Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Backpacking bags are typically rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol—currently International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537, though some older items followed European Norm (EN) 13537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. Some brands determine their own temperature rating by aligning to the Comfort rating for women’s bags, to the Lower Limit rating for men’s bags, or somewhere in the middle for nongendered bags.

Great Bag

I bought this bag a few months ago, and have taken it on a multi-day hunting trip. I had used a fuzzy, cheap sleeping bag for years, and didn’t know what I was missing. The bag compresses down to smaller than a football, weighs next to nothing, fluffs up quickly, and is insanely warm. On our trip, the highest temperature during the day was 36 degrees. There was rain and snow. The bag was really warm, and I only wore a long sleeved shirt to bed once. The rest of the nights, I just wore regular underwear and even unzipped the bag a little to cool down. I usually get cold when I sleep, but not in this bag. I am a side sleeper, and I can rotate to my side without moving the bag around. I am a 5’11” 200lb male, and I got the regular size. Plenty of room, warm, and the Hood works great. It even has an inside pocket to tuck a wallet or cellphone. I highly recommend. The only drawback was that the zipper needs to be used slowly or it sometimes catches on the fabric.

Great buy for first down sleeping bag

I needed a new sleeping bag for first overnight backpacking trip this year. This sleeping back packed down to smaller than an NFL size football. 2 other buddies got a synthetic bags on Amazon so we all could give reviews in the morning. Temps dropped to about mid-30's and we were all pretty comfy in our bags. Difference was mine was smaller, lighter, and I only wore long underwear while they wore numerous layers of regular clothes. Looking forward to next starting PCT hike this month with this bag as my go to for now.

Great features but not warm enough at 35 degrees

I love this sleeping bag. It's durable, light and packs really small. I have used it backpacking and camping many times. It holds up well in every situation. The only downside I have found is that it is too cold if the temperature gets below about 43 degrees. I would be really cold in a 35 degree night since I start to cold in this bag whenever the temperature drops below 48 degrees. I'm wondering if there is a specific issue with mine since the other reviews seem to say the opposite. I'm not a cold bodied person and I don't have any issue with body heat.

Took it on a 2 night bike packing trip. It got down to low 30s. I slept in a long sleeve cotton shirt and old school long johns and I was very warm. Great bag for the price

It's a good quality sleeping bag.

We purchased two of these The North Face Furnace 35/2 sleeping bags for Cub Scout campouts year round in South Carolina. We've only been on one campout so far this year (the Mom & Me Campout in September) and I heard nothing but positive feedback from my wife about the sleeping bags' comfort and warmth during the night. My wife did take a small pillow for them to put under the hood of the sleeping bag, in addition to a nice pad to put under the sleeping bags.

Great bag

My first compression bag. My buddies all got 30's, but I'm a bit warm blooded, so opted for the 35. My first night in the bag dropped to mid-twenties. I was definitely cold when I first woke (my buddy with the Marmot 30 was crankier than I when he woke). The next day, wore a few more clothes and was plenty comfy at again mid-twenties. I just bought a thermo liner and am taking this up Ranier with me! Would definitely recommend.

Does the job and does it well

Very comfortable and warm without overheating. Works well for 3 seasons, however I haven't tried it in temperatures below 30. Packs small enough.

I bought this for my Husband and He loves it. Just used it for car camping and it kept him warm in a cold damp campground.
