YESSSS - FINALLY

I took this on a hike this weekend, and FINALLY....I found a good coffee for my camping, backpacking, etc, etc. I'm a bit of a coffee snob (I grind my own beans at home), but it's a lot of work taking all the gear with me, and I always manage to spill the beans (whoops). This was great because it has everything you need to really get a good brew. Solid taste, easy to make, two thumbs up.

I prefer Alpine Start instant coffee

For backpacking coffee, it created too much waste. I liked it ok, but Alpine Start instant coffee was just as good and didn't have to take the waste out with me.

Novel idea, but not quite perfect

I love coffee almost as much as I love the outdoors, so having a good cup of coffee while out in the backcountry sounds like an incredible idea… and Kuju almost delivers a product and experience that I would throw in my pack with every outing. Unfortunately, I found the smallish, mostly flat individual serving packets slightly more bulky than I would have liked (due, no doubt, to the fact that each single-serving packet includes the cardboard “arms” that make this pour-over coffee dripper work.) Additionally, because the pour-over filter packets dip into the cup (instead of sitting on top of the cup, like a standard pour-over filter) the pour over process wasn’t great once the coffee level inside the cup was higher than the bottom of the Kuju pour-over filter. While the design of these single-serving pour-over filters wasn’t great, the Basecamp Blend coffee (medium roast ethically-sourced beans with light chocolate, honey, and oak notes) was a pretty decent cup of coffee. Others may have better luck than me with the brewing, but I’ll likely stick to my AeroPress or old school percolator coffee while out in the backcountry.

Great Taste But Difficult Filter

Bold Awakening really does have a dark cocoa and berry taste. There was no hint of bitterness in this delicious bold brew. I had multiple problems with the filters though, or Kuju Coffee would have earned a better rating. Glad I did a trial run at home. The first single-serve filter pack I tried split at the seam. I had to pour the grounds into a disposable filter I normally use when I camp and backpack. The next morning I did a 2nd trial run. This filter separated a bit at the seam. I was still able to use it, but it required additional time to pour the water over the grounds. This meant my coffee was not hot when I finished. My conclusion is this product is not dependable enough for camping and too expensive for home use. One serving weighs 0.6 oz in the packaging, so I would not want to backpack with it even if it was dependable. I think it would be even more difficult to tear the filter open along the perforation if it was raining or my hands were cold. Another issue was fit. The cup anchors are not wide enough for many camping cups. I recommend testing the filter width and length in your cup before a trip.

A Perfect Camp Coffee

The Kuju Single-Serve Pour Over Coffee is the perfect camp coffee. The pour over system is built into the bag in an easy-to-use origami process, which fully eliminates the most difficult parts of getting a quality brew on the go! It's simple to set up and use, but can potentially create a mess when finishing the brew so be careful! We got the basecamp blend, a perfect roast for those beautiful mornings outdoors! Paired with the cloud creamer and you've got the easiest and best morning beverage you could hope for, especially while out and about!

3/25 Am huge coffee fan.. long distance hiker; female. Tried this. Disappointed. There are more bad than good and buying this again not gonna happen: Bad: lotsa work Requires a good water boil and superhuman patience Fragile design Waste full design Requires lotsa dexterity and perfect environmental conditions —-if you have cold fingers forget it! Expensive Common flavor- nothing worthwhile If creamer or sugar user, requires YOU haul! Messy Good: They tried Recommend an instant coffee sleeve or “tea bag” style coffee available at Walmart

Perfect.

I love my coffee. It is to me the perfect taste, especially when I am camping and/or traveling. And I am very particular on the taste of coffee. When I was a backpacking guide in the 90s, I would wake up early to make and enjoy that first cup in peace. This meant boiling water and pouring water over a filter that often fell in. So. I wish that I had invented this product! And I must say it is perfect. The ease of use. The minimal packaging. The taste. It is all just…well….perfect. I first practiced using the packet at home. Then I sent one with my son on a campout. I used one on a road trip when there was only weak coffee at the gas stations. These things will be put in my car and I will got now always travel with them.

A treat on the trail

I was quite surprised at how good this coffee tasted, as I'm more used to the instant coffee packets while backpacking. You do need to use a tall cup, otherwise the filter rests in the coffee. I used a metal cup with folded handles, these helped keep the filter from falling down into the coffee as it got heavy with water. A tall narrow coffee cup would work much better. It took quite a while to poor all the hot water through the filter, but that is ok, I always have time to enjoy the outdoors. I added the coconut dairy free creamer, a good combination. So good!

Tried out the Bold Awakening and boy is it bold. The taste is phenomenal! It's interesting to see how it holds against the rim of my coffee mug, but it does the trick. I wish the opening was a bit bigger. Since it's smaller, you have to pour very slowly so it doesn't overflow too much. There are other coffee brands out there that has a coffee bag designed to look like a tea bag. But this version is great since I do love my pour over coffee.

Convenient but Bland

First off I love the ease and set up. You open the package, attach the pod to your cup, tear the top of the pod of and pour boiling water in it. It's that simple. What a genius idea. To be fair, I normally drink hot brewed coffee, but this coffee was pretty weak, it tasted watered down with 8 oz of water. The flavor was supposed to be cocoa & berry, and I tasted hints of that, but it was pretty bitter. After I added cream and sugar it tasted pretty generic. It's probably really good for those that have coffee routinely, probably not for an aficionado. I would love to see the company make this with biodegradable materials.

Everyone has different approaches to how they make their own back country coffee. For me Kuju is the perfect combination of easy and good. I've used them on a couple backpacking trips and they've worked amazingly. Definitely one of my favorite forms of backcountry coffee. If you like good coffee you should buy sone kuju

Not Perfect

This product is amazing. The flavor of the Awakening and Basecamp blend are fantastic! It is as good as coffee you would get in the best coffee shop. My only 2 negatives is the price and the form factor. The price I can live with, good things cost money it just seems a little pricey for an 8oz. cup of coffee albeit a very good cup. The form factor can be a tricky. If you go to there website and watch there video you will see how they do it. I use a collapsible silicone cup which was to wide and the sides to soft to keep the arms of the brewing frame open. I got it to work and it made literally a perfect tasting cup of coffee. 1. I would definitely recommend. 2. just keep in mind the cup you use. Enjoy, Todd
