Great all-purpose IK
This is an excellent all-purpose kayak. We use it for both calm lakes and class III rivers. Huge weight capacity and very durable. I've been bouncing this kayak over AZ / UT rocks for three years now it has no damage beyond cosmetic. Several reviews are dinging the tracking. Any kayak without a skeg will track terribly. You can get a skeg box from NRS and use Staybond to adhere to the kayak. It makes a HUGE difference. I use an all-water skeg for the lake / ocean and a whitewater skeg for rivers. Holds all the gear for multi-day trips or a couple of kids / dogs. Good to go.
Love this kayak
I spent a lot of time searching for an inflatable kayak, and I am really happy with the quality of this one. It is fast and easy to inflate and handles very well. I have used both with another person and alone as well with weight in the front and it is great both ways. I've used it on lakes and some river float trips, no white water yet, but looking forward to more time on the water! It's also very easy to pack up and toss in the car and go.
Dandy and great value
this is a great IK for those who only get to paddle 15 to 20 days a year or less. white water capable, and no problem on flat water if you have some actual paddle skills. I've paddled the top models and most everything down to vinyl walmart toys, and the Star Raven is solid, reliable, easy to care for and dandy for most anything. The included carry bag and pump (with pressure gauge) is a plus. again, not the top of the line, but way above the middle mark and a fine value. We bought a Raven I and Raven II, and I can paddle the Raven II by myself easily on both river whitewater and flat lakes.
Decent raft
I thought this raft was pretty good. The manuerverbility of this raft was better then my tomcat. I also found the seats that it came with more comfortable then my other rafts. I found that the boat turned easily but if left to do it's own thing it would flip backwards my raft came with manufacturing defects and was returned due to my concern the material would split. I ended up sticking with the tomcat tandem as it's dual layer tubes offer more durability and the added length helps with big water stability. If you have the choice go for tomcat but this boat will work too if you can't get a tributary.
We love ours ... bought 2!
These are fantastic kayaks - absolutely love them! Be bought two tandems for our family of four. Very easy to inflate ... about 10 minutes if my husband and I are working together. About 5 minutes to deflate and pack up ... longer in areas where you need to check for invasive species. We bought them for swiftwater, but they have been great on both flatwater rivers and lakes as well. My boys have no problem jumping in and out of them out in open water. They are super stable, though the wind can carry them a bit on a windy day. The only complaint I have is the legroom for the back seat. We are still experimenting with how to situate the seats, but the places to fasten them limit it a bit. My sister’s have whitewater duckies that are a bit longer and slightly deeper, but I think these Star Raven 2’s are much more versatile for going between flatwater and swiftwater.
River rafting.
So i was actually quite impressed with this kayak, the quality is very well made. My only negative review is i have to buy a new seat because one of the tethers tore through the seat.
360's for days
This might be a good kayak for moving water, but not for still water! My husband and I excitedly took it to a mountain lake for its inaugural (and only) paddle. It inflated quickly and easily. The quality seemed good. The chairs were easy to set up and have nice pockets. Steering it, however, is impossible. After mustering every bit of teamwork we could to paddle in a straight line, we made it about 20 feet before veering, one way or the other, once we started to pick up any kind of speed. Not just turning, but completely turning around. We did so many 360's. We returned it in hopes of buying a different one from REI with a skeg, but, unfortunately, they don't carry that model anymore. TL; DR: If you are planning to kayak in lakes, make sure your kayak has a skeg.
Not a good flat water Kayak
I bought this after I spoke to Star. They said is was best in rivers but would do fine on lakes and bays. The build quality is great. My wife and I took it out to the lagoon for an afternoon paddle. We are both good paddlers but using the Raven II was horrible. We spent more time doing 360 or 180. I am returning this today. It is too bad because the size and sell draining is perfect.
