Great for Minimalist Running
I've been wearing the Vibram Furoshiki shoes for my winter running and I have been interested (for a while) in the Luna Sandal designed for running. It was a toss-up between the Bedrocks and the Luna's. Unlike the Luna, I couldn't find any information on whether or not the Bedrock was made/designed for running, even after contacting the company (I didn't receive a reply). However, I read many review and it appeared the Cairn would be perfect. I just did a 5 mile run in them from pavement to trail straight out of the box and they were fantastic. a little stiff but I still need to break them in. I think this is a great minimalist shoe for a run or a hike!
Meh- for this price, get something else
I love a good outdoor sandal and I was excited to get a pair of Bedrocks. Had them a few weeks, wore them on the Narrows and they did well. But the top straps bother the top of my feet if I wear them too long. The quality is just ok- my puppy bit at them on my feet and severed the little rope holding them together in a single bite. Customer service was just ok and getting them repaired is a pain. For $100+, I am pretty unimpressed. I wore my Chacos for a whole weekend of fun in the Smokeys this past weekend (rafting, hiking, Dollywood rollercoasters!) and was reminded why they will remain my go-to faves.
Best sandals ever!!
These sandals are the most comfortable shoes / sandals that I have ever owned. I wore them non-stop for six months of travel through Asia and continue to wear them now that I am home where ever I go. I even do long hikes in them and they perform well on uphills and downhills. Even in hot weather, I never get rubbing or blisters. After wearing them at least 5 days a week and putting 6-8 miles a day on them for the last year, the soles have worn down (the webbing is still strong) but Bedrock will actually resole them for a reasonable price so I'm going to ship them out for repair soon, but not until I get a second pair because I can't imagine living without these sandals.
Only shoes I need!
So I work at an outdoor adventure camp where we guide kids on rock climbing and whitewater rafting. The general consensus was that “Chaco is king” but I was so annoyed by how heavy chaco’s are. I started looking for a sandal I could run in, look no further, I am obsessed with how comfortable and lightweight these are. I wear them everywhere. Seriously, the only shoe I like wearing. And I’m slowly convincing the rest of the staff I work with that Bedrocks are amazing! Also, the rubber sole is in very sticky and makes me feel safe and secure no matter what I’m walking on!
Wow
I have picky feet. Slightly wide, bunion on one foot, low arches, and just in general I find it hard to find something I truly feel comfortable in. I've tried and tried to make Chacos work for me, but they just aren't meant for my feet. Their arch hurts and after wearing them a while I experience ongoing back and joint pain. Same with Birkenstocks. I just don't need that arch! Anyway, these are just a dream to wear. The sole is sturdy but flexible. The material is simple and not scratchy or irritating. The sizing does run a bit small / short. I'm normally a 7-7.5, but I'm a women's 8 in these for sure. I'm not an avid hiker and hard core anything (I don't want to be a poser on here!)! I'm just a mom with a bunch of kids looking for a good outdoor sandal for camping, family hikes, and all around good summer shoe. I think I've finally found it. :)
Dig em
I've tried a few minimalist pairs of sandals & while they always seemed great in concept, few seemed to hold up or perform well. Versions I tried with thinner soles were too floppy & the droop of the material would make me trip on it. These are a little thick for "barefoot" sandals, but I like the flatness of the footbed at least. The traction has been good & the straps are secure and comfortable. I am exactly a 9 when measured & these fit perfectly in a 9. I much prefer these sandals over my old (3x resoled) Chaco z2's (which are size 9W.)
Ok, a few things...
First off! I have never owned Chacos so I'm not gonna input any Chacos discourse, haha. I have these in women's size 8 in black, and right out of the box I loved how comfortable they were. They seem a little clunky but when I put them on they felt very light. The straps do need some getting use to on the top of your feet but I really enjoy how adjustable they are. Only thing that makes these 4 stars instead of 5 is that, at least for the pair that I bought through REI, seem to be made for narrow feet so if you have wider feet like mine, these may look like they hang off a little. Despite that, I'm going to keep them because I just discovered that they are a local Berkeley brand, which is cool! I can't wait to trek around in Zion with these on once I break them in some more!
Sandals are amazing but why did REI gender them?
Love these sandals, I've gone on long hikes and multi-week bike tours with these. However, Bedrock does not distinguish between men's and women's sandals, it seems pretty ridiculous that REI has chosen to do so based on color alone. It's 2018, y'all.
Sturdy all-purpose sandals
I purchased a pair of the Bedrock Cairn sandals in April of 2020. At this point, they probably have a few hundred miles on them. I have done 14+ mile runs in them, hiked all over the Cascades in snow and mud, and taken them backpacking clipped to the outside of my pack. Structurally, they have withstood everything I have thrown at them. This is a fantastic pair of sandals if you want a minimalist alternative to Chacos. When I review shoes, I think it is important to mention that I have been using minimalist (zero heel-to-toe drop/low-structure) footwear for years. My feet are adapted to running around without help. While these sandals tolerate rugged hikes over rough terrain without complaint, your feet might not, because these sandals are essentially flat strips of quality rubber with no arch support what-so-ever. Also: these are still sandals. Ideally, you should always wear toe protection in rough, steep conditions no matter how sure-footed you are. Adventure wisely. That point aside, the one condition I have encountered in which these sandals did not hold up perfectly was steep trail with slick mud. The sole traction is as good as can be expected in mud, but at a certain point your own foot begins to slip around atop the sole and the straps, no matter how tight, are not enough to keep your foot centred. I have finished each hike where I encountered this, but the constant sliding around is annoying and requires extra attention. I have done plenty of “dirty” hikes and had no problem, however. Normally I wear a size 8 or 8.5. After looking at reviews, I got the size 9 and it fit perfectly. There is something lovely and refreshing about being able to remove your sandals, splash the leftover water from your Nalgene on your legs, and climb into your car with clean feet while the rest of your hiking companions have aching, sweaty boot feet to deal with! I highly recommend these robust, well-crafted sandals.
Wide feet womxn, these are for us.
These have been used these walk around Boston, cycle (pedals without straps or a cage), and worn to work where I stand 8+ hours a day. They are light and have a firm cushion with a barefoot-ish feel. The foot bed and sole come in at 14mm. Over all these are a great everyday sandal that I would feel confident taking out on the trail that has minimal wet crossings. The traction would do fine with mud, but not great on a slick boulder. I'm already planning on getting the 3D Pro II with the extra-sticky Vibram Megagrip outsole for those wet adventures. Sizing: These sandals are Unisex sizing. I printed out the sizing guide template on the Bedrock's site for an accurate fit, I suggest that you do the same. Normally I'm a men's 7.5-8/women's 9.5-10 D Width or 26cm. With bunions and morton's toe I face issues with toe box shape and width along the ball of my foot. I purchased a M8/W9 size and they are just long enough for my foot. They measure 26cm exactly. I have a 1/2cm space in the front with my 'big foot' and 1cm spacing on the other. This works perfect for me. Bottom line: They look good, feel good, and they can be resoled. Spend the extra 15-20 bucks and get the Pro line if you want to use them in wet conditions.
