Fun tool to use for backpacking or few people
6 years ago
As a Ranger for The Dyrt I sometimes am provided products to use and review. This trip we used and reviewed a product called Grub Stick. It is a telescoping stick with interchangeable attachments. There are three different packages you can order. Basically, there is a small, medium and large package. The small is the basic with the stick, hotdog fork, smore cage and the tool to open the cage while hot. The medium includes two sticks, two hotdog forks, smore cage, hamburger cage, silicone hotpad, tool to open cages, bacon clip and the small and large grub tubes. The master kit comes with two of everything except the tool and bacon clip.
I read some reviews on this product and some of them were not too good so I really didn’t know what to expect. However, I was pleasantly surprised. We started with using the burger attachment however we roasted pineapple slices and peach halves. Oh boy, were they delicious! I thought it worked perfectly for what we were trying to accomplish. The tool is very simple to operate to open the cages. The silicone handle really gives you a good grip so you don’t slip and burn your hand on the hot cage. Next, we made the pizza tube recipe on the grub sticks website. We took pizza dough and wrapped it around the large grub tube. We cooked it over the fire until it was golden brown and it easily slipped off of the tube. Our string cheese was already softened so we did not use the hotdog attachment to soften as directed on the website. Next, we added pizza sauce and dug in. They were delicious! I can’t wait to try cinnamon rolls or crescent rolls next time! After we ate dinner we made smores. We got out the smore cage and I will tell you folks, this was the one attachment I was not sure I was going to like. We built our smores and closed the cage and over the fire it went. You definitely have to rotate it and make sure you get your marshmallow toasted. Otherwise, if you don’t you will just have a burnt graham cracker and non-toasted marshmallow and hard chocolate. Nobody wants that. I also wasn’t sure if I would like my graham cracker toasted. Well folks, I was completely wrong. They. Were. Awesome! We also toasted some marshmallows using the fork and didn’t have any problem with them sliding off. We let the centers of the marshmallows cool and collapse and then added some Irish Cream. I wasn’t a big fan as you will see in my pictures but everyone else enjoyed them. I absolutely cannot wait to use this again and try different recipes.
Pros:
Silicone handled tools made them extremely easy to handle and use.
All kits come with a handy carrying bag so you don’t lose all of the pieces.
The attachments were very easy to change out and use.
The telescoping feature is great. It is a thicker pole also, not thin like some of the others I have bought in the past.
Cages can be used for multiple purposes.
The grub tubes were a great way to be able to “bake” without using a dutch oven.
Cleaned up nicely after using.
This is the perfect set for cooking if you are a single person or a couple who are backpacking.
Cons:
Unless you have multiple grub sticks it would take forever to cook for a lot of people. This worked great to make some appetizers and desserts however I couldn’t imagine cooking a full meal for a group of people.
The bacon clip should be able to handle a little thicker bacon.
I did not have any problem with this but according to other reviews some people had issues with the attachment screw breaking.
I don’t have too many bad things to say about this product. I really was skeptical at first but I am now a believer. I had so much fun using this and I can’t wait to do it again.

Well-Made Product, Creativity Required

TELESCOPING ROD: The telescoping rod is very well-made. Super easy to maneuver the rod in and out and change add-ons.
GRUBFORK: 5 out of 5. Cooking our Trader Joe’s sausage on the Grub fork was a breeze. I love cooking 2 at once, and removing them from the fork was as easy as wrapping the bun around the link and pulling them off. Super clean and easy.
GRUBCAGE: 3 out of 5. We used the grub cage to test out making s’mores. By premaking the s’more sandwich and clamping it in the cage, you avoid mess. But unfortunately what happens is that the graham cracker gets crisped/burned while the marshmallow remains partially cooked inside the sandwich. Still tasty and warm, but not the same gooey mouthfeel you get when roasting a marshmallow straight over the fire. However, you can use the grubcage to cook a lot more than s'mores. I'm looking forward to roasting brussel sprouts or other veggies in the convenient cage.
GRUBPOCKET: 4 out of 5. We wrapped some peppered turkey bacon around the grub pocket and loved the results. The clamp to keep the bacon in place worked for the most part, but fell off a couple of times, mostly because the turkey bacon wasn’t very thick. Makes nice and crispy bacon, but you can only cook one piece at a time.
I really enjoyed using the Grubstick and look forward to using the BurgCage for burger patties. I will get a LOT of use out of the GrubFork. Overall, a well made product of quality material and craftsmanship. Creativity is encouraged in crafting unique recipes and making the most efficient use out of the add-ons.

