ears, which puts a huge smile on my face. The speakers sound great as well and higher production value recordings really shine thru the Alecks. Now, no one should expect audiophile-type critical listening headphones or car-rattling bass, but I have never heard better in-helmet speakers and I am extremely stoked for more days on the hill with the Alecks! The Bluetooth never went out, the signal has been constantly strong and the batteries have some longevity as well, they still had some power left after 2 days on the Mtn. I do not plan to use these for anything but playing music, so I can’t comment on using the App or communicating with others or even taking a phone call, as that’s not what I’m on the Mtn to do. For music, these Alecks rock!

"Walkie-talkie" requires WiFi

I got one of these as a gift. The walkie talkie mode requires WiFi, which makes them pretty useless on the mountain

Great audio and comms!

I purchased four of these units for my wife and two kids and i must say they have really not disappointed! The audio quality is way better than other helmet audio products i've used before (helped massively by the awesome in-app equalizer!) and the communication function is really cool. Being able to stay in constant contact with my family going down the slopes (with some wiping out more than others!) was really useful. I use a Sweet Protection Switcher helmet and the headphones fit it perfectly. Definitely recommend this product.

Solid purchase.Worth it just for the communication

I bought a pair of these at the Reno store a few months ago, and have been using them to keep easy communication between my friends and my wife when we are up on the hill. Easier to change course, find people, and tell jokes throughout the day. Being able to find people with the GPS/map feature is also really great. The 006's fit in my Giro Edit no problem and they hold a solid charge. I get about 3 days of riding in per full charge. The audio is also a step up from my previous audio kit. These 006's can bump when you want them to. Its nice to have an equalizer

Killer Communication!

I've had these for about 2 months now and absolutely love them! I had moved on from my OT chips to my airpods, because they were so much more user friendly. I decided to give the 006 a shot and i am very happy with these! You can easily communicate with a group, listen to music or even use Siri on your phone. They allow you the ability to stay connected for music only and turn off the BT connection for each individual group if you want to control what you say to only certain groups. The controls are easy to use once you've learned the different gestures/pushes needed to operate each function. They slip into the helmet audio slots easily and more importantly hold a charge for weeks unused! Highly recommended and sure to continue improving!

The best helmet audio option!

I’ve tried a few different helmet audio drop ins and these blow the others out of the water. These sound really impressive, give you some EQ customization options through the app, and are thinner than other options out there. Operation is intuitive, Bluetooth connectivity was a breeze and the sound quality has left a picky musician satisfied. :) if you’re considering the Alta Wireless option, don’t. Go with the Aleck for a little extra dough. You won’t be sorry.

App has issue. Otherwise, great!

I had previously had Bluetooth helmet audio from another brand - their 2.0 version specifically. The audio quality was poor and the buttons were a little finicky from day one and ended up failing in the first month. I decided to give Smith a try. The audio quality is noticeably better. Lots of people complaining about the app but be realistic with expectations. Many ski areas have cell towers but coverage can be spotty depending on terrain - at least here in CO. I’m not sure how practical the app and walkie talkie feature really are. Regular phone calls work fine. Phone audio is good on both ends. I purchased these primarily to be able to hear my phone ring and to listen to music/podcasts while skinning uphill without having to worry about forgetting or dropping earbuds. They serve this purpose well without the need for the app.

Best for walkie-talkie

I used these for the first time for a ski trip last weekend and they are a life saver for keeping in communication with your family and friends of different experience levels on the mountain without constantly pulling out your phone. Easy listening to music is an added bonus. Regardless of what other reviewers are saying - it did NOT require wifi to work... I had zero issues with connectivity on the mountain. The app is also great to have up when you may not have your helmet on.

terrible battery

I've tried to use these headphones twice now. the first day I charged them for two hours to 100%. I turned them on once I got on the lift, then after maybe 45 minutes of skiing my phone said the headphones were at 50% battery. Once they were at 50% a voice saying "low battery" played over the my music every minute until they turned off at 30% about 10 minutes later. I then charged them over night and had the same issue today. Terrible battery for $130, but even if the battery lasted longer I don't want a voice telling me the battery is low for half of the battery life.

Group chat doesn't work

We bought two of these so we could stay in touch on the mountain and the group chat is beyond worthless. It does not function as advertised. The only function that works is playing music. We read the instructions and they did not work. We looked at online tutorials, they did not work. These simply do not work. Save your money and buy cheaper headphones.
