So close to greatness
This is like a flat version of Five Ten Kestrel but with better quality, enclosures, a more anatomical foot shape (its no Altra but its better than the bizarre narrow shoes most cycling companies make), it’s stiffness is also almost perfect, but the sad reality is no one makes rubber like FIve Ten, I rode these back to back with my the following shoes (from most to least grip): Original Freeriders, Impact Pro, Original Impact, Freerider Pro. And they were all at least twice as grippy as these shoes. If you are doing light cross country/trail riding these may work for you, but if you lean your bike, pop off terrain, jump, or regularly ride technical trails, these X-Alps will not inspire confidence.
Pretty great shoe for two wheels
I can definitely see how some of the other reviewers have given this shoe lower scores but I respectfully disagree at some points. It’s a great shoe for riding about town and onto some single track. I can see how you might want a softer sole to grip onto your pedals if the studs are minimal, but with my PNW alloy pedals these are great. The boa makes this my go to commuting shoe over my regular around town sneakers and they’ve got a robust construction allowing me to not think about them twice when I toss them on. I’d say if you’re like me and ride them around town to your favorite brewery and anything that comes your way via two wheels it’s going to suit you well.
Boa system is the wrong choice for MTB shoes
The Boa closure system on this shoe is a cool idea, and very convenient for tightening. However, I would not recommend this shoe for aggressive mountain bikers. On my third ride with these shoes, I brushed up against a root at moderate speed, catching the plastic Boa tightening knob, and it exploded off the shoe. The whole system was destroyed, and I had no way of tightening the shoe, making the rest of my ride very sketchy. I do not believe this was a fluke - the Boa system just isn't designed to take the kind of abuse that a good MTB shoe needs to withstand. All that said, the shoe is comfortable and well constructed. The grip felt good on my OneUp aluminum pedals. I am typically a size 9.5 wide, and a 44 fit me well. I used my own footbeds to add some arch. Needless to say, I will be returning these and going back to laces.
May be perfect for those whose feet are not wide.
A pretty nice shoe overall, but I need to return due to the toe box being too tight. After averaging 50+ miles/day the pressure points on the outside of both feet become very painful. A second drawback, while not painful, is a nuisance: the tongue of the shoe slips off to one side unless the lace is pulled very tight. I personally prefer the 5-10 Pro.
Good enough.
I bike commute to work. And since riding in my work boots (8.5" full grain leather steel-toed boots) isn't really an option I bought these for the commute. Pros: I like the boa system for the easy on/off and I don't have to worry about getting laces caught. My feet don't overheat in the 90 degree summer heat. They're wide enough, especially in the toe box, which is something I often have trouble finding. Comfy enough to walk the block and a half from my office to my locker room in another building. Power transfer: the first day I wore them I had a 1.5mph speed increase from the road running shoes I had been previously wearing. Cons: Most of my commute is on roads and bike paths. For the most part, these are well paved and smooth. I have one section of old country dirt/gravel road that's pretty bumpy. I lose traction on the pedal pretty regularly on my gravel section and very easily on the smooth sections if I've ridden through a puddle and gotten the shoe wet.
Good Quality Bike Shoes
Four stars mainly because I haven’t used it yet. I tried them on and overall, I’d say it is grippy and made of good quality materials. I usually wear a size 12, bought a 46 which is an 11.5 and sizing half size down is just perfect for biking.
Fine for novice mtb
Durable and comfortable are two words that come to mind. In just getting started with single track and find these just fine for me. Good discount due to the colorway?
Great for Casual Rides
I don't bike on any aggressive trails and my biking is mainly for fitness. This serves the purpose well and I've got no complaints.
Poor traction
The soul is too hard. The shoe slips on the pins on my pedals.
