Great backpack for photographers & hiking

I found the Deuter jaypack 36 to be a great all around option for long day hikes, there are pockets for storage everywhere, very well thought out features like the sun glass holder, hydration pack routing, axe holder, rain flap, the pack even has an sos sign if you find yourself in trouble. 10 out of 10 when it comes to thoughtful user friendly design.I especially like the way the backpack rest on your back allowing ventilation and even weight distribution. I set the included camera bag up with my old Nikon dslr, a few lenses, a set of binoculars and still have room for more accessories or another camera. Like others have stated the backpack and the camera bag are both great as standalone products when you combine the two there really isn’t much space left for gear in the backpack. While I find that the camera bag is a secure way to transport and store my camera equipment l usually mount a 55-200mm lens on my camera and find myself leaving the rest of the gear in the camera bag at home or in the car.leaving plenty of space inside for the gear I want to carry on my hike. I’d recommend this backpack if you are into long hikes and if you’re into photography this is a great solution to combine both hobbies.

Thoughtful design, but awkward when used

I received these products for free from the REI sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I want to love this bag, as Deuter makes thoughtful and well designed packs. It is comfortable, it is individually thoughtful, it has everything you would want in an adventure bag... but doing everything means you have to sacrifice somewhere. BUT, I still don't love it and won't use it the way it is designed. Let me explain why. The main bag is thoughtful, well designed, and shows its true hiking roots. The Camera Box Two insert is a functional and well designed camera protective case. If you use either of them independently, you're in good hands. When you combine them though, it gets a little awkward like a second date request when she's just not that into you. The Camera Box insert fits into the bag fine, but it is a little finicky to get through the opening when fully loaded out, and also leaves some room unused by the camera box but doesn't leave that space in an overly usable manner. The opening aligns "well enough", but not perfect. Sliding it into the bag, doable, but tight. Bag already fully packed out and you need to get the camera box out or in for some reason, sometimes a bit tough. Side access? Not there.. because you'd lose other functionality if it was. What if you don't need to fully pack out the insert? Sorry, no option... you just lose the space. The rest of the sectioned off areas of the bag are functional for what they were designed for, but when hiking with camera gear in the main compartment, you need those areas to function in ways that they weren't specifically designed for and that ends up being a bit more awkward. Need a stove? Fuel canister? Some food? Coffee? First Aid kit? Those can all fit in the bottom if you've got relatively compact gear. What if you need a shell? Midlayer? Gloves? Getting a little tighter. Glasses? Goggles? Hat? Shove them in the top. Hiking poles? Lash them, unless you also need to carry a monopod or tripod... then you may have to choose. GPS unit? You might be able to find somewhere to shove it. Emergency gear? Bivvy? Eh. Be ready to give up something else. Your loadout will be well supported on your back, and your back cool due to the awesome deuter carry design... but, you won't have what you need or will have to make some serious compromises on what you carry and why. Now, all of the above makes sense to a certain extent, as this is only a 36L pack. The problem is, you could carry that load out in a 36L pack with no problem, and your camera gear... if the camera gear insert was designed differently, or modularized to allow you to tailor what you are carrying exactly to what you need instead of just having one giant cube. So, the pack, great. The cube on its own, great. The two together, probably not carrying it that way. I'll use smaller modular padded cases, wraps, etc to meet my needs.

Great Pack

I was very surprised with how great this pack is. I was worried it may be on the small end but it is the perfect size for day trips and short overnight trips. I really like how many storage options come with the pack and the padded case is great for any electronics or cameras you bring with you. The pack feels very durable and is comfortable to wear for multiple hours. Overall, a 10/10 pack.

Everything you want in a large day pack

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This pack has everything you love in backpacking packs in a smaller form. Camera pouch is large and fully customizable. So many thoughtful pockets and openings. Extremely versatile and exactly what I was looking for since I got into photography.

Capable and useful backpack

I love Deuter backpacks - I've had several and never had any issues even over a long lifetime. I've been on the lookout for a mid-size pack as we plan a trip for next year that only requires packs for long hiking days in variable conditions. My 18L go-to pack feels a little small for the trip. So, when this cam up for a product test I was excited, though when I requested the product test, I did not realize the backpack is targeted towards camera users. Though not a heavy camera user, I think it could work well as one, but with some drawbacks. First off, the gear stowage possibilities are great. Aside from the standard two main compartments, there's a good sized top compartment, small zippered pockets on both sides, two zippered pockets on top (one internal), one water bottle pocket on each side, a small sleeve pocket in the back, and small hip zipper pockets on both sides. With my uses cases in mind, the hip pocket comfortably holds a passport, but not a phone. The main compartments have plenty of space for gear, if you take out the included camera organizer. With respect to the camera component organizer, it's big; it takes up the whole main compartment really. If you also wanted some rain gear and water, the pack will be pretty close to capacity. The rigidness does have some uses outside of cameras though. Using the rigid dividers, it makes a great family picnic basket. My test hike put crackers and chips in their own divider, and water bottles in other dividers, and the chips were in good condition at the top of the hike. I can see layering in sandwiches and other snacks that I'm used to having squished on the trail with dividers. It's bulky for that use case, but I won't have any kids complaining about squished sandwiches. However, even when you align the zippers for the organizer and the backpack, the whole case is not super accessible, without unbuckling the straps. This may not be a big deal for camera users but for us, this is where I took the product down from a perfect score. It felt like some small tweaks in design could have made it more accessible without really making any compromises. The one other thing to note is that those zippers are on the back of the backpack, so different from any other internal frames I've used, you have access to the main compartment from the top and the back. I can see that being useful but I worry about whether the zippers will have any problems over time which would make the backpack unusable. All in all, a capable and useful pack with lots of great storage options. There's a few tradeoffs in targeting this to camera users, but I think it will serve me well over time and I can see using it regularly for day trips for a long time.

Camera unit tight fit

The packitdelf is well made and has good features. A good size for trekking and would meet carry-on size requirements, The included camera unit is ok by itself, but unfortunately does not really fit the pack! It is hard to get in and out, and difficult to access camera gear when in the pack. You could get a different camera unit from peak designs or F-stop that would work better.
