I've had this jacket for roughly 8 months. Primarily used for ski touring. Also used once for mountain biking. Breathability is great and the jacket is lightweight and packs small. The result of those pros is that it is very thin and fragile. I have already put three large tears in about 20 days of use from ski touring. Also holds onto dirt. Washed multiple times with specific cleaner to remove dirt without any luck at all. Just washed away the waterproof coating... Great jacket overall, but definitely not for ski touring. I had a previous OR shell that was made with Gore-tex Active - also a lightweight shell. Lasted 4 years of heavy use without a single tear.
This jacket is out of this world! (sorry about the pun). I wore it for 3 days of ice climbing in Hyalite Canyon, and didn't take it off all day. It's super breathable and has great stretch, I never felt restricted by the jacket. Even when I got a little sweaty climbing in the sun, I was totally dry a couple of minutes after lower off of the climb. I think the breathability of the jacket might have only one down side, it seems to hold on to sweat smells, and the hood could be a little bit larger to accommodate a hemet better. But don't let those 2 things deter you from this jacket, if you had to have only 1 hard shell, this is it.
Impressively waterproof! Testing - I stood in the shower with this jacket and my rain paints for 10 minutes, wearing dry cotton underneath. I let the shower jet pound into the front zipper and pocket zipper. When I inspected the cotton garments, they were totally dry which impressed me. Then I took the zipped jacket into the kitchen and sprayed the front zipper heavily for several minutes - it was totally dry inside afterwards. I really like the various features of the jacket, such as the hood adjustment options. Sizing - I'm 5'11" and am glad I bought a large. I like a rain jacket which reaches partway over my hands and gives good coverage below the waist.
This jacket feels like it's solidly built, but the fit is so odd. I am 6ft 185lbs athletically built and initially bought the medium based on other OR products I own (Ferrosi hoodie specifically). But the waist was so tight that it was hard to get the zipper started. The rest of the fit was good however. I thought maybe the large would be the way to go but it is far too bulky and the waist is still too tight. So I'll be returning the L too unfortunately and looking at another brand.
This jacket is almost perfect! I used it for about a month of heavy rains on the west coast and a couple nor'easters on the east coast (along with a puffy) and it worked fabulously for both conditions when I wasn't pushing myself on the bicycle. However, it still gets clammy when biking for more than about 2 miles and unzipping the front is not an option to improve breathability when the heavens open up. Its a great lightweight and semi-breathable jacket, but the I think the extra weight for a set of pit/hip zips is worth adding. Hopefully OR will come up with another version of this jacket with some ventilation zips!
I tend to sweat rather heavily when active and even the lightest of layers tends to compound this. Most "waterproof" layers are useless for me as I get them wet from the inside out, leaving the "waterproofing" useless. I was literally shocked the first time I used this jacket for an uphill skin and found that I never needed to take it off. The thing just plain breathes like no other waterproof garment I've ever experienced. That said, I still find myself asking, why not put pit zips on this jacket? We can't really be that worried about a couple grams of weight and pit zips would merely increase the versatility while also allowing for changes in fit based on under layers.
I got this jacket for general purpose mountaineering and backcountry skiing as a light hard shell. I have to admit, I opened the box and was....not convinced?...that would be the term. I mean, it feels super thin and lightweight, despite other good reviews, i was a bit cautious. But then I took it out. Utah this year is having a stupid winter. no snow, when it does storm it rains, I mean, stupid. But lucky for me, this jacket is built for stupid weather. I mean, rain, snow, wind have really abused this thing and I am pleased with its performance! Also, despite its paper thin feel and weight, it has survived tumbles, slides across trees, a rock climbing excursion, sailing on the Great Salt Lake (with stupid weather) and a vacation to seattle/portland and the surrounding area. It breaths well too, so when i got hot, i didn't get wet. also, it packs down to nothing which is awesome. I would advise this shell.
Light weight jacket that breathes well enough to handle intermittent spring rain while MTB/running. Also performed well while mountain biking in Eastern Oregon where the last hour on the trail was an all out down pour. Jacket material is comfortable next to skin even in humid conditions. The wrist cuffs seem to be a weak spot as the Velcro is starting to deteriorate after ~9 months. Luckily they have elastic in them so I rarely adjust the Velcro. I am 5'10", 150lbs, 29" waist and the small is a slim/alpine fit. This is my go to jacket for everything from travel, to playing fetch with my dog, to light and fast summits of Shasta. Keep in mind that this is a lightweight jacket with some amenities (adjustable wrists/hood, chest pocket) and though it may not have pot zips, all three pockets are mesh backed and can help loose some heat.
A nice, all around, year round jacket. I'm older so I like my jackets loose, but not sloppy. This jacket is borderline because I bought a size up to give me the space I like. Consequently the sleeves are too long, but also too narrow. Since it's just a shell, I like to wear a sweater or hoody under it in cooler weather. The sleeves are so narrow the fit is tight with this set up. I think the shell was really designed for the super young, super buff types that look like bean poles; not for middle aged bodies like mine. Still, the jacket works for now, and it's bright color ensures I'm visible on the streets on rainy nights; but I'm still on the lookout for the "perfect" jacket.
I have really enjoyed this jacket for many years as it has been with me through the worst of weather. It kept me dry through all of it. Since I do a fair amount of backpacking, I did notice overtime that the thin material that is used in the shoulders does wear out kind of fast with all of the contact that comes from backpacking. If you are looking for a backpacking rainjacket, this one is good and very light, but do keep in mind the tradeoff of the shoulder waterproofing wearing a bit faster. I still would recommend this jacket for anyone looking for a light, breathable and very packable rain jacket.
