I've been using this pack about once a week for the past year. It's also been my go-to travel backpack. With the frame removed, it can easily fit under an airline seat. Pros - I love having quick access to 4 pockets without opening the main compartment. I love the secret pocket under the lid, the pole attachment loops, and the included rain guard. I love the suspended, ventilated back panel. I wish all my bags had this. I love the size, shape, and inherent utility. Cons- The fabric cannot handle even mild abuse. It's tearing all over despite being treated fairly gently. I guess Deuter decided to use weak material to keep weight down, but it's overly delicate.* Less than a year of ownership and I'm looking everywhere for a similar bag made out of sturdier material. I can't find the same size, external pockets, and suspension back with 1000D outer anywhere. *Oddly enough my Deuter Race EXP is made of even thinner material, but has held up to much more abuse (3 bike crashes, 3 day a week carry, being put down without care on the sidewalk everyday). And then of course I have a 20 year old generic Jansport with less wear as well. The Groden 32 is a shame of a bag. Excellent design, but cannot stand up to EDC use.
Call me old and that’s OK, but I love the old style legacy packs for their external pockets. I can put the stuff I need for quick access in the outer pockets and leave the main compartment for stuff I need at camp or later. My only issue with this pack is the waist belt could be a bit more robust. However, under a load, the pack rides well.
I have been enjoying this pack, and am pleased with the material and organization. The hip belts are mostly not useful for me, as I only rarely carry a large weight in the pack. So these, and their straps, get in my way sometimes. I like to tuck the hip belts behind the back mesh, and also close the hip buckle behind the mesh - this way they do not bother me when I carry light loads. See photo.
I have had the pack for six months, and use it for hikes and travel in the city. Pros : good material and strong pack, generally comfortable, good back ventilation, color is nice (not always a strong point with Deuter...), four outside pockets, rain covering. Cons : top pocket is a bit small in my opinion, top zipper is a bit rougher than the other ones for some reason, inner clip for key-chain/valuables is too small and stiff. For the price, this is a good 32-liter pack for general use. There are lighter and better packs for more specific types of hiking (not so many pockets, lighter frame, etc.) but this is a good multi-purpose pack if you don't want to keep a collection of packs at home.
I bought this two months ago and I just got a chance to use it several days ago for city travel. Well, I like this pack because it gives me a simple and classic style that supports my style wherever I go. However, I think I need more colourful one like another series of backpack. As I know that Deuter always gives its best in colouring. That is the reason I like Deuter so much. Futhermore, it is good for the people who like city travel and daily use.