Great addition to my camp kitchen
I really enjoyed using the various Grub stick tools included in the kit (and in a great carrying bag) on a recent camping trip. The telescope was smooth and the handle has a nice grip. The included release tool was helpful to clean off some bacon that stuck to the forks, and the hot pad/gripper was nice when working with the hot end of the tool. I was not sure the Grub tube would work for baking bread so I was pleasantly surprised when my bread baked all the way though. This will be a permanent addition to my camp kitchen.

Great camping tools
As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I occasionally get to test products. At this campground, I tested the Grubstick Deluxe Kit. This collection of camping cooking utensils and accessories is fun and functional for the entire family. I love the compact 30” collapsible, stainless steel, telescope stick, with the rubber handle. It’s sturdy, easy to clean, and comfortable to hold.
The Grubfork is awesome. It is strong enough to hold two hotdogs or marshmallows.
The Grubcage is good for toasted s’mores (your graham cracker will get toasted or burned if you aren’t careful). It’s square and can hold wider items than the round Grubcage which is meant for burgers and patties. Both can hold items such as veggies, fruit, and bread or English muffins. The release tool takes a bit of getting used to operating while holding your Grubstick
I would buy a ton of the handles and sticks to give as gifts but having to buy everything by the package is way too expensive. The good news is that I’ve heard that Grubstick is going to start selling individual pieces - hopefully, this is true.
The Grubpocket is the size and shape of a marshmallow. We used this to create bacon pockets and it worked pretty well (can’t go wrong with bacon!). The bacon clip is tough to operate. It needs to be tight to hold the bacon in-place but, that also means that it is hard to squeeze open wide enough to go around tick cut bacon.
The Grubtube is a steel cylander that you can wrap the pastry around. I forgot the pastry but can’t wait to try out a few recipes and start to create our own!
All in all, I love that the Grubstick products have given me a spark to rethink my camping meals!
Pros:
Rubber handle
Telescopic and collapsible to 30”
Stainless steel and easy to clean
Makes me want to cook more creatively
Cons:
The bacon clip is really hard to open.
The grabber is good in theory and useless in reality. Falls off your fingers unless your fingers are tilted upward.
The packages are pricey
Overall, I give the Grub Stick and Grubfork 5 stars and the accessories 3.5 stars.

My Son Loved Cooking With The Grubstick
What a fun way to cook over a campfire! In my kit I received two telescopic poles which have well made attachments such as the Grubcage, Grubfork, Burgcage, and Grubtube that attach to the end of the telescopic poles. We used the Burgcage for supper and it made awesome burgers. They had that perfect campfire flavor. My son enjoyed getting to cook his own food rather than waiting for dad to cook it on the grill. The handles are very comfortable to hold, and they were just the right size for my son’s smaller hands. The whole time he was using it, I kept hearing wows. It’s great when a company makes a camping product that engages children in cooking. The Grubstick does just that.
The Deluxe Kit also came with special grips like the finger grabber and the hot pad to help open and close the cages and other attachments. You can really tell that the makers of the Grubstick thought of everything when they were designing this.
One of the things that was really fun was the Grub Cage. It left me wondering, “where have you been all my life?” Instead of building the S’more AFTER roasting the marshmallow on a stick, you build it in the cage and toast the whole thing. I think this is the way the S’more was always meant to be.
For breakfast, we used the Grubtube and wrapped it with bacon and croissant rolls. It was as good as it sounds. As I was cooking, I kept thinking of other things that could be cooked over the fire using this kit. I’m excited to have it in my cooking kit now, and I see us using this quite often especially on those winter camping trips when we want to stay close to the fire.
Overall, this is a great product for engaging kids in camping. The Grubstick will allow my kids to come up with their own recipes, put them together on their own, and then try them out on the fire. They love being a part of the cooking part of camping, and the Grubstick is the perfect tool for this.
I did have an issue with one of the telescopic handles. After cooking three burgers, one of the telescopic handles broke. I contacted the customer service center, and they went above my expectations to not only replace it but to help me understand their product even more. Most people expect things to be returned with “no questions asked,” but this isn’t how Grubsitck operates. They asked for pictures and a description of the failure so they can make sure their product gets better and better. I wouldn’t hesitate at all to order more from this company. It’s great when people not only believe in their product but also stand by it and are always looking for ways to improve it. They sent a replacement immediately, and I can’t wait to get this back out in the field.

