The Salomon Odyssey Pro fit was perfect out of the box. No break in required, no hot spots and no blisters after two days of rugged hiking on steep slick rock in the high desert of Arizona. The standard athletic shoe laces are welcome because it allows you to change the lacing pattern based on the terrain. These shoes are very well cushioned and yet extremely flexible, with excellent traction on steep rocky terrain including slick rock. They held up very well to the abrasive nature of high desert landscapes of the southwest, including the dreaded "goat heads", prickly pears and everything else that tries to poke, puncture, slice, or cheese grate your gear in the desert! The ventilation is sufficient for hot dry environments. The only downside to these shoes is that they lack some lateral stiffness found in other light hikers. But if you are an experienced and fit hiker I suspect this will be a non-issue, and the lightweight of these shoes does more than compensate for this slight. During the hikes I carried a dayback with 3-liters of water, extra clothes, first-aid and survival kit, food, headlamp, phone, deck of cards and a knife. The shoes easily handled the extra weight and I suspect they would also do well carrying an overnight backpack with sleeping bag, pad and shelter. Overall, I was very impressed with these shoes, having the fit and feel of an athletic shoe with the durability of a standard light hiker was welcome in this terrain!! The fit and finish with the standard ortholite insole makes these shoes very comfortable to wear on long day hikes.

Great looking sneaker, not a serious trail option.

Out of the box, these shoes look really nice. I got the Navy/Flame color. The Blue is very dark (almost black) and the flame is orange. They would not look out of place at my casual work place or in town after a day of hiking. They fit true to size and fit my foot well. As I laced them up, one thing that stood out was actually the laces. They're flat and coated in a light wax it seems. They felt really durable. I've done many backpacking trips and a lot of day hikes. Although I've only ever had one lace break on me it was a major pain. Shoes are lightweight and stable. I've never worn a pair of Solomon shoes before so really did not know what to expect. I strapped them on and hit the trail with no break in period. After a 12.5 mile hike with 10 pounds or so on my back, they felt really good. It was about 80 degrees on a sunny day and I was on a damp mostly dirt/sand trail. No hot spots and feet were dry and comfortable. They felt sturdy and the soles managed the wet spots in the trail very well. The one opportunity I had to scramble down a boulder they stuck to the surface very well. The soles are thick enough that I did not feel the stones and roots as I stepped through the most underdeveloped areas. Toward the end of the day, the heel of the shoe was irritating my achilles pretty badly. The next day it was bad enough that I couldn't bear to have them on. The heel is high and almost inset somehow so not sure breaking them in will help. In the end, they're too uncomfortable to recommend for any serious hike or backpacking trip.

Excellent for Fast and Light Hiking

This shoe is nice and light for hiking / backpacking. Light shoes are nice because they save evergy of the course of a long day, They also gripped surprisingly well on wet rocks and sandstone (better than i thought it would). I also liked that the shoe breathed well but did not allow rocks and gravel through the material. These will definitly join me on future backpacking / hiking trips. I wore these on an overnight backpack (15 miles, 28 lbs pack) and 2 long day hikes (10 miles each) before writing the review. Also im a pretty big large guy and these had plenty of support for me. I would buy these again and would recommend them to others.

Light and versatile

First of all I have to say that I have been using trail running shoes for hiking almost exclusively for more than a decade now...any comparisons made in this review will be against trail running shoes, not the traditional heavy duty hiking shoes/boots. Size/fit: I have a Morton's toe and wear size 13, so finding well fitting and comfortable shoes is often challenging. Salomon Odyssey Pro shoes were suprisingly comfortable out of the box and had a very short (a couple of hours) break-in period. However, the overall fit of the shoe is closer to what one would would expect from a gym/track running shoe than an outdoor focused one. This was not an issue on flat and uphill terrain but became more noticeable on downhill slopes when the foot inevitably slides a bit forward. Normally, I would expect some wiggle room for toes from an outdoors shoe in my size right out of the box, but it is possible that the shoe will mold around my foot given a few more outings. Performance/Characteristics: Salomon shoes weight virtually the same as my go-to trail runners but the weight seems to be distributed better so they feel lighter on my feet...always a plus. The aggressive sole pattern works very well on a variety of surfaces. Excellent grip on dirt/gravel/mud provided sure footing in both running and hiking modes. Grip on rocky/granite slab surfaces rivals that of my favorite trail runners and allowed me to walk up and down 30-35 degree slopes without slipping. The mileage on this pair is low, and it's still too early to tell but after taking them out for a few laps, the sole shows no sign of wear and tear despite the abuse.

