If you have ever been sipping a margarita and thought “you know, the only thing this drink is missing is some tanning lotion,” this is for you. Another person that might like it is a person that wishes their margarita tasted more like a watered down pina colada and doesn’t like pina coladas. I mixed the ingredients based on the instructions. When my wife tastes it she slipped and asked if I’d followed the destructions, which I think was appropriate given the damage done to the tequila. Not all bad, though. There was alcohol in there.
Great, simple cocktails
These little packets mimic the flavors of sugar, orange, cherry & bitters. In essence, you can remove all those separate things from your pack, and still surprise your camp mates with a crafty cocktail out on the trail. For this one, add some water and bourbon & away you go! Great product, but a little pricey. Found a photo of one from a recent trip- definitely not Instagram-worthy.”, but you get the idea.
I wish that I could rate it a ZERO!
The only good things I can say is that the package is a measuring vessel (about 2 oz.) & they’re sold be REI. They were an impulse purchase that I now regret! We tried the margarita & old fashioned mixes, both were a waste of good tequila & bourbon. Don’t waste your money, HORRIBLE!!!!! Seriously!!! I would have dumped them if I didn’t want to waste good alcohol. You’ve been warned.
Do Not Buy!!! This is my warning.
Reviewing the Margarita and the Moscow Mule. Having read the wide range of reviews, we tried them at home not wanting to take their weight in our backpack if it turned out we did not like them. We went into this with an open mind. My husband says he will drink anything. I thought the low ratings were probably people who had a narrow range of acceptance. I stand corrected. I agree with the person who said 1 star is too many. We tried them a variety of ways to make sure we gave them a fair shot. We tried with a little less water than called for and then the correct compliment. We also tried adding more alcohol to see if it would hide the chemically perfumy flavors. And, we tried with ice though we probably won't have snow on our backpacking trip. They were terrible any way you drink them. I literally nearly threw up. We poured them down the drain. Then thinking that perhaps in the comfort of our home we had been overly critical, we decided to try our previous drink that we had liked while backpacking, a margarita made with crystal light (made with about 1/2 the called for water and taquilla). IT makes a very pleasant drink especially with ice. AND, that was in the comfort of our home. SO, save your money and get crystal light and enjoy. Also, to note, I rarely write reviews and usually when I do it is because they are so good and I want to make sure they get credit. This product is so bad that I felt I too had to warn people. DO NOT BUY.
Terrible
The concept earned the one star. These were awful. We tried the old fashioned but it was so bad we threw the remaining packets away. Save your money and bring powdered apple cider or hot chocolate if you need a mixer - or just drink it straight!
Terrible
Tried the old fashioned. It wasn't just, "not good". It was undrinkable. Save your money and just drink the alcohol straight. I cannot fathom how anybody would give this higher than 1 star. DO NOT BUY.
Tasted horrible and had an allergic reaction
I decided to give this product a try since I was going camping and I had some mescal with me, i figured a mescal bloody Mary would be delicious. Not only was the powder very artificial smelling and colored, but I do not think all of the ingredients were accurately labeled. I am not allergic to anything on the label, but after trying it, my throat started swelling and my eyes watered. I luckily had benadryl on hand and the reaction went down in about 30 minutes. I expect a possible allergic reaction from dozens of things in the outdoors, but never from an innocuous cocktail mixer.
Any Port in a Storm?
My advice to you is...if you're not going way into the backcountry and you can carry the extra weight, take a teeny tiny container of Luxardo and save the orange peels form lunch (you still have them, leave no trace right?) and add that to your bourbon and make yourself a real Old Fashioned in the woods. I mean this stuff is okay just like a dehydrated backpacker meal is at the end of a day when anything tastes good....... but remember straight bourbon isn't bad either, if you catch my drift. And according to the instructions, you need to shake it. So, you will either need to pack your backcountry cocktail shaker or empty your Nalgene bottle - or maybe you have filled that with ice, which of course would be brilliant!
This is supposed to taste like what?
I was excited about the prospect of having a bloody mary on a canoe trip! I had tried dehydrated tomato powder with added bloody mary spice in the past and the texture was too powdery. The Pocket Cocktail mix doesn't have a powdery texture - it just tastes bad, including an artificial taste, and not like a bloody mary even when good spices are added. I accidentally purchased two, and will just throw it away rather than pay 8.95 to return a 10 dollar item.
Disappointed
I love REI, and was hoping this would be a cool trip surprise. I didn’t think it would be amazing, but unfortunately it tasted terrible.