Wow. Wow. WOW. This set is a GAME CHANGER for campfire cooking. We have been using dinky little forks forever and having to buy new ones every few trips because they get bent out of shape or burned up. This kit will last you FOREVER. They are so well made!
This kit includes two grippy telescoping handles, and then a ton of accessories (2 fork toppers, a cage for whole S’mores, a cage for burgers, a small metal rod to make bacon cups, and a large metal rod to cook dough). There are also 4 other accessories, like hot pags and cage openers that are thoughtful additions. AND they come in their own mini duffel bag!
My friends were seriously blown away when they saw our set and were asking so many questions about it. My favorite part was the dough rod, because we made delicious campfire cinnamon-sugar crescent roll cylinders!!
5 Stars for GrubStick, can’t wait to try out new recipes!

Adds a lot more camping fun - great product
6 years ago
Received the Grub Stick several weeks ago and have used it on several outings since. Have to say this is just fun to use. Cooking over a fire is always great fun and having the Grub Stick just gives you way more options for fire cooking fun. It was a blast coming up with ideas to try. We really likes the bacon bowl feature, but a hint on using it “don't use thick cut bacon” it takes to long to cook and is hard to get the bacon clip over it. We have cooked up hot dogs, sausages, made eclairs, S'mores, Chocolate chip cookie s'mores, Biscuits, biscuit s'mores, Bacon bowls stuffed with just about anything we could find. The big down fall of the Grub Stick is that we didn't have enough of them and waiting for someone to finish was a downier, especially when you had a new idea you wanted to try.

Camping with the Grub Stick
I am a Ranger for the Dyrt and tried this product on a recent camp out. I loved how well it held up to multiple use. I had the 4 piece and the 13 piece and they interchanged very well. We cooked hot dogs and smores' with them on this trip. On a past trip with a friends set I have also cooked bacon and pastry on the tubes. Very versatile. The 4 piece would be perfect for one persona and for backpacking. The 13 piece is good for a small family. Or buy multiple and combine them since they are versatile for a larger group.
Pro: Held up well and pack into their respective bags with ease. The four piece works great for one person. Love how versatile they are with different sets since the telescopic poles are the same from set to set.
Con: Would love to be able to buy just a bunch of telescopic poles and gubforks for large groups. (I hear that is coming though, so hope its true.)
Can't wait to use these again with my nephews cooking over the open fire. By the way the grub stick website has lots of recipes to use with their sets.

Ingenuitive Piece of Camping Equipment!
The first thing we thought when we got our kit was there's a ton of attachments! We think the Deluxe Kit is the best option for testing the waters as it includes one of each of their unique roasting tools. The attachments that intrigued us most was the Grubtube and Grubpocket. They allowed us to make freshly roasted bread quick and easily! We found that keeping the bread fairly thin got the best golden brown while baking it all the way through. We tested both of these and and the prongs but not the cages. While we didn't test the cages we expect them to perform just as well given they are very robust. On top of all of these gadgets, the deluxe kit also comes with a carrying bag to store it all!
The only thing we thought could be improved on the Grubstick was the telescoping portion of the handle itself. I almost pulled 2 different sections apart from each other without much force and when there was a decent load on the end the whole rod would bend. We just shortened the rod by one section and that seemed to work alright.
In closing we thought the grubstick was a fantastic ingenuitive piece of camping equipment. It's sure to expand the number and variety of camping meals you'll be able to prepare! And if you're looking for a kit for the whole family there's the GrubStick Master Kit.

fun to use
I like that the kit comes with 2 handles, as it allows both my husband and I to cook at the same time. We cooked several meals - hot dogs on the forks, bell peppers in the grubcage, pinapple rings in the burgcage, marshmallows on the forks, s’mores in the grubcage, crescent roll dough on both the grubpocket and the grubtube, and our favorite, barbecue tempeh in the burgcage. For those unfamiliar, tempeh is a fermented soybean patty that you can marinate and cook using countless methods. I steamed the tempeh for 10 minutes at home before our trip, and put it in a ziplock bag with barbecue sauce (homemade or store bought - whichever you prefer). We then cooked it over the fire using the burgcage for about 5 minutes on each side and it was absolutely delicious! Our other favorites were the pineapple rings and the bell peppers Cooking the whole s’more, which Grub Stick has demonstrated on their Instagram, didn’t work out so well - the cracker burned, the chocolate melted everywhere, and the marshmallow didn’t roast. I recommend using the for attachment to roast marshmallows the old fashion way. The only negative experience we had was with the burgcage - after a few uses the clasp where the cage closes became too loose, and we sadly lost a pineapple ring. I tried to squeeze it tight again, but I think it will require pliers. We love our Grub Stick and definitely recommend it. It’s super lightweight and portable. I look forward to using it on future campouts!