A Step in a Comfortable Direction

The shoes, overall, are lightweight yet rigid enough to provide great support. My feet didn't feel very much through the shoes when hiking on sharp rocks. That being said, you can still slightly feel the rocks through the bottom of the shoe, at least more than if you were use an actual hiking boot. That makes sense given how much lighter weight the odyssey is compared to a hiking boot. The laces are a little bit stretchy and so the shoe felt loose after a bit if I tied them normally. I found that I had to tie them tighter than comfortable initially and they would get to a happy place eventually. That or retie when they felt loose. The tongue is gusseted almost all the way to the top, so that should help to keep things out of the shoe, especially if you employ some light gaiters. The tread pattern of the shoes gave them a great grip and gave me a feeling of security while I was traversing steep and slippery hillsides. I was hoping with a name like "Ortholite" the stock insoles were going to be great, but they were, like most stock insoles, adequate at best. That being said, I don't think I have ever found a shoe that came with phenomenal insoles. On sizing, I am usually either a 12.5 or 13 and I found the 13 to be a bit larger than I would normally use. I was considering exchange, but went on a hike first and found that after a few miles, my foot had swelled some and the shoe fit very well. So I would recommend going larger rather than smaller, if you are between sizes. Quick notes: The shoe was showing some signs of wear after ~11 mi, see photo. This is the main thing that stopped me from giving them 5 stars. Also, I didn't experience this, but I can see sunlight through the mesh on the upper of the shoe, so it is likely that fine sand would be able to enter the shoe through the mesh. On the plus side though, you know they are breathable!

Light, comfortable hiking shoes.

This shoe is light and has a comfortable toe box. I was initially concerned about its durability given how light it is. However, it held up fine during my week long trip in the Sierras that included a 3 day backpacking trip and a 22mi day hike up Mt. Whitney. The tread pattern is unique (it looked a giant peanut in the sand) and grip was fine on dry granite. However, there was some slippage on wet rocks. I also did not develop blisters during this trip. Which is surprising since I normally get one on my toes when doing multiday trips.

Excellent light weight hiking shoe

Put these shoes on right after receiving them in the mail and they fit nicely and were very comfortable right out of the box. Wore them on a pack trip without breaking them in and had no issues with comfort other than they seemed a little loose on the ankles. Even feeling a little loose there were no issues with blisters. The shoe provided great support both on and off the trail as there was quite a bit of cross country walking exploring areas off of the trail that happened in the two days of using them in the mountains. The treat actually surprised me as to how well it worked to provide traction while both on and off of the trail, especially early in the morning when the ground was covered in dew. I look forward to continually using these on future trips.

PCT Thru Hiker! 2200 miles on two pairs.

I bought this shoe for my PCT thru hike and got 1,100 miles on both pairs of shoes! Never broke them in, hot the trail right out of the box and never got a blister in them. My new go to hiking shoe. Never worn a more comfortable shoe thru hiking with so much support. The inner material is a bit soft so it does wear pretty quick but duck tape solves everything.

heel preasure

Lots of pressure on my heels produced blisters on both feet. There appears to be too much forward lean in the heel cup. This shoes seems large volume to me, so be aware of that as well.

Not as good as I had hoped

I want to start this review by stating that I find shoes and backpacks to be among the most challenging products to review because so much is based on individual fit and personal preference. With that said, there are generally two factors I look for when I review shoes (other than fit and feel): soles and heels. The soles in the Odyssey shoes are well cushioned. I wore these across some bumpy terrain covered with sticks, rocks, and logs, and the cushioned soles frequently served to fill in the gaps in the terrain, meaning that as far as my feet were concerned, I was walking on flat footpaths. Really comfortable. The reason I gave these shoes only three stars, however, was due to the heel support, which is stiff (good for a hiking shoe) but sits higher than expected due to the thick cushioning in the sole. As a result, rather than supporting my heel this stuff support ended up scraping the back of my ankle (just below my achilles). By the end of a short hike, I ended up with blisters on both ankles from the top of this stiff support rubbing against the tops of my heels. I think a simple redesign of the back/heel support on this shoe would go a long way toward eliminating this problem, and I would gladly take another look after such a redesign were accomplished. Until then, however, I cannot recommend these shoes because of the painful blisters they gave me.
