Quality is lower than previous versions
Previous versions of this garment had a soft touch fabric on the inside of the zipper for comfort against the skin. In this version, Patagonia omits the soft touch fabric such that the zipper is directly against the skin. It is uncomfortable, especially at the bottom of the zipper where it actually scratches and irritates the skin. At this price point, one would expect patagonia to have attention to detail and it is a big disappointment that this ill advised change was made. This garment is a base layer, and special care should be take to eliminate discomfort and irritation as had been done in the past. I will be returning the garment.
Pilled fabric day 1: expected more from Patagonia
Pilled fabric the first day of wearing. After less than six wears, fabric pilling substantially more than another brand's fleece that I bought around the same time and have worn the same number of times. The other brand: zero pilled fabric. This Patagonia Men's R1 Pullover... look at the pictures. Expected more from Patagonia.
A versatile and comfortable piece of gear
I didn’t know what to expect when I ordered the R1 half zip. What I got turned out to be one of the most versatile pieces of gear in my closet. I’ve been wearing it causally and for running. It is light enough that one doesn’t seem to get overheated, then combine it with a windbreaker, or vest and it becomes a great insulating layer. Sleeves are long enough to tuck one’s hands inside when running without gloves. The cut is trim and it looks good on its own when wearing it throughout the day. I will buy another in orange when it’s available again...that would be indispensable for a trail runner during hunting season.
I own Two R1's I like them so much.
I live in two of these all winter long for everything from dining out to hiking and cycling and cold homes. The black looks so good you can wear it for fine dining. One always travels with me in my plane carry-on. In order to get the true warmth insulation and benefit, they are meant to be worn tight. Not effective if worn loose like a sweat shirt. They are form fitted so may not be appropriate for everyone. I use a R1 Medium which is what I wear in all my shirts--order your regular shirt size. If you wear a Patagonia down sweater over the R1 with a polyester or model undershirt under the R1 you will be good for temps down to freezing. Don't use cotton anything with the R1.
Older versions were better!
I have owned many R1s over the years. Unfortunately, the poor reviews of the newest version are accurate. I typically wear a medium and it is smaller/tighter than years past. If you wear a shirt underneath, the sleeves bunch up and are difficult to get straight. The cuffs around the wrist are tight. It also feels tighter through the torso. Sizing up to a large makes the R1 too big. The material seems to not be as nice of quality and not as warm. Please bring back the older version!!
Disappointing Fit and Minor Decrease in Quality
The other reviews regarding the fit of the new pullover are absolutely correct. This is my third R1 and the other two are some of my favorite pieces of clothing. This one is getting returned. I am 5'10" and 175 with a moderately athletic build. My shoulders are not very wide, which makes it super surprising that the armpits on this thing are so incredibly tight. No matter what I do the material from whatever shirt I am wearing beneath this garment gets crumpled up in the armpit and leads to a sweaty underarm mess. Again, I say this as someone who normally never has this problem. It really is extremely tight in the chest, armpit, and arms. Additionally, there seem to be some minor downgrades in the quality of this batch/year or R1s. First, the wrist cuffs are not as stretchy as previous ones. This makes it difficult to push the sleeves up and have them stay up. This was not an issue with previous versions. Additionally, the bottom of the interior chest pocket is no longer stitched along the bottom to attach it to the rest of the garment. This means that when you put it on, your hand can catch in this opening. I personally find this to be an indicator of lack of attention to detail. Why would they change this when it previously was so perfect? All in all, this was an incredibly disappointing purchase. My other two R1s are my favorite pieces of clothing and I would certainly rate them 5 out of 5 starts, so to see these modifications and drop my rating to a 1 is sort of a bummer. Hopefully Patagonia reverts to the quality and design that so many have come to love. P.S. The recent version of the R1 hoody does not seem to have any of these issues. It's great! I wish that this was the same thing, just without the hood.
2019 design is simply wrong
I had the previous version of R1 pullover, and the new 2019 design is simply wrong. Other reviewers are right--upper arm, chest, and shoulder are strangely tight. If you go one size up, the width would be like a garbage bag. Strangely, the new 2019 *hoodie* fits great just as previous years!!! Can't they just make the pullover by getting rid of the hood from the hoodie?
This men’s pullover is woman approved!
My boyfriend has an R1 pullover that I have long been jealous of. I finally decided to get one only to find that not only was the women’s version continuously out of my size (M), but that it also doesn’t have a chest pocket! So I decided to get a men’s small and it’s one of the better choices I’ve made this year. I absolute love it. Fit is perfect, it keeps me nice and warm on ski days AND I got that pocket. This review won’t be helpful to any guys looking to buy this, but if you are a gal, size down one and enjoy :-)
Super small
The new one is really small and fits terrible, and is also very thin in fabric so I highly doubt it's as warm as prior versions. I have three of the past R1 pullovers because they fit so well in size large (I'm skinny and 6'5, and need long slim fit clothing). I would not recommend this product to anyone because of the new fit. If anyone from Patagonia reads this, please go back to the prior version because the new one is super bogus.
I hate falling right in th emiddle of a Med & Lrg.
Solid textile, I really like the fabrics qualities, breathability, and warmth. I bought a M (why don't people specify the size they bought? It really helps others based on the height weight info people provide) The cut is well a bit small for my frame and the large is a better fit through shoulders and around the chest but the torso is on the long side.
