I am a flat footed heavy heel striker that rolls my ankles inward and ends up with shin splints almost every weekend from hiking. I was looking for a shoe that could help all of the above but was light and didn’t make me look a clown with skinny ankles and giant shoes. These were it! I tried on plenty others but left these. First time out in these was over 5 miles with a 1300 foot climb and no shin splints or foot pain. Also, the toe box is roomy enough to spread my toes and walk correctly. Don’t let the lack of rock plate deter you. My hike was up a rocky desert mountain and no discomfort. I am loving these magic shoes!
I thought I'd found my holy grail shoe for hiking & backpacking because they were comfortable with great support, light and had outstanding grip on the soles. Everyone else in my party would be sliding on wet, smooth rock and I felt like a lizard scampering over obstacles. They also dried quickly and looked good. After a few weeks and around 100 miles, the shoes suddenly started giving me blisters on my heel, toes and ball of my foot. I tried different socks, foot glide and taping, to no avail. My perfect shoes had suddenly become unwearable. Reading online, I see that this is common as these shoes age and break down.
This shoe has a wonderful grip on all kinds of challenging terrains. Going up, down, through rain, snow, rocks and clay, the soles never let me down - for 500 km of intense hiking in central Italy. However, within the first 200 km already, the uppers each developed several holes above different toes, which just kept getting bigger. If the tread weren't so great, I'd dump them and never buy Saucony again, but the safety of this grip is the best, so now I'm a walking advertisement for how bad they look! My hiking partner has Saucony Peregrine ISO and his uppers didn't sustain any holes at all! I'd love to trade mine in for his! What to do?!
I saw these shoes on sale and had to grab them. I have read countless articles about the best trail running shoes for women and best shoes for backpacking and time after time the Saucony Peregrines 7 and 8 made the list. I have tested them out on hikes in packed snow and on dirt trails and they performed wonderfully on both! The tread is very aggressive and exactly what I wanted. I would not recommend these if you want to use them for every day use though. The tread is pretty thick so it feels like you're walking around on cleats if you walking on hard pavement/flooring. If you're looking for great trail runners and or backpacking shoes with great tread, get these!! You wont be sorry!
I have had these for about a year. I live in the desert and hike mostly in the desert. Sand always found it's way into the shoe through the top mesh. This past weekend I hiked in Coyote Gulch through deep soft sand in places and water in others. I thought they would be perfect because they dry quickly. They almost ruined my trip. They were like a sand magnet. I had to stop about once a mile to dig the sand out because it started compressing my feet. The wet sand was even more difficult and painful at times. Others in my group wore other shoes and did not have this problem at all. They are now in the dumpster.
I ran the Beast in the Brooks Cascadias last year and found that they stiffened up so much that this year they were giving me blisters - So off to REI where I found these babies. Comfortable and light and they feel great to run in. I’ve logged probably over 60 miles during training so far and not one hitch. Looking forward to running with these in the Beast.
I bought these shoes to run a Spartan race mountain series. I only wore them a couple times before to break them in a little bit. I would have to say these shoes were awesome during the race. It was super mudding and I did not slip or fall one bit going up and down the hills. My feet never hurt during the race. I would for sure reccomend these shoes.
I use these shoes for both trails and paved hikes. I have tried every brand available, so when the Rei Salesgirl suggested the Saucony I gave it a try. Iam very hard on my shoes and so far I love them-no blisters, foot pain ect..
I needed a good pair of shoes for hiking 10-15 miles at a time. I tried the some Altras but the toe box was just too wide for me and my heel seemed to hurt afterwards. So my friend had the Peregrine and swears by them, so I decided to try them out. Really like them. Feet don't hurt after a long day of hiking.
I have had MANY shoes in my lifetime.....but these are the very best! So comfortable, and it feels like I am walking on air! Will definitely check out this brand again.
