You had one job
2 stars is a little on the brutal side it probably deserves a 3 in my estimation but seeing all the 5 stars is a head scratcher. Quality in construction seams fine but software from a device that has one function really isn't what it should be. I've used it for a year now and recently went to Mexico, Baja Sur. I ran it simultaneously next to google maps on a tablet both had flaws, short story is if you use it for off roading it excels over competition but for pavement google maps has it beat hands down and thats real embarrassing in my book.
Device is okay; Garmin software useless
I've had past Garmin devices for cycling. Decided to give the Overlander a try for road trips and offroad camping/exploring trips. The Garmin software, apps render this thing a $700 paperweight. The Garmin user interface is not intuitive and is a bear to get through. Can not easily create routes on Basecamp or Garmin Explore or whatever I'm supposed to use to do so. Can't download/sync recent tracks to my Mac. Doesn't play with Connect.Garmin like the Edge units. I have no idea what they are trying to do with this thing. It works okay off-road but also displays a bunch of forest service roads that are no longer present such that I spend a lot of time zig-zagging in the mountains trying to find roads the Garmin thinks exist. So it is unreliable for findings routes when out in the thick of it. So much technology, so little usability.
Fairly worthless piece of hardware
Unpackaged unit today and setup. Has none of the features I was expecting in a portable GPS unit. I guess it may be useful as an on road/on trail navigator, as it will tell you where on a map you are currently located. However, the unit has none of the features you would expect of a portable unit to go exploring. Does not have a trackback feature. Does not navigate to waypoint with heading or bearing readouts. Does not have an off course/xtrack read out. Does not have a heading line or arc compass. Could not find distance to next, time to next, distance to destination or time to destination. This unit will not function for marine or off trail navigation. Only zooms into 150ft, good luck using it for any sensitive navigating in poor weather or the dark. Will be returning this unit and will not be recommending it to anyone. The only feature that it has that can’t be found on many cheaper options is the pitch and roll feature (which needs calibration evertime you mount it, old school anolog pitch and roll would be better). My smartwatch with an ABC feature connected to my Mini inReach with Earthmate is a much more capable portable navigation tool.
Just what I wanted.
This does everything I wanted it to do and so much more. Software updates were very easy. I would recommend this if looking a GPS.
