This is a great pack, and unlike the one-star review, we received exactly the pack pictured. I needed an even lighter weight daypack than my Deuter 27L that’s probably 10 years old now. I had tried a bunch of lighter packs on in store and was unhappy with all of them. They either lacked a waist strap, fit strangely, had flimsy and thin shoulder straps, or were unappealing colors. Since I knew Deuter’s quality, we chose to gamble and order these online during the Anniversary Sale, the 16L for me, and the 18L for my husband. The fit was great for us both (I’m 5’5” and he’s 5’10”). We do have after-market water bottle holsters for us both that attach to the straps, as we both dislike using hydration bladders. The add-on makes it perfect, and we move these to whichever packs we are using. Love the easy zip access to the main compartment so that you can quickly access items even at the bottom of your pack. My husband loves that the hip belt folds into the pack, as he prefers to go without when using a lighter pack. Although we bought these for long summer hikes where we want to minimize weight and cover high miles in a day, we’ve continued using them through the colder weather. I can easily fit rain gear, down layer, food, stove/fuel/Toaks cookpot for a hot lunch. Although I normally take my 27L when carrying snowshoes, I’m going to give this one a shot on our next trip.
Normally I love Deuter packs. I have 2 others in different sizes that are perfect. This one was a miss, first and foremost because the Deuter Trail 16 SL that I received was not the pack that is pictured and described here. It almost is, but there are some weird discrepancies. First, there is no whistle on the sternum strap. Then I noticed that the hip straps are different. There's no mesh on the outside as pictured, they're entirely a different shape, and the photos show something to tuck the excess strap into -- that's missing, too. Second, the fit is odd. I'm 5'2" and this felt too small for me. The hip straps are in the wrong place. They hit way too high. And the way the hydration pack system is designed makes the hose rub my neck in a really uncomfortable way. Maybe I got an old version of this pack? Either way, it's not what I bought, so I returned it.
I tried this pack on in store and decided to research online before purchasing. Ended up ordering the pack online a couple weeks later, but the one I received is NOT the pack in the pictures or description - it’s a newer model. The pack they sending no longer has an adjustable back, it no longer has the built in signal whistle, and the overall fit and feel is not good. I thought I was crazy so I went back to the store I originally tried it on, and the associate was just as confused as I was. They no longer had the pack I tired on, they only had the model I received online. After digging in it, the associate realized that the pack they are now selling is the new model but they have not updated the description or pictures online. The new version of this pack is a cheaper one that removes all the features that made it great, but Deuter is still charging the same price for a lesser quality product. They also still sell the pack with full features in Europe, so it’s just the American customers they are ripping off. This has been the only brand of pack I have used for years, but it no longer. Very disappointed to see them jump on the less product for more money bandwagon.
Love this pack! This all in one pack supports many use cases from climbing to hiking etc and has capacity for more as needed. Deuter always thinks through the ideal straps/pockets/etc both inside and out. The outer compartments are ideally placed. I appreciate this pack being lighter weight but still not sacrificing on comfort on the shoulders/hips. The over strap is perfect for allowing more storage or less as needed, and the outer zip access is a great feature for easy access. As a short 5'3 gal the SL torso length & design from Deuter is all that ever really fits right. I am a current Deuter Ambassador and after trying various packs have found this (& the 28L) to be a favorite! Thank you Deuter!
The women's fit is now key to my hiking experience. I went on a 7 mile hike and my lower back did not hurt. The pack held everything I needed.
While I really wanted to love this pack, it just didn't fit my 5'3" frame well, it came halfway up my head. Couldn't adjust any smaller. What it lacked also for me was the pockets were not well placed, thus you'd need to take off your back and go into it while detached from your body. I like to yank and pull things while I'm actually hiking, without having to stop. Also, the hip belt is way wide and has no pockets. I knew that going in and thought I could live with it. Turns out, I can't! I'm used to the Gregory Maya packs with loads of exterior pockets, pockets on the hip belt and lots of ways to use the hooks and loops on the outside of the pack. After returning this, I purchased both the Osprey Tempest 20 and the Gregory Maya 20 and will compare both and return one of them. Also a redeeming factor in the Gregory Maya 20 is the water reservoir compartment, which is well padded so I can use it to place my laptop in there when using the pack for travel and work. The red color is a deep blood red and quite attractive. You can't go wrong with the Gregory OR the Osprey!
Got this for my girlfriend in teal and uses it every time we go hiking with our dogs. I have thought about buying the men's version myself seeing that she likes it so much. This was the perfect gift for her! Lightweight and the ventilation is good so there's no issues with back sweat.
For years I've used the Trail 28 SL, but I don't always need a pack that big. I'm so happy deuter came out with this smaller size. I love that it's under 30L but still has features like the brain and u shaped zipper opening
