Shoes review
I originally bought the Izumi tour road, tested them them for one day, but I didn't feel safe using them while commuting in the city, so I exchanged them with the Izumi Men's X-ALP Cannyon. WHAT A SHOES. I felt great coming to a complete stop or taking off uphill. I am using them with Shimano pedal M540, and cycling now isa whole new experience. The shoes are comfortable, solid bottom, perfect for wide foot. I usually wear 43/44 shoes, the 44 was little large for me, so I picked 43.
Ok for casual riding
I switched to platform pedals (from being clipped in) and bought these shoes as reasonably priced option. The quality and sturdiness of the shoes seems good, but the fit and lacing system is less than great for me. I believe the length/fit is correct for my foot and yet my heel keeps lifting up, slipping around whenever I do any kind of aggressive riding or climbing. I've owned a few other biking shoes and haven't had this issue. I think the lacing system on these is the problem and it seems they need at least one more set of lace holes to be able to secure the shoe higher up on the foot. I'd recommend these for casual, around the town use but not aggressive riding.
Good on the bike, okay off the bike
I bought these to use for all my biking needs: touring, trail-riding, commuting, and walking around off the bike. As a clipped-in SPD shoe they've been very comfortable both in short jaunts and all-day riding. The mesh can get pretty breezy when it's cold, but thick socks and a toe cover fix that. They seem to dry well too after getting wet. After a couple tours and bikepacking trips they've held up terrifically - no failures/rips/ungluings. I do find them a tad narrow though, at least for someone like me who prefers Keen-like toe boxes. Off the bike they are a little more comfortable than the X-Alp Summit shoes that they replaced. The Canyons are less stiff and look like a normal shoe, which was a main reason I got them. However the tongue does like to move a lot, and due to the stiffness in the sole your heel can lift up off the shoe floor when walking. I'll echo another review in that another, higher eyelet for the laces would be nice. Walking on a perfectly smooth indoor floor I don't notice any cleat strike, but it's unavoidable on sidewalk with even the smallest loose gravel on it. They're good for what they are intended for, gravel/dirt riding and quick hike-a-bike sections. But for the commute or tour, it'd be a good idea to have another pair of shoes or sandals waiting to go for extended walking.
Lace loops broke before the first ride
After a few lacings (taking them on/off to adjust the cleat) one of the lace loops broke. Didn't even get a chance to get a ride in. Really poorly made.
The Shoes Started Failing within the First Month
I bought the shoes because I needed a pair for indoor cycling and they looked comfortable. About a few weeks after using the shoes one of the lace straps tore; I ignored the issue since they still did their job. Sometime later, another lace strap tore. This kept happening and I put up with the problem since I was only using the shoes for indoor cycling. Once I decided to take the shoes back to REI, I was outside of their one year return period. I am now in the process of sending the shoes back to Pearl Izumi.
Not a performance product
Wide opening and poor top retaining for pull cycle. These attributes make it a comfortable shoe, but a poor clip-less pedal biking-shoe. For it to really grip you need to over-tighten the laces probably explaining why some people here broke the top eyelet. Looks, ventilation and front edge protection are good, but fails at its main purpose of transferring load through the pedal cycle and the sole bends. Mine are going back. At this level a platform pedal and flat sole shoes will be more comfortable and practical.
Stitching on lace eyelets popped
First time I put the shoes on and laced them up the stitching popped on one eyelet from each shoe. I don't think i was tightening the laces too much and a different loop popped on each shoe. Seems like a quality control issue on the stitching of these shoes. Unfortunately I didn't get to try the shoes out on my bike.
Amazing shoes!!!
Absolutely love these shoes!!! I have a large wide foot and these shoes fit perfect and are super comfortable! Didn’t take very long to break in either!! I wear them primarily for spin class at my local Y and my rides are so much better! I would buy again and again!!
Ride a bike or hike a bike, they work!
A mountain bike shoe that is nearly as good off the bike as on. On the heavy side for sure, they have oroven durable so far. Some eill dislike the lace up option, but they are at least easily secured under the elastic loops. Do be aware that the deep tread on the outsole will require you to shim your cleats quite a bit to make clipping in and out an attainable task.
Not as good as my previous Pearl iZumi Shoes
These shoes are nice looking and fairly comfortable when I first tried them. The positive feelings about the shoes ended quickly. After riding a very short distance the tongue of the shoe moves to the side making the shoes uncomfortable. I often have to stop several times to recenter the tongue. I would not recommend these shoes.
