Brompton Bicycles are fantastic. I could go on and on about how great they are BUT what people need to know when buying from REI is that these bikes are already 95% built! They are ready to rider straight from the box. All you have to do is install the seat...which is super easy to do. That's it!! DO NOT let REI bike technicians take the Brompton out of the box and start messing with it. There is nothing to mess with!!!! For example, Bromptons handle bars already come at a perfect angle, REI bike techs will most likely move them thinking that is will make for a better ride...It won't! So, do not let REI Bike techs mess with it. I love REI bike techs, but they do not know Bromptons. Again, if they need to have the bike up and running before they hand it over to you, then fine....let them help you install the bike seat because that is the ONLY thing that needs to be touched on this bike. I just wanted to impart this knowledge to you all. You are welcome....."The Brompton Master."

Rear shifter problems on BOTH.
Rod C
Rear shifting on BOTH bikes have issues. Was assured they had to take both apart to assemble and tune. Neither were tuned. Seems like "for show". Both bikes had rear shifter issues. One loosened up and a did a slight adjustment. The other bike I could not get to work. The cable tightening nut at the rear hub had loosened and the cable wires frayed so 2 of the wires in the cable bundle broke with one reaching into the rear pulley attached to the mainstay. For such an expensive bike, that seems unacceptable. If I cannot resolve, I will return BOTH because they were meant to be a set in the RV / airplane.

Great travel bike

What a great bike. It folds up quick and is very compact. There is a little learning curve with the shifters but they work great. Just try minimize hard pedal loads when shifting the right shifter. The left shifter shifts fine under higher torque. I recommend updating the saddle if your butt hurts while riding.

A high quality folding bike

Arguably one of the highest-quality bikes on the market that can fit into so many small spaces. Steel frame rides smoothly. The 6 speed drivetrain is quite different than most other bikes being that it's a 2x3, but all on the rear wheel/hub. I think most folks that ride "regular" size bikes will be surprised at how fast this thing can go despite it's tiny 16 inch wheels. The folding and unfolding process is a lot faster than most other folding bike brands (about 20 seconds or less once you get the hang of it). The bike is running in great shape after the first 150ish miles on flat roads, hilly roads, and low-quality bumpy roads. Bromptons have a reputation for lasting a lifetime. The little wheels on rear rack allow the bike to roll when folded for "shopping cart mode" or for easily rolling the folded bike under a table or desk. One of the main things that drew me to this bike is the ease of multi-modal travel (planes, trains, and automobiles). I am looking forward to one day taking this bike on an airplane as a carry on item! If you are considering getting a Brompton, definitely check out the manufacturer website and watch some online videos and tutorials because there are quite a few configurations available. I just got lucky that REI had the color and configuration I was wanting (M6R). Thank you REI! I hope that if REI decides to become more into carrying Bromptons, that they also begin to carry the many accessories and bags that go along with it.

Go to bike for travel with limited space

I purchased the Brampton M6R two years ago and it has been proved itself as an integral travel companion many times over. Before COVID I would take it in my work car or train to meetings and the bike was invaluable. I am 6-3 and I purchased the telescoping seat post to give me a better riding position. This was a game changer to get the proper fit. I also replaced the stock chain ring with a smaller sprocket to allow for better climbing since I live and often travel to hilly areas. I also purchased the Brompton travel bag that attaches to the headset. Another travel game changer since it doesn’t require special handling on a train or plane. Carry on please!

Cadillac of folding bikes. Period.

Amazing bike. Could not be happier. I have always wanted a brompton so when I saw that REI was selling them, I jumped right on it. Yes, the price is quite high on these BUT this is a high quality bike. It is worth every single penny. It rides like a dream and folds down to a very tiny and light size. Hand made in London and put through all kinds of tests. Bike already comes 90 percent assembled so there is no wait time to get it assembled. I have other folding bikes like Dahon, just to name one, but the Brompton is the best....hands down.

Amazing ride for such a small bike

Bought the Brompton in order to commute 3.5 miles to work and wanted an option where I could store the bike in the office under a desk. Really satisfied with the products: an incredibly zippy ride and folds very easily and quickly once you get the hang of it. However, the bike itself is not light and carrying it can be awkward. Would recommend if the ultimate distance you need to carry it is short and not up/down a lot of stairs. Helped by the fact that when folded it can be rolled via the set of wheels above the rear wheel (hence the R). 5'11" and the M configuration is comfortable.

Very versatile

My wife and I each bought a Brompton M6R bicycle. We can easily fit the two of them in the trunk of our Ford Escape and still have room for luggage. Their small profile also means they don't take up as much room in the garage when stored. The bikes handle well and the gearing seems sufficient for most of the terrain around my town outside of Washington, DC. I like the more upright position of the M handlebar. The M bar doesn't create that strain in the back of the neck one gets when riding a traditional 10-speed. I bought a used Metro Bag from REI as well and it seems to have enough capacity and pockets for most things.. I have ridden to the grocery store and used the bike+ bag as a small shopping cart as well. It didn't seem to phase anyone. I would consider buying Brompton's tote bag as well if it wasn't in that ugly olive green colour.

Best bike for the suburbs

Although advertised as a city bike, we love our Bromptons in the suburbs! Travels easliy in the trunk of my coupe. Have it hitched to a Burley Honey Bee kids trailer and it’s a perfect match! Great feeling ride. The front bag is a must, but there are lots of choices. Also get yourself some lights, Brompton OEM lights are awesome too. Overall, this bike feels like a larger bike in the footprint of a small carryon. (Lightweight too).
