Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Best sleeping bag

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve used many different kinds of sleeping bags. Different ratings. I have a designated pair of wooly socks to wear every night when camping. I don’t need then with this sleeping bag. It’s the weirdest technology of some sorts,, but sleeping in this bag actually levels my body temp from head to toe. The coldest I’ve slept in is 41 in tent. It’s also so soft and cozy, who wouldn’t want to snuggle up in it for the night. My only complaint,,, I wish the womens colors came in longer sizes. I barely have long 5’10 to work for me being just under 6’ . That’s a personal problem though. I’ll be ordering some more for my kids.

My Experience

This will not be like any review you’ve ever read so brace yourself. I had a 10 degree Quest mummy bag in the back of my truck that I used to sleep in camper shell style. Three days ago I was sleeping in my truck, it was early morning, the weather had been bad all night, and a large tree branch broke off a big old tree that was hanging over and fell on my truck, totaling my entire vehicle including the camper shell. I had been in the sleeping bag when it happened and was rescued and am alive and well with a bruise, a scratch, and a fractured pelvis. Everyone around me says it’s a miracle I’m alive, but I am somehow convinced that this sleeping bag saved my life!!!! Thank you!

Just what I had hoped for

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The double zipper coupled with the roomy toe box allows one to open just the footwell of the bag and keep your feet comfortably out of the bag. Stayed quite comfortable on a 35 degree Adirondack night in May. Nice fabrics particularly on the inside of the bag plus the colors are sweet.

Bang for your Buck

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This bag’s quality and comfort exceeds expectations and for a synthetic bad packs very well. Difficult to compare to other bags at this price point so that said this bag is money very well spent.

Warm, short and compact.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Perfect for my 2-3 seasons needs, I’m a small and chilly person. 2 way zipper is ideal for my hot flashes! Happy with my not a non-american product of quality.
