Won't Shut Off
I've had the light for about 10 months and only used it in the fall of 2018 and spring of 2019. Never had any issues. I tried to use it this weekend for travel on a semi-busy roadway in Virginia but after having it on flash mode for about 10 seconds, it went to full on bright mode and I couldn't do anything to change it or shut it off. After returning from my ride, the battery died and I charged it back up but it was just off and wouldn't do anything else. About four hours later, the light just went on by itself and again, would not shut off. Annoying ... but I'm thankful that it happened now instead of after the warranty expired. REI customer service is great.
Bright light, but it won't turn off.
I needed a brighter light for winter biking after dark and purchased this for a 7 mile cabin trip. It worked great and provided the lumination I needed, but I couldn't get it to turn off. Eventually it either died or finally turned off. So I just turned it on to go for a ride tonight and have the same problem. I've watched the user guide videos and lock mode is definitely not my problem. I read another review for the 850 model with the same issue. I like the light otherwise, so I'll probably try to exchange it for the same model.
G-Shock Bike Light
After bouncing out of the bracket at 33 mph, the 650 was run over by more than just the 6 cars I saw hitting it. Scuffed and battered, it worked for 2 more years before the battery connection let go. Nite Rider reconnected the battery to the switch, replaced the shells and returned it in 4 days. The 650 works in all modes and does not interfere with Cateye Strava wireless cycling meters. The daylight flashing mode is especially helpful for being seen here in the bright tropical light do South Florida. I now put a rubber band around the tail of the light and the lock tab of the bracket. They have redesigned the bracket and the new one is much more secure. Nite Rider has terrific customer service.
Disfunctional
I've had two of these now: the first had the same problem that Ephy mentioned above - after a few months of working just fine suddenly it just wouldn't turn off. I returned it to REI for a replacement. The second one I got, after a summer's worth of little activity because of our late evening sun, suddenly decided not to turn on at all! It's hard to stand by a product that has failed twice in two different ways.
Longevity Questionable
After less than a year, won't hold a charge for more than about an hour and a half. And what was once four brightness settings suddenly is only three. I bought this in a set with a taillight, which stopped working entirely in about 7 months - won't light up at all, won't charge. I'm now wondering if this company's products are just generally inferior. What initially looked to be a good value maybe isn't over the long run.
stopped working, customer support doesn't respond
Great light for a 1.5-2 years of light commuting. However, it simply stopped working (giving odd color combos while charging and trying to turn on). I contacted NiteRider customer service, and they did not respond. Would not pay a premium for a premium company that doesn't stand by product.
Great Light for Commuting
I bought this light to make my New York City commute safer now that daylight savings time has ended. The salesperson recommended a 650 lumens unit as more than adequate for the urban environment, and I have to agree. It lights the road up well, and makes me very visible on the flash mode. As others have noted, the weak spot of this unit is the mount. It doesn't hold the light securely, and I ended up dropping it on the sidewalk. While the case is very strong, the light managed to land right on the bottom part where the mounting slots reside. One of the slots broke off, and now the light is even less secure. Other than that problem, I think the light is great for my needs.
great light, passable mounting system.
The light itself has been excellent. Has survived rain, snow, mud and quite a few drops on ice. very bright, excellent battery life, reasonable charging time. the beam pattern is a little too round for the road. the little flap that covers the charging port is kind of fiddly, but it's never fallen open. the mount, however, I have some gripes with. with the clamp fully tightened, the light (which is fairly heavy) vibrates and bounces around. it takes quite a few miles on rough ground for it to start pointing at the ground, but expect to be readjusting it at least once a week, probably more often if you frequently encounter rough roads or trails. I like the ability to adjust the aim of the light side to side though, and the quick detach mechanism has never come loose.
Only got to use it twice!
Installed it on my Giant Trance X 3 MTB and after the first ride noticed the light was loose off the stem and clipped it back on. On my 2nd ride while descending down a trail the light flew off literally! I was left with stem and the light nowhere in sight. What I'm I suppose to do go and return half the product?! 60 dollars down the drain. 1st product I've bought from REI that I've been unhappy with.
NiteRider 650 for helmet.
These lights are simply the best. Don’t skimp on lights. I use this on my helmet along with 1200s on the bike. Awesome combo and easy to charge and clip in. Nothing beats these lights, nothing.
