Review from an 8 year old (with dad's help)
Looks - The wheat color is nice, looks a bit like a bumble bee. I wish it was a bit more yellow. The lace color and pattern is cool. Material - I like the leather uppers and how they feel. Fit - True to size, looks a bit chunky compared to other similar sized shoes, but fits the same. It was a bit tough to tighten the laces enough that my foot couldn't slide around. Grip - Good tread on the sole, very good grip on grass and hard surfaces. I like the triangles, good grip for hiking. Comfort - On a hot day (100 degrees) they felt a bit hot at recess playing jump rope. Very good otherwise. They work well with taller crew socks. Overall - They're very cool, very nice.
Improved our hiking experience
Previous shoes made hikes painful and we couldn't go as long as we wanted. The arch support is uncomfortable when initially put on, but feel fine while hiking. The toe box is large enough that toes do not feel squished together. The shoes are completely waterproof for a few minutes but then the breathable fabric starts to leak a little. The traction is great, no slipping. We got the sizing wrong though. These were ordered for my 11 year old son and were too small, but they fit my 9 year old son great. We ordered based on European sizing from their current brand.
They had been worn!
We received these boots today and they had clearly been worn! The bottoms of the shoes were dirty and there were some scuffs on the side. We received them the day before our trip, so no time to return and get new ones. So disappointing.
If I could give 0 stars, I would
I want to start by saying I love Merrell. I’ve used their hiking boots before, and my 7 year old had a pair that were excellent. They lasted him for over a year, and were heavily used and beat up. We decided to get Merrell again because of their great products. Unfortunately, after about three days of use these boots started to fall apart. The hooks for the laces ripped off, the laces themselves started coming apart, along with the lining keeping the boot to the sole. They’re also not waterproof as advertised. My son spent his birthday REI gift card on these, and I was told all I could do was write this review. Maybe for a photo op or light wear these boots would be fine, but if you’re actually looking to do some real hiking or heavy use, spend your money on a different pair. I still like Merrell overall; these boots were just a disappointment.
Great hiking shoes for little hikers
These Merrell hiking boots are my four-year-old’s new favorite shoes! Unlike other hiking shoes I have tried for my kids, these are very easy to put on and stay tied through a whole hike. He can walk through puddles and creeks in them and his feet stay dry. They offer great traction on wet rocks and uneven trails as well. I’d suggest sizing up one size, as my size 11 son fit well in a 12. I do wish that for younger kids they offered Velcro closure, so kids could put them on independently. But that’s not enough to deter me from recommending these sturdy shoes for all serious little hikers!
So far, so good!
Bought these for my 6.5 y/o son and he finally got to wear them on a serious outing. Around the yard and neighborhood they have been great but I was a little concerned about reviews of them not being waterproof. Happy to say after a very wet fishing trip, hiking over wet rocks/uneven terrain on a jetty, to getting completely soaked on our hike back to the truck his feet stayed dry and comfortable. They also held up well to abrasions on the rocks/sand/barnacles. We both like how they can be laced all the way up for serious fun or skip the top eyelet for more of a quick and casual fit running out the door. Overall a very solid boot so far. We'll see how they hold up to a couple months of abuse this fall.
Wrong size delivered
Excited for these to arrive to go hiking and camping this coming weekend. Our older son has the same pair of boots and has been happy with the performance in dry hiking conditions. We ordered a kids Size 11 for our younger son when they were on sale and received Size 12 boots in a Size 11 box. We'll end up keeping them because Size 11's are no longer available in this model and he'll grow into them. For this weekend hiking we're going to have to figure out some different footwear.
not waterproof
my son is almost 9, and we hike a LOT. he loves the fit and style and comfort of these hiking boots however, they are not in any way waterproof- unless we got a defective pair? soaking wet little feet is not fun on the trail. have had to turn back multiple times now :(
Good shoe
They were sized great and my nephew loved that his uncle gave him his first pair of tie shoes. The laces do come untied relatively easy but is an easy fix with a better knot. They are heavier than shoes my nephew has worn in the past so that took some getting used to but he loves them. He never lost his footing so I know the traction is good because he isn’t the most coordinated person, although he is only 4 years old. I look forward to doing more hiking with him and doing more technical terrain with these well built boots.
not waterproof as promised
We just returned from 3 days on Kilimanjaro, sleeping at the Mandara and Harumbo huts. My 10 and 12 year olds really liked these new boots, and we were anticipating good performance, due to the waterproof claim. Though in the rainforest on day one, a torrential downpour accompanied us for all 5.8 miles. My kids feet were soaked. No chance of drying out overnight, and although we had less rain on day two, and no rain on day three, the boots stayed soaked through the trip- including the very chilly 5am departure for the 12 mile decent from the 12,000ft elevation on day three, due to remaining puddles and mud on the trail. My husband's and my boots--another brand and also labeled as waterproof-- got wet inside, but they did not get soaked. With morning and evening change of socks, we were able to find acceptable semi-dry-foot situations for us. But the kids would have had to change socks 5+ times a day to absorb all the moisture in these Merrells. I understand there is no boot but a rubber one that can withstand a triopical deluge. However the claim that these boots are waterproof is just- how can I say it nicely-? Incorrect. I will be asking for a refund. Also, the toe wrap on one boot was coming off, merely after this inaugural trip. Sad- the kids found them very comfortable, and I liked the price. But you can imagine the feeling when your kids have no option but to continue wearing cold, soaking shoes, three days in a row, with no faciilities to dry or warm them. Very disappointing. I now re-read the other reveiws and see that the majority of them come from those who received free merchandise. Hmmm....
