Very disappointed with the purchase; not waterproof and water seeps through the zipper lining. Just tried this out in the very rainy, windy weather here in the DC area. About half way through my run I noticed that my chest and belly area were damp. At first I figured maybe I was just imagining things until the wind kicked up...then I really knew that area was indeed wet and that the hoodie was not keeping out water. Suffice it to say I was a tad bit on the cold side by the time I got back from my run.
Keeps you dry and breathable enough to run in when necessary! If the conditions call for something more substantial than a Patagonia Hoodini, this is your best bet. It will keep you dry on the trail and, while there is no perfect blend of waterproof/breathability for running in bad conditions, this is the best mix out on the market.
After running in this during a recent 4 mile urban run in the snow, sleet, and rain, I can't say enough about the Arc'teryx Norvan Hoodie, particularly considering how ultralight this thing is. It kept me dry from the snow, sleet, and rain and performed exceptionally well. The breathability was nothing short of outstanding. I tend to run warm, so I paired the Norvan SL with a Burton lightweight base layer. The temp was 32 with variable 10-15 mph gusts, causing driving moisture at times. I did not overheat or get too chilly. Based on some other reviews I've read, the design improvement of the zipper section, over prior years’ zipper construction, seems to be a value-add since nothing seeped through during my run (an internal backside flap behind the zipper was added to this version). I’m 5’9” and 174 with a normal build and the fit in size medium was perfect - not too snug or too loose. Awesome water proof Arc’teryx product, especially for super wet and cooler conditions. I’m truly a fan of the shake-dry technology!
I bought this as a do all kind of raincoat. What sold me on it is its superb ability at breathing as I live in the southeastern USA and I needed a year around raincoat. Sure I could have one for winter one for summer but the winters are wet and mild so even many summer weight shells seem stifling. I also go cycling a lot and this jacket works well for that too I think $300 is a bit steep but I got mine on clearance at around $200. The cut is good and close enough it holds the worst rain at bay and it is very breathable though still pretty hot in the summer while cycling. I love it, though I think there is plenty of room for improvement, and still after having it for over a year think I made the best choice for a do all cool running rain jacket. The one serious down side, especially if your riding mtb trails or thinking of hiking with a pack, is the material is inherently fragile and can tear or wear through easily. Another plus is that it is rain proof and windproof without having to reapply a DWR. Yes, there are cycling specific jackets made from shakedry fabric but as I said I wanted a do it all raincoat and this one fit the bill.
